i don't know what makes that typical of us teen girls

― call all destroyer, Monday, May 14, 2012 11:39 PM (Yesterday)

I aggressively sniped at call all destroyer in a baseball thread once; I feel really bad now, finding out he's a teen girl.

In the same way I think sports talk radio and ESPN is way more popular than *actual* sports, I think that we're starting to see ”the market” (in a broad sense) start to cater to the internets endless need to talk about and blog about stuff

Like this, I mean it's clearly designed more to be talked about than listened to

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 13:50 (eleven years ago) link

the internet has kind of become its own regional scene, surely i'm not the first person to say that (if not here)

i kinda think she's on to something tbh

goole, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

If I like Uffie and Kreayshawn and Lady Sovereign, will I like Kitty Pryde?

Carrie Antwoord (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

certainly improves your chances

Jay, it's impossible to evaluate the quality of music so....

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

If for example you compare two artists and say "this artist is getting more hype because she's conventionally pretty but that artist is better", it doesn't mean you think that being conventionally pretty is a bad thing, it means you think that it's relevant to the creation and maintenance of uneven playing fields.

― Tim F, Tuesday, May 15, 2012 2:18 AM (8 hours ago)

sure, but if the criticism of an artist is limited to withering monosyllabic contempt, and her acclaim is being derided as a product of her appearance, it seems reasonable to at least question the relationship between the two.

flattery will get you everywhere

Seriously though, this is rockist and w/e but duck dunn and levon and mca passing kinda makes me realize how little time we all have on this planet and now that there is literally an infinite number of things you could pay attention to or think about, maybe the real fundamental battle of our time is trying to really focus and prioritize your attention....like I've never heard Brahms but I've posted several times in a thread about some semi clever 15yr old girl that raps on youtube

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:41 (eleven years ago) link

you will open your eyes and scream. for a time there will be a procession of colored lights. then nothing.

*waits for brahmswave to hit*

whiney was having an interesting (no really!) discussion on twitter abt this, tumblrwave type shit like this being as much about how much easier it is to be a 'journalist' when all you have to do is go thru someone's online presence & report on what you found there instead of, say, being paid to fly down to louisiana and cover the lil boosie trial

man down (D-40), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:48 (eleven years ago) link

that is unfortunately still some narcissism of small differences bullshit, like i guess if you fly down to LA to cover a lil boosie trial you might feel superior to someone surfing myspace in their underwear but neither of you are doing particularly difficult or commendable works of 'journalism.'

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

well, no, that's not true at all

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

anyone got a livestream of the lil boosie trial

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

it is kind of fun to see the world's foremost youtube rap critic act like tumblr rap crit is a 100% different and 100% worse pursuit

kitty shayme (some dude), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:59 (eleven years ago) link

well, that's bullshit al

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:00 (eleven years ago) link

thats a really unfair characterization of the work i do buddy

man down (D-40), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:00 (eleven years ago) link

i mean i get that your entire purpose on this thread at this pt is to troll me but come on, fight the real enemy

man down (D-40), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:01 (eleven years ago) link

sometimes i get confused about who the real enemy is

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:01 (eleven years ago) link

i'll go on the cross for deej on this one

regardless of how much importance you give to local rap music, deej has gone out and interviewed and reported pretty long and involved features on important rappers in his city... doing work not many people knew to do or wanted to do. so yeah, that was a pretty bullshit remark coming from a dude writing an entire book on local rap.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:03 (eleven years ago) link

which of you rap crits is which avenger

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

nah listen deej does a lot of real research, but he also uses the shit out of a popular internet portal, we all do. i'm just beating him with the same stupid stick he's beating other strawcritics with.

kitty shayme (some dude), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

pretty flimsy, bruh

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

well i mean, not to keep drawing out the obvious comparison, but a year ago deej saw kreayshawn's youtube, and blogged about it and interviewed her as quickly as possible. this year a bunch of other people are doing the same thing w/ KP, and other than firsties and song quality i don't feel like there's a world of difference there.

kitty shayme (some dude), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

p sure deej is captain america and whiney is the hulk

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

how can captain america be an avenger and have no discernible personality

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

he gets twitchy when you mess with his idealistic values

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw this is def one of the worst songs i've ever heard

kitty shayme (some dude), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

just another male critic crapping on a teenage girl

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:43 (eleven years ago) link

can't wait to see the google traffic from that post

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:43 (eleven years ago) link

Idk al I think theres a diff between me interviewing an artist who did a song I like for a personal website vs an nyt article

the thing is, I agree with you, and strongly actually, but one should be on guard against putting too much value on these distinctions imo. "the harder get-your-hands-dirty work that the current generation doesn't have to do" sort of stance is a p. bad look that'll glide quietly but perniciously into old-manism if you're not super-cautious about it </unsolicitedolddudeadvice>

by the way this music sounds awful and none of you should be paying any attention to it there is way better stuff to listen to rap is awesome listen to good rap music and not this stuff lol

cosi fan whitford (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

i totally agree with deej w/r/t kitty pryde's coverage. right now she deserves, at best, a small introductory box-out (in big-deal outlets like the NYT). not a fucking huge thinkpiece. i don't think that's symptomatic of kitty pryde specifically so much as music critics yet again being dumb suckers for gimmicks and novelty and stuff, esp in hip-hop and r&b, that deviates from the still-despised norm.

idk who actually wrote the thinkpiece but i probably feel vaguely contemptuous towards them - this is not a thing i would have dreamed of pitching and y'know what i'm proud of that - but i blame the editor way way more.

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

the times piece is not "fucking huge," also only like a third of it is really about kitty pryde

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:28 (eleven years ago) link

the piece is *actually* about karmin

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:29 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah AS I HAVE SAID ALREADY caramanica being employed at the new york times throws off the hype cycle, he should be fired

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:29 (eleven years ago) link

oh i got the impression from the hand-wringing it was huge

you didn't think i'd read it did you?

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:29 (eleven years ago) link

OMG lol it was caramanica? the dude who pitched and was commissioned and wrote the pitchfork reviews reviews piece? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL what a disgrace to everything he is

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:30 (eleven years ago) link

i like caramanica but then again i like, sort of, PRR, so

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:31 (eleven years ago) link

i also like 'ok cupid'

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

max, it was still 300 words in the NYT. most of those words aren't very good or informative, but still, that's a decent amount of exposure in the paper of record

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

i like caramanica but then again i like, sort of, PRR

i could never zing him as effectively as this

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

i'm sort of nostalgic for the old days of this thread, when everyone was on fire with the passionate fragrance of youth

300 words in the NYT vs 700 posts on ILM

♆ (gr8080), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

ilx raison d'être is to discuss inane shit tho

well, maybe the NYT's too

i didn't realize the caramanica nyt thing was being held up as the main crime instead of however many other lower level outlets have also been covering nyt. so the problem is kreayshawn took x months to get thinkpieces in a bunch of big papers where KP took x days? things are moving faster all the time, my friend.

kitty shayme (some dude), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

'have also been covering KP,' i meant to say
