btw i love the deadpan tone of wikipedia entries about these songs

The lyrics made some references to popular culture, by mention: Phil Rizzuto, Rapunzel, Dolemite, Geraldo Rivera, skinheads, the song "Beat on the Brat" by the Ramones, and Doris the Finkasaurus.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

It was the moment I realized they were great, not just punks with a lucky ticket.

I imagine this line being delivered by Jerry Orbach in a Beastie Boys biopic. "Word on the street was that these punks wuz washed up. Sure they got lucky once but this time they rolled the dice and it came up snake eyes. Heard they'd fallen in with a coupla west coast mugs name a the Dust Brothers. But then Fat Vinny played me Shake Your Rump…"

Yeah, I was surprised at What Comes Around's showing.

I'm surprised that "Time to Get Ill" didn't place anywhere. The only one from LTI not to show up in the top 60.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 17 May 2012 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

As short as it gets:

1. "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" (40)
2. "Rock Hard" (36)
3. "She's on It" (33)
4. "Rhymin and Stealin" (30)
5. "So What'cha Want" (28)

The truth is, Paul's Boutique was a letdown for me at the time, and from that point forward I only heard the singles, and not even all of those. But Licensed to Ill had a huge effect on me when it came out, and the first four songs above can still take me back to that moment.

Pleased to see Futterman's Rule just bubbling under in the countdown

Shake Your Rump was my own #1, and has been since pretty much the first time I heard it. I may not have fully understood Paul's Boutique when I was 15, but I understood that Shake Your Rump was otherworldly great.

I didn't vote. But if there is a more otherworldly moment than "OO-OO!/Is the disco call!" in their catalog then I haven't heard it. And there are about a dozen moments in the song that come awfully goddamn close. I seriously get chills every single time I hear it.

I submitted 5 videos but I guess I'm not super bummed if no one else did.

billstevejim, Friday, 18 May 2012 04:29 (twelve years ago) link

In re Shake Your Rump (which was also my #1), lots of talk itt about great lead-off songs, but SYR is a perfect #2 song, a sucker punch after the drifting intro. You get that quick rattling snare fill, and then NOW I ROCK A HOUSE PARTY AT THE DROP OF A HAT...

seven years pass...

Just noticed the other day that “Car Thief” samples “I’ll Bet You.” Think it’s the Jackson Five version but not 100% sure.

Yeah its not the Funkadelic version

And it’s certainly not the Theresa Lindsey version.
