Yeah I always feel like a tool when I try and dance to rock, also the lyrics just get in the way.

Scram is a good choice!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

i like dancing to rock as much as dance these days...perhaps rock/indie/punk are more forgiving - you can just throw yourself about and you dont have to conform to the rhythm as much, tho thats obviously also fun

fillers: 'Danger High Voltage', Le Tigre 'Hot Topic', B52s 'Love Shack', House Of Pain 'Jump Around', Blackstreet 'No Diggity', Grandmaster Flash 'The Message', Freelance Hellraiser 'A Stroke Of genieus', Missy Elliott 'Get Ur Freak On', the whole of '2 Many DJs'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 26 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

funny u mention 'emotional rescue' mr diamond -
they played it at aficionado in manchester 3 weeks ago
and i thought 'now why don't u hear this anymore ?'

unless that WAS you.

piscesboy, Sunday, 26 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

play 'slave to the rhythm (blooded)'. if nobody dances then you're in the wrong club.

michael wells (michael w.), Sunday, 26 January 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

'pull up the bumper' takes precedence surely?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 26 January 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

no way.

michael wells (michael w.), Sunday, 26 January 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

The whole problem with the filler/killer thing is that it's all about the audience, not the song. The Grease megamix will go down very well with your average wedding disco, while a skinny deadserious techno DJ in an abandoned warehouse will clear the floor with it.

Anyway, the obligatory floorfiller: Tomcraft "Loneliness"

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

FILLER: "My Name is Prince"
KILLER: Surprisingly, "Fool's Gold" by the Stone Roses cleared the floor at the last soirez of this kind I was at (back in the bronze age).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

In college, if I really wanted to stop DJing and clear out the floor so I could take a break to dance, I'd put on either "Fool's Gold" or "Slip Inside This House". Worked like a dream every time.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

would that be Parallelo College in Alternityville? i hear they dont like Leftfield there either ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

FILLER: "Tainted Love." Either the Soft Cell or original Gloria Jones version. The original will score you cred points as excited clubgoers rush the DJ stand to ask who's singing that Soft Cell song.

KILLER: Silver Jews' "Old New York."

Luckily I've mostly DJ'd on the radio and in between bands - I can't handle the stress of picking dancefloor fillers all night!

mike a (mike a), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

other killers: the Meters, ESG, Altered Images

mike a (mike a), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

oops, I mean fillers - but they're killer.

mike a (mike a), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

FILLER: "Le Freak" by Chic
KILLER: "Triumph of Death" by Hellhammer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

would that be Parallelo College in Alternityville? i hear they dont like Leftfield there either ;)

Very few people at Harvard knew who The Prodigy were back in the early 90s, let alone Leftfield. People were still stuck on Erasure and Duran Duran (specifically "Stop!" and "Rio", two songs I have come to loathe like you wouldn't believe due to forced exposure).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

songs i would imagine are filler but have never heard on a dance floor: zapp "come on"

gaz (gaz), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

2. DANCEFLOOR KILLERS: What did you think would have this effect but actually left you behind the decks red-faced, the mirror ball's refractions cruelly mocking the now empty dancefloor? (Or what has a dj played as if in a spiteful calculated move to paralyze you whilst getting your freak on)?

This was actually Aphex Twin's inspiration for "Digeridoo"

Curtis Stephens, Monday, 27 January 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sounds more like the inspiration for "Ventolin"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

afghan acid

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 10:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

three months pass...
bump up. i love this thread.

new examples of fillers ?

some of those coldplay bootlegs, junior jack 'e samba',
and, odd but true, at manchester's fashionable 'chips...'
last month ; 'a little respect' by erasure.

anyone else ?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 16:20 (twenty years ago) link

yeah quite into E Samba too, even if it is dead like Thrill Me.

Linus Loves new single "The Terrace" is the biggest filler I've heard lately, fucking mental 80s french loop, followed by a long piano breakdown and then the loop just comes in again. I'd imagine it'll be fucking huge.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

I have to ask: Anthony, have you played "Gay Bar" at the gay bar yet? and if so, has it gotten any response?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

"Let's Spend the Night Together" by the Rolling Stones

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 18:03 (twenty years ago) link

All-Time Fillers -- "It Takes Two," "Oh Shelia," "Kiss"

Killers -- for some reason, Bowie's "Fashion" stands out as a request that not only cleared the floor, but caused the customers to carry a "no dance" grudge for the next few songs...which made me play more shit I wanted to hear, which killed any fun I was having that night.

