xp I've been doing the same contenderizer. It makes me sad that I let them drift into the background after Ill Communication. I loved them at Glastonbury in 94 but barely remember the other times I saw them (Wembley 98 and Coachella 2003) - I felt like they'd run out of ideas and their MCing had gotten monotonous. Sometimes it's not the concerts I missed that I regret but the ones I saw but took for granted because I was in the wrong mood or talking through the whole thing.

Cool, at least the first four albums each place a track in the top 5.

So top 2 will be the same as the top 2 on my ballot. But in WHICH ORDER?

love the Mountain sample

Yes! One of the best samples ever. I thought Looking Down The Barrel... wouldn't make it, so glad to see it so high. It was my 2

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

Solid #1. Thanks for running this JF.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 17 May 2012 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

haha I was going to ask if shake your rump had placed yet

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 May 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

wow

I am all kinds of surprised by these results. I mean, I love Shake Yr Rump but I would never have called it as #1. So What'cha Want rules forever, I'd take it anywhere in the top 10 but I'm glad it made #2

I'M THE ILLEST MUTHAFUCKA FROM HERE TO GARDENA

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 May 2012 18:00 (eleven years ago) link

shake your rump really is pretty great tho, my #2

Shake Your Rump was my own #1, and has been since pretty much the first time I heard it. I may not have fully understood Paul's Boutique when I was 15, but I understood that Shake Your Rump was otherworldly great.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

Shake Yr Rump, Hey Ladies, and Shadrach all kinda rotated in and out as my favorite PB track over the years... but lol in the end B-Boy Bouillabaise was my no. 1

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 May 2012 18:12 (eleven years ago) link

I def had Shake Yr Rump in my 20, I think...it's a good'un

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 May 2012 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

i like the year & a day/hello brooklyn part of BBB, but it's not one of my favorites, overall

At first, "So Whatcha Want" was going to be an easy pick for #1, but as I listened to Paul's Boutique for the first time in maybe 10 years, a flood of memories came back.

I remember seeing the "She's on It" video about 95 or 96, and being confused if it was the same Beastie Boys I knew from ads in fanzines hawking the Polywog Stew EP. As Licensed to Ill hit, and I realized they were the same, I had this weird pride that some hardcore kids had made it big. As it blew up into a phenomenon, I had to wonder if it had gone to their head.

I was as skeptical as anyone that they could follow their own act. Read an interview, before Paul's Boutique was released, where they were bragging about the number of samples on their upcoming record. But it already seemed too late to try to catch up with the variety and subtlety of 3 Feet High and Rising. There was the video for "Hey Ladies", and I thought, "well, the 70s schtick is cool. But I'm getting the feeling they are just a novelty act." Soon afterward, a friend showed me the Paul's Boutique cassette, and slipped it in his boombox, and just let me listen. And when the first scratch guitar sample hit, my jaw dropped. These guys in it for the long term. It was the moment I realized the were great, not just punks with a lucky ticket.

Before this past week, I had a rank for the first five albums, with Check Your Head on top. But I think I like 'em all about the same at this point. I love how they learned on the job, and gradually expanded their sound but never discarded any of it.

btw i love the deadpan tone of wikipedia entries about these songs

The lyrics made some references to popular culture, by mention: Phil Rizzuto, Rapunzel, Dolemite, Geraldo Rivera, skinheads, the song "Beat on the Brat" by the Ramones, and Doris the Finkasaurus.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 19:16 (eleven years ago) link

It was the moment I realized they were great, not just punks with a lucky ticket.

I imagine this line being delivered by Jerry Orbach in a Beastie Boys biopic. "Word on the street was that these punks wuz washed up. Sure they got lucky once but this time they rolled the dice and it came up snake eyes. Heard they'd fallen in with a coupla west coast mugs name a the Dust Brothers. But then Fat Vinny played me Shake Your Rump…"
