Girls! Girls! (how did this drift 1/2 way down sna? isn't this what you all have been waiting for all this time?)

how's life, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

It was Sick Mouthy's reference to Hello Ladies in 'Imperfect Sound Forever' that turned me onto this one, and back onto PB and the Beastie Boys in general. Thanks Nick!

some dude, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

I had never even heard of this song until the last few weeks. Still haven't heard it.

how's life, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

I Ch-Check It Out, and included it, but that's crazy high.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

like

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

Outstanding. You may scoff, but was my #7. It hits hard.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

THAT IS NOT #6

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

IT BETTER BE HIGHER

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

lol

some dude, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

But yes, I did mention the soundstage-shift in the opening of Hey Ladies in ISF; it's awesome! People should do it more often!

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Ladies got no #1s?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:57 (eleven years ago) link

some dude is a gangster, a prankster, the king of the ave.

WTF?

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Ladies got no #1s?

Nope. Highest placing track in the poll without a #1 vote.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

And now the really real #6

6. "LOOKING DOWN THE BARREL OF A GUN" (1989) [624 points, 24 votes, 1 first place vote]

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

ah you joker... this isn't a big highlight for me tbf though.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:10 (eleven years ago) link

Oh no, man...this song still has the power to murder me if I'm in the right state of mind.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

I hadn't really ever appreciated it 'til it was mentioned as the should've-been-lead-single. It blows me away now, it's so heavy.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

* mentioned on the voting thread

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:20 (eleven years ago) link

This really should have made my ballot. I think of it as a companion piece to 'Rhymin' and Stealin''

Racism is schism on the serious tip. Indeed.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

Ha. Can't find my ballot but I suspect this was my #1. Awesome.

pandemic, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

You guys listen to a very different version of the Beasties from me. I was sure The Move would be top ten.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

can't argue with this, it's one of the greatest of all openers

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:25 (eleven years ago) link

when my girly shakes her hips she sure gets FUNKY!!

pandemic, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:26 (eleven years ago) link

By the way, I still haven't tabulated the video votes. When I find the time (this weekend?) I'll share those too.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link

Looking Down the Barrel of A Gun is STILL so full of so much power, the cadence and that big-ass riff...

IMMA DIE HARDER LIKE MY MAN BRUCE WILLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Ladies is pretty-much all time - especially the video. The Paul's Boutique commentary has them telling the awesome story about how they came into those incredible outfits they wear in the video, it's hilarious

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

I'm just gonna quote myself here:

ali baba and the 40 thieves, ali baba and the 40 thieves, ali baba and the 40 thieves, ALI BABA AND THE 40 THIEVES, ALI BABA AND THE 40 THIEVES, ALI BABA AND THE 40 THIEVES

love the Mountain sample

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

"Looking Down the Barrel" was the one I most regretted not voting for, so I'm glad everbody else did.

the brash truncation of that mountain sample speaks volumes

also can I just

she's got a gold tooth
you know she's hardcore
she'll show you a good time
then she'll show you the door

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

I was listening to Barrel this morning and the lyric "24 is my age" made me think that this was pretty much the most fun thing you could be doing at 24. And then I got to thinking about being dead at 47 and I got bummed out again but still, what a record. One of my all-time favourite breakbeats.

6. "CH-CHECK IT OUT" (2004) [695 points, 26 votes, 4 first place votes]

Best poll deke yet.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:13 (eleven years ago) link

spent the walking around part of yesterday with the beastie boys on shuffle. just the first five albums plus all the non-album tracks i could easily get my hands on, some 150+ songs. only track i was tempted to skip was "girls", and after a minute, i was into that and happy to listen through (was disappointed when it didn't kick into "fight" afterwards, though). wasn't all great, but i enjoyed every minute. i think i just like the beastie boys.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:39 (eleven years ago) link

this is a weird top 10. no idea what number 1 will be. I assume Shake Your Rump and Jimmy James are up next somewhere...

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

"4 first place votes" was the part where i thought i'd tipped my hands as to wha-wu-wu-wu-what's it all about

some dude, Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

"Jimmy James" was #25

man you're in some fantasy land

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:52 (eleven years ago) link

xp I've been doing the same contenderizer. It makes me sad that I let them drift into the background after Ill Communication. I loved them at Glastonbury in 94 but barely remember the other times I saw them (Wembley 98 and Coachella 2003) - I felt like they'd run out of ideas and their MCing had gotten monotonous. Sometimes it's not the concerts I missed that I regret but the ones I saw but took for granted because I was in the wrong mood or talking through the whole thing.
