"I Don't Know" is nice and all, but one thing this poll reaffirmed for me is I really prefer loud yapping Beasties to dreamy/experimental Beasties.

I'm sure everyone agrees with you. "I Don't Know" is a good palate cleanser though, like Pellegrino after a night of drinking.

Yup. In the context of the album I like it just fine.

man you guys really like Hello Nasty
Hello Nasty is a good album! I think that's a pretty noncontroversial statement. Also, it's going to place exactly 1 song in the top 25, so it's not like it's beloved here above all else.

"Fight For Your Right" at #23 isn't quite as silly as "Whole Lotta Love" at #33 but it's still in the annals of ILM tracks poll foolishness

Isn't it just the ubiquity problem? It's a great song that I wore out in 1987; I don't hear the Beastie Boys often on the radio, but there's one station that will play "Fight for Your Right" now and again and nothing else.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link
Didn't vote for it. Though it made me a fan in '86, I'm cool with never hearing it again. Same with Paul Revere. Sorry.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link
Cf. "Satisfaction," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Sweet Home Alabama," countless others.

― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link
i've never held ubiquity against any song i actually like, except maybe during the moment of its peak popularity. once it becomes just another "golden oldie", i'll love it again just as i did before it got played to death. veggiegrrl otm:

DL -- are you actually saying you don't get tired of songs you once thought were great? Or do you approach these polls as if there's a correct answer?
― clemenza, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:05 (twelve years ago) link
I used to love the ubiquity argument but it was all I ever heard and now I'm sick of it.
― improvised explosive advice (WmC), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:05 (twelve years ago) link
i may get tired of them for a while, but if i really liked them in the first place, i'll eventually get over the "tired of them" part and come back around. i can always find room in my heart for the songs i love, even the popular ones.
― The term or title antichrist, in Christian theology, refers to (contenderizer), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:06 (twelve years ago) link
them = ubiquitous songs

Getting tired of songs you've overplayed yourself, or that have been overplayed by other people, seems like a fact of life for me--you acknowledge the song's greatness, remember when it's the only thing in the world you wanted to hear, but don't place it high on list of favourites if you don't want to hear it right now.
WmC--good one.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:08 (twelve years ago) link
I'd like to wager that a lot of ppl ITT know every single word to Fight without even playing it and if pressed you could still remember the first time you heard it or recount jumping around your bedroom to it or whatever and somehow that is completely meaningless because...why I have no idea
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:08 (twelve years ago) link
Ha WmC.
Quite often I'll pull some of the singles from my ballot 'cos I figure the rest of you will take up the slack, but no way was I pulling Fight For Your Right. I had it at #4, and was worried that was too low.
It is everything to love about pop music, right there.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:09 (twelve years ago) link
but don't place it high on list of favourites if you don't want to hear it right now.
no way, because otherwise my list of favorites would be dominated by whatever happened to sound fresh to me atm, and would take no account of how important things have been to me over the entire course of my life
― The term or title antichrist, in Christian theology, refers to (contenderizer), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago) link
shame shame shame on anyone who slighted "fight for your right" just because it happened to be hugely popular a quarter century ago
― The term or title antichrist, in Christian theology, refers to (contenderizer), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:11 (twelve years ago) link
Fight For Your Right was never my favorite off of that record. I know I'm sorta gonna regret not picking more than 2 LTI songs for my ballot, but I did what I could do with 20 spots.
― how's life, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:11 (twelve years ago) link
fight for your right, sweet home alabama and satisfaction are all awesome. whole lotta love is a steaming POS
― it's smdh time in America (will), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:13 (twelve years ago) link
And yes, I can come out the other side on that, too. For a long time, I stayed away from Taxi Driver--there was one time where I'd just seen it too many times. About five years later, it was like seeing it for the first time all over again. That happens too.
Contenderizer: that's one way to approach a list, but it's not the only way. I'd never list anything I didn't want to hear or watch right now. I'm trying to achieve some kind of 10- or 20-year mean. Other people do it your way.
You know, you're constantly complaining about people not understanding you--that's in now way what I said! I'm not punishing the song...
― clemenza, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:13 (twelve years ago) link
I didn't slight it because it was popular, I slighted it because it doesn't do anything for me anymore. That it was popular just means I still hear it even though I'd rather not.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:13 (twelve years ago) link
"not trying to achieve..." I meant to write.
