i'd argue that being in a comic book makes you a superhero tho

goole, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

Batman has a mask and an alter ego.

Batman's a vigilante.

yeah, but come on, he's one of two characters that arguably invented and continues to define the superhero genre (w supes, natch). he's a superfriend, a member of the justice league, wears tights and a cape, battles supervillains, etc.

Batman that is a member of the Justice League and all that shit hasn't been in movies

Outside of a handful of periods, they're written as pretty different characters

"Superhero or not" is about the mootest damn question I can think of.

anyway...

disagree. the world in which batman exists is more self-contained in the movies than in the comics, not apparently a part of DC's superhero-dense universe, but the essence of the batman/bruce wayne character hasn't changed much in his transition from page to screen. he's very much in line with what we've seen in the comics over the last quarter century. nolan pushes the more fanciful elements to the margins in terms of a "realism" that's derived from espionage and action movies, but i don't see how this makes the character any less a superhero (though he is an unusual one, being powerless and all).

you'll be a superhero to me if you stfu

i nerd out about superhero semantics for the space of one post in the avengers thread. so what?

ok, withdrawn.

if you can let it go now.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

sheesh, italics and everything

re: expertise, i think superheroes would be a better set of "experts" to consult on the worthiness of this shit than professional comic book critics, who i assume would reject it out of hand

hahaha, works for me -- that C.A. "wank" quote was only ever meant to be a placeholder anyway.

I think if you save the life of one person (or stop a violent crime) then you are a hero, and if you multiply that to saving multiple lives - tens, hundreds, thousands - then you are a superhero.

I don't think having bizarre powers or life-altering mutations or whatever should be a requisite.

that's a pretty great and concise argument, am definitely going to use that if (god help me) i ever get caught in this kind of convo again

well the punisher kills a lotta people so i guess he's a supervillain?

not expecting to much to hate, honestly...? altho I'm not a fan of Transformers-style smashbangloudincomprehensibility action sequences so maybe I will hate those, I dunno.

first Marvel movie I will have watched since the first Iron Man movie, which was fine

smashbangloudincomprehensibility

This movie doesn't really have any of these.

great!

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 May 2012 23:21 (eleven years ago) link

nah it does but they're outweighed by the movie's other qualities

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 18 May 2012 01:54 (eleven years ago) link

The action scenes were totally comprehensible. They barely had any cuts! Very well orchestrated.

He's sick of the Swiss. He don't like em. (Austerity Ponies), Friday, 18 May 2012 16:20 (eleven years ago) link

The action scenes were almost irrelevant, tbh. The chemistry of the core is where the fun is at. Faceless aliens and snakemonsters flying about basically just there to give the Avengers things to hit.
