someone name a Scottish metal album from last year I can pretend to be butthurt about it not being on the list

cissémanwhore (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 15:05 (1 year ago) Permalink

holy mountains got an album out? my google is broken.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 15:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

mountain singular even,damn predictive typing.

Seems a worthwhile enterprise this. There have been a lot of bullshit award ceremonies set up for old musos to pat each other on the back, but this is actually credible. Decent enough selection, although Tattie Toes and Richard Youngs should be on there instead of landfill Twin Atlantic and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Hope the award goes to Muscles of Joy or Rustie, but there's a fair chane it'll go to King Creosote (zzz) or Aidan Moffat/Bill Wells (decent record, but far from either's best).

Holy Mountain album just came out - will be eligible for next year's award.

Richard Youngs is not Scottish, he may be based in Glasgow but he was born in Cambridge or somewhere

that's a decent list, but i think i'll direct my butthurt towards the lack of trembling bells.

richard's ours now. although by that standard i'm not. oh well.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 15:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

I know that, but as far as I'm concerned if he's based here he should be in. He's part of the local scene in a way a Scottish band who've moved to London, say, aren't - which isn't to say I'd exclude anyone on those grounds either. Doing these things on grounds of ethnicity is totally bogus. After all, only one of Trembling Bells is Scottish, but they've all been based here for years. Same goes for Tattie Toes and numerous other acts. It ain't where you're from, it's where you're at and all that.

tbh i still think of veronica falls as a scottish band, i claim everyone i can.

anyone based in scotland is eligible for inclusion no matter where they were born.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:38 (1 year ago) Permalink

Why was the voting only open for 24 hours? That seems a bit odd.

emil.y, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

Public vote was to narrow the longlist into a shortlist.

Poor.Old.Tired.Horse. (Stew), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:13 (1 year ago) Permalink

Ah, okay. I think.

emil.y, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:17 (1 year ago) Permalink

Yeah, that's still a bit brief though!

Goodbye 20th Centipede (NickB), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:21 (1 year ago) Permalink

something sinister about the scottish album of the year award being a turquoise hexaon

well, almost

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:22 (1 year ago) Permalink

Pretty sharp marketing. Brings a bit more urgency to the voting. Plus they streamed an album a day ahead of the public vote which is pretty good exposure for all concerned.

If the awards were based on artwork then Bwani Junction would have to get the wooden spoon. "Ok guys, so like, the album is called 'Fully Cocked', so get this - we'll put a COCK on the cover. No, not that kind of cock..."

That 6th Borough Project is a shameless and rather shoddy Ghost Box rip-off and the Twin Atlantic cover is just a bunch of shit.

Best covers are easily Rustie and RememberRemember.

I keep seeing dance partisan kinda ppl rep for Fudge Fingas but I can't bring myself to listen to something calling itself Fudge Fingas

A finga of fudge is just enough to give your kids a treat...

Went for the Conquering Animal Sound album, but there's quite a few good albums on the list. Seems like being (long)shortlisted has at least meant that the Happy Particles album has made it to CD, spotted copies in HMV.

michaellambert, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:02 (1 year ago) Permalink

Yeah, the Happy Particles album was pushed into a much-needed physical release because of their being nominated.

The final shortlist of ten was announced this morning and is as follows...

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins 'Diamond Mine'
Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat 'Everything's Getting Older'
Mungo's Hi Fi 'Forward Ever'
Twin Atlantic 'Free'
Rustie 'Glass Swords'
Mogwai 'Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will'
Conquering Animal Sound 'Kammerspiel'
Tommy Smith 'Karma'
Remember Remember 'The Quickening'
Happy Particles 'Under Sleeping Waves'

Apparently there were 9000 votes in the 24 hour long public voting period, which was won by Twin Atlantic.

I kinda feel that this is the obvious shortlist drawn from what was available? Still, it's good to be reminded what talents sit on our doorstep.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 17 May 2012 09:54 (1 year ago) Permalink

really surprised at Twin Atlantic fans being the sort of noodlebrained lemmings who egg each other on to vote en masse for an ultimately pointless award that they're never going to actually win

cissémanwhore (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

No Steve Mason. Boo :(

sort of expected this /hindsight

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 23:38 (1 year ago) Permalink

I was expecting King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, if anything.

Wells & Moffat was my favourite album of last year, so I can be happy with the result, even if I personally would rather have seen the award go to Happy Particles.

only NWOFHM! is real (krakow), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 07:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

Not my favourite Wells record, but it's cool he's getting his dues. And I'm glad it was that insipid and overrated King Creosote/Jon Hopkins album. There, I said it. I shall now be chased out of Scotland by irate Fifers.