Surprises -- for some reason, both "Shiny Happy People" and the 12" remix of "Sussudio" did much better than I thought they ever would. Could just be a middle of Michigan thing, however.

Erick H (Erick H), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

FILLERS: Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be Real," Puffy's "All About The Benjamins," Parliament's "Flashlight," Underworld's"Two Months Off," Grace Jones' "Pull Up To The Bumper."

KILLER: Rip. Rig & Panic.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

For a second there I thought you had switched the categories and I was going to despair.

Hahaha, it was already topping every european dancechart back then, so that wasn't too difficult. From a UK perspective I also predicted Junior Senior pretty early, but that was also dead easy since it was already getting lots of airplay here.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

24 hour party people will rock a party. That track came on at the last house party I went to and the place just started going nuts.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:55 (twenty years ago) link

i always dance to nabekazu takemura and pulseprogramming but fuck if a floorkilling last week.

suprise fillers: i had a nice books/r.ashley mix going that went over pretty well. casiotone for the painfully alone "baby it's you" (DFA Colette mix) with some bird sounds run through G4 and delayed/live roto-tracked during the intro pling plong part brought the house down.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:12 (twenty years ago) link

funny, i'd say aphex twin - windowlicker = filler. killer - paula abdul tunes.
-- ambrose (ambrosewhit...), January 19th, 2002.

Ambrose, you can't be talking about 'Opposites Attract', surely?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:25 (twenty years ago) link

filler: "Together" DJ Falcon / Bangalter, "You're So Just Just" Rework, I-F "Space Invaders" [still]
killer: Mid-level wack-ass neu-electro.

At least at the Mac store anyway :)

david day (winslow), Thursday, 8 May 2003 01:15 (twenty years ago) link

other filler: M. Jackson's "Don't Stop" reigns over all, though Spinners' "I'll Be Around" is a close second.

david day (winslow), Thursday, 8 May 2003 01:17 (twenty years ago) link

Also depressingly for the crowds I used to ahem dj to all too often anything from the pulp fiction or boogie nights soundtrack of the immaculate collection = filler.

anything else = killer.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 8 May 2003 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

Filler: "Lose Yourself" may get you killed when the college kids all jump out of their chairs at once and the decks fall on you. I still hate it though.
Killer: strangely enough, Ludacris' "Move Bitch" is a near-killer unless you follow it up with something unstoppable, eg. LL Cool J - "Phenomenon".

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 8 May 2003 04:38 (twenty years ago) link

i think i was talking about 'knocked out', which i was playing on numerous occasions and totally killed where ever it was. i guess 'opposites attract' would do a bit better..

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 8 May 2003 08:04 (twenty years ago) link

sadly, where i live (eastern pennsylvania), it's usually:

filler = nothing.
killer = everything.

tony bleach (blackshoeswhitesocks), Thursday, 8 May 2003 12:20 (twenty years ago) link

Recent experiences of relatively unlikely fillers/killers:

Filler:
T Connection - "At midnight" (particularly good in a house set)
EPMD - "You gots to chill"
DMX Krew - "17 ways to break my heart"
Thirstin Howl III - "Live with my moms"

Killer:
Musique - "In the bush" (I don't know what the hell was wrong with those people)
Hixxy and Sharkey - "Toytown"
The Slits - "Heard it through the grapevine"

(the above being three good reasons why DJing in london sucks azzz)

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 8 May 2003 12:33 (twenty years ago) link

god damn i wish i had been there for the dmx krew....what album is that on anyways?

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 8 May 2003 12:34 (twenty years ago) link

It's on an EP from (I think) '98. Stripy Rephlex logo. 5 tracks, the only other decent one being "Sound of the street".

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 8 May 2003 12:48 (twenty years ago) link

filler - "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" by Hall and Oates, "Smooth Operator" by Big Daddy Kane

killer - "Closer" by NIN (suddenly it's very clear to me that this song is OVER)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 8 May 2003 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

Musique - "In the bush" (I don't know what the hell was wrong with those people)

It's very NOW for Yanks and Brits to rag on each other, but this almost made me cry. It's time for some Hands Across The Ocean shit. We need to help these people.

f - "Give Me Love" by Cerrone
k - "Comanchero" by Moon Ray !!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 14:36 (twenty years ago) link

f:
"candy girl" by new edition
"hella good" by no doubt
"cars that go boom" by l'trimm
"deceptacon (DFA mix)" by le tigre

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

yep yep yep that 'deceptacon' mix by dfa's ace.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:21 (twenty years ago) link

'mistakes' by herbert filled the floor at the social in nottingham when my friend played it., one of the more sublime moments that i've had on a dancefloor...

