Go ahead. But it doesn't alter the fact* that "Your Charms" is one of the greatest 3-and-a-half minutes of pop ever, and that nothing TWP did was anywhere near as spectacular.

"Kennedy" still shits all over it from a great, splattery height.

Nick Cave's Bad Seeds stuff to the Birthday Party.

Fugazi to Minor Threat & Rites of Spring

Chinese Stars to Six Finger Satellite

Kate, Dukes of Stratosphear ARE Xtc.

Weeeeell, not 100%. The Dukes do have Iain Gregory in the band, too. But close enough.

And Kate, XTC have sounded far closer to the Dukes since the Dukes' birth, except with a more modern studio sound.... so, I'm kinda confused by your comment, too.

I like Fantomas more than Faith No More, The Melvins, or Slayer. If I were someone else catching me say that, I would point and yell "BLASPHEME!", but alas I speaketh the truth.

Surprised that no one attempted to say New Order yet...

Blind Faith > Cream

I met a guy a couple of weeks ago who furiously maintained that Vinnie Vincent's Invasion and Frehley's Comet were both vastly superior to Kiss. Suffice to say, the conversation was very brief.

I prefer Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians over the Soft Boys.

I will literally shoot peas out of my nose if anyone says (and means) that they prefer the Style Council to the Jam.

There were a number of years in the mid-90s when Omoide Hatoba was more interesting to listen to than the Boredoms. If they ever put out another album, they might still be.

Breeders (Last Splash) > Pixies (though really, Frank Black's solo career has grown on me)
Royal Trux > Pussy Galore
White Hassle > Railroad Jerk

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:05 (twenty years ago) link

I was just about to say Frank Black > Pixies.

Sausage > Primus

Lots of people will probably also say:

Primus > Possessed

But I don't.

I much prefer New Order to Joy Division, but I don't think it's a good answer to this question because anyone who still "purports" that NO is a lesser group knows not what they say. It might have been justified when they first announced that they were going to stay together and add one of their girlfriends to the lineup, but not today...

IN WHAT UNIVERSE?

Frederick Thordendal's Special Defects > Meshuggah

Burning Airlines > Jawbox (oh I'm sure I'll get it for that one...maybe if I heard more Jawbox I would feel differently)

Mars Volta > At the Drive In. Er, having only heard about two tracks from each.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 July 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

it's a tossup with Joy Division and New Order: the former are probably more "legendary" but more people probably know the latter's hits. I like both a lot, obv.

Fleetwood Mac > Buckingham Nicks

Imperial Teen may be the only one I can think of unless New Order counts.

Fleetwood Mac > Fleetwood Mac
are you bigging up the Peter Green version over the Lindsey Buckingham version?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 July 2003 04:19 (twenty years ago) link

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 06:11 (twenty years ago) link

although your older ex-hippie types who bigup the Peter Green version but sniff sniff at Buckingham's annoy the fuck out of me
