they were just taking down the dreamatorium, I don't think anyone was moving anywhere.

No, there were boxes being carried in there. It just looked like Troy might be getting his own room.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 18 May 2012 08:05 (eleven years ago) link

Troy is becoming more responsible, and blanket forts only hold their novelty for so long.

The finale was great -- I think I would have been fine with it being the last ever episode of Community, it would be a good note to go out on.

I realized this show is a lot like Venture Bros in the sense that both started out accessible enough but at this point only make their loyal fans even more loyal and nobody else can really knows what's going on.

Video game ep was A+. (Hopefully, the other two will be up soon.)

OMG that videogame episode. Knocked the Claymation ep into a cocked hat.

Goth Britta was hot.

Overall I'd say the finale was a bit weaker than the previous two (I'm assuming the videogame ep was bumped back in the season) but still great. Evil Chang plotline a lot more satisfying than air conditioning repair plotline, if only because I was holding out for more John Goodman.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 18 May 2012 21:25 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I was really dreading the Evil Chang plotline becaue I'd really grown tired of him over the season, but I thought the payoff was actually pretty good.

Jim Rash needs an Emmy to match his Oscar.

evil chang has been great because chang is evil. s2/early s3 chang wasn't evil, just pathetic, thus why he didn't work.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 18 May 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

It might have been my SSRI withdrawal, but I began to well up a few times in that last hour.

God, that's so pathetic. I certainly didn't nearly cry at all. It's these onions.

Well, it took place at some point after they'd become the Greendale Seven, so I bet it was in sequence.

i got a bit eye-rolly when they did two genre eps in a row, on the same night, not that they could've planned it but come on now, what would whiney think

they were both good eps tho

and i'm glad they actually ended on a conclusion episode instead of a big concept $$ episode. hate when tv shows always end a season without actually ending the season.

also britta and troy are super cute together have to admit

Heist was a genre episode (and a great one -- loved the failed plan that succeeded lampshade). The videogame ep was a gimmick one, but not a genre one, I thought.

assuming that the closing montage was a wire homage

Clay, Saturday, 19 May 2012 01:43 (eleven years ago) link

because the wire invented closing montages!?

s.clover, Saturday, 19 May 2012 01:47 (eleven years ago) link

They may not have invented them, but slow-motion season-ending montages set to a song is identifiably a Wire dealie.

Harmon will be a consulting producer. Two guys responsible for Just Shoot Me are joining the show and taking over. RIP.

apparently they were writers on Happy Endings so that's vaguely comforting.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:13 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, that's really the only promising sign. It's likely going to be a very different show, even if not obviously so on the surface.

Clay, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:26 (eleven years ago) link

I think this might be a good thing. The cast is good. The writers are good. Dan Harmon was constantly on the verge of losing control of the plot and/or his own mind. If this had happened between the first and second seasons, it might spell disaster. The Greendale universe is pretty well defined at this point, though, and these guys aren't going to want to fuck that up.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:39 (eleven years ago) link

If I was in NBC's position I'd probably have sacked him too tbh

Simon H., Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:40 (eleven years ago) link

Is it weird that I love Community but pretty much find Dan Harmon to be a horrible person?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:41 (eleven years ago) link

Sony sacked him, not NBC.

I'm interested to see where the writers go, but Community never really had that calm, consistent quality of a Parks & Rec. It's greatest moments have been its intelligently outlandish aspects, and Harmon knows a lot about TV and sitcoms and arcs and dramatic blah-diddy-blah. I hope I'm wrong though, but I don't think they can somehow pull an emotional moment like Troy "sacrificing himself" to the Air Conditioner Repair unit without him.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:45 (eleven years ago) link

If Chris McKenna and Megan Ganz stay on board, I won't be worried about the show's heart. Even so, I have to imagine that a zillion talented writers are jumping at the chance to work on Community now that Harmon has departed.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:49 (eleven years ago) link

The decisions about the show's fate seem to be at cross-purposes. I get sacking Harmon, I get ordering a low-faith 13-episode season, but I don't get doing both. It seems like they might as well have just cut their losses and cancelled the thing. Although I guess it might not be too late to do just that?

Also, I think Sony's "showrunners, shmoe-runners" comment betrays a real lack of understanding wrt how many of the fans probably see Harmon and the show as inseparable.

idk how to feel about this. dan harmon is so transparent with everything that i've found him very interesting to watch/follow, but i agree that it's seemed like he was about to go off the rails at any moment. i also have had some low-level dissatisfaction with the show for a while now -- the emotional arcs have started to feel stagnant and repetitive, and some of the concept episodes have played up the concept at the expense of the comedy. i know everyone stans for S2 of the show, but i really loved S1, even the rougher early episodes. that whole "sitting around the study table, telling jokes" stuff was my favorite and the more they moved away from that, the less connected i felt to the show. the idea that new showrunners = renewed focus on simplicity and jokes is kind of appealing to me, but then again what if the jokes get hacky and bad? idk.

the minister of RAILWAYS (reddening), Saturday, 19 May 2012 04:16 (eleven years ago) link

that said i really enjoyed all three of last night's episodes, and i think troy has had a great arc this year. i am more tired of jeff's tired platitude-speeches (including the "annie here's why we can't be together" ones that he gave like five times this season) and the "abed is broken" episodes.

the minister of RAILWAYS (reddening), Saturday, 19 May 2012 04:19 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, Abed's character was really mistreated this year and was one of my least favorite aspects of S3. Hope they pull back from exploiting his condition (whatever it may be) in the future.