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:23 (twenty years ago) link

i've only ever DJed once and the filler was 'work it' by missy. surprisingly, the killer was 'B R Right' by trina ft ludacris!

sean g, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:36 (twenty years ago) link

'Dirrty' and 'Slave 4 U' seem to send people into absolute dancing fits, as do anything by MJ and Justin, but we knew that already. Also, Mr Scruff's 'Get A Move On' (a Manc anthem/cliche) and 'Chicken In A Box' (a much better track for my money), Beats International's 'Dub Be Good To Me' and just about any Neptunes, Chemicals or Daft Punk track. Most recently, people went wild for Len-'Feelin' Alright' (Dust Brothers remix) and 'I Feel Love' when I last played out and a mate got good results with LCD Soundsytem's 'Give It Up'.

Cornelius' 'Ball-In Kick Off' nearly killed it for me once even though it was mixed into 'Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out' and his remix of Coldcut perplexes everyone but me. Otherwise, I have no other personal killer tales.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:57 (twenty years ago) link

'Shine' by Lil Wayne is also guaranteed floor filler especially if you have loads of ice and when you throw out your arm the bitches think it's snowing!!

sean g, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

'Call Me Al' used to get people dancing a couple of years ago, not sure about now though for some reason. Old nineties pop/rap/r'n'b - 'Return Of The Mac', 'Creep', 'NEver Gonna Get It', 'California Love', 'Keep Their Heads Ringing' etc always gets people my age on the dancefloor.

Into The Groove and Buffalo Stance both guaranteed.

"Blow the Whistle" and "My Neck, My Back"

two years pass...

New fillers and killers tested with a latin crowd:

F:

PATO BANTON - GO PATO
A BAND OF BITCHES - NORESTE CALIENTE
DEPECHE MODE - JUST CANT GET ENOUGH
GALANTIS - PEANUT BUTTER JELLY
JACKSONS - BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE
SALT N PEPPA - SHOOP
MAJOR LAZER - LIGHT IT UP

IN 2016 THESE WILL DEFINITELY MAKE DRUNK LATIN GIRLS EXCITED, WHO KNOWS NEXT YEAR:

JOEY MONTANA - PICKY
MALUMA - BORRO CASSETTE
PITBULL - COMO YO LE DOY
JUSTIN BIEBER - SORRY
ENRIQUE IGLESIAS, NICKY JAM - EL PERDON

KILLERS (Oddly enough):

RIHANNA - WORK
DRAKE - ONE DANCE

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 26 May 2016 00:13 (seven years ago) link

If you live in Latin America there seems like there has been one or two Pitbull fillers every year for the past 10 years or so. Dude is a fucking party franchise in here it's getting ridonculous. This summer it's 'Como yo le doy' and 'Fun'. Last summer we had 'El Taxi' which was an annoying remake of 'Murder She Wrote', before that it was 'Timber' 'Dont stop the party' 'sube las manos pa arriba'...

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 26 May 2016 00:25 (seven years ago) link

I'll bet Pitbull's NBA Playoffs theme from 2014 would be a killer though

'Work' is such a tricky one. I've seen it fill and kill. has to be dropped at exactly the right time

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 26 May 2016 06:13 (seven years ago) link

One Dance and Work I've mostly hear them played for warming up. They're floor killers if played even in remix form when people are already in the floor... They could work on a more sexy, mellow kind of dancefloor but good luck finding one.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 26 May 2016 17:27 (seven years ago) link

The best songs have enormous variations in tempo, beat and dynamics. Which makes, for instance, "Supper's Ready" useless for dancing.

seven years pass...

So I usually host parties at my house and since many people from different backgrounds and age gaps turn up every now and then I try to keep it mixed and take request to place in line. I guess my selections make 70% of the playlist and the others have been added as requested. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but here's a collection of highlights of the last 5+ reunions.

These are not all necessarily dancefloor fillers - I wasn't sure where to post - they mostly work for cocktail parties I guess but there's drinking and dancing going on - I'll keep updating as more parties ensue.

thanks so much for sharing this Moka. I've been listening to Stop Bajon almost daily since July, it's my new favourite! Now getting to grips with the rest of the playlist.

I don't know where in the world you are but a lot of the Italian / Spanish-language music was totally new to me. Pino D'Angio also seems like he will be getting some heavy rotation.
