Animal Collective's Brian Weitz (aka Geologist) spoke with Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 last night to discuss the band's newly announced album Centipede Hz. Lovers of early Animal Collective, rejoice: Weitz said the band has moved away from Merriweather Post Pavilion's sound and "back to our roots."
The band members all moved back to the Baltimore area to record together. Weitz said, "We got a little practice space in this barn on Josh [Dibb, aka Deakin]'s mom's property and it was basically like being a garage band again."
That means you'll find less sampling on Centipede Hz than on Merriweather, and more organic instrumentation. "This one we wrote more as a rock band in a room and we wanted to record it that way as well." Weitz also mentioned that they've played most of the music on the record live on tour over the past year.

Is it a rule that you can't have heard the live versions before doing this? Cos I haven't and now that I think about it yeah maybe some people have.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:02 (1 year ago) Permalink

Perhaps so! Doesn't matter, live versions don't always sound like the studio ones anyway.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:03 (1 year ago) Permalink

It's a shame if AC have taken a step backwards for this record, hoping that ILX are going to take up the slack a bit.

Goodbye 20th Centipede (NickB), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:06 (1 year ago) Permalink

in the interest of trolling youtubers, i fully endorse ppl hearing the live versions first and then attempting the most ~creative~ interpretation of them, though i realize that may go against the ILX Pre-Cover philosophy

We'll rent a state-of-the-art studio in NYC, take over two floors of a nearby hotel, pay a guru to make sure that the 'chi' is balanced, and then get loaded on 100 year old brandy and coke.

Ha ha I won't listen to live bootlegs of as yet unreleased animal collective songs for less than 50 dollars american....

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

Crap i don't think "Wide Eyed" has been performed live yet.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:34 (1 year ago) Permalink

At least an initial youtube search indicates as such.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:34 (1 year ago) Permalink

I was thinking "ha ha, we should totally pre-cover the next Radiohead album" but then I remembered that 1) they drop their albums so quickly there's not time to and 2) fans are so obsessive that they already pre-cover the songs the minute that they're played live.

I dunno, what's fun about these comps is covering a song with ~absolutely no idea~ what the original should sound like.

j3ff i can play clarinet

yorba linda carlisle (donna rouge), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

Yeah ppl I agree w wcc, don't listen to these songs! You will never really ”get gone” if you do!

Who is Animal Collective to tell you what Animal Collective songs sounds like?

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:53 (1 year ago) Permalink

The joke is, I don't even particularly like Animal Collective and I would actually think I'd completely failed if my track ends up sounding anything like theirs. :-P

They have fangs, They have teeth! (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:57 (1 year ago) Permalink

My first decision - fake Avey tune or fake Panda Bear. So much to work with in either case.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 18:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

I have a basic idea but I guess I'll just let it evolve in my head lazily until the deadline gets closer and I have to rush to finish the song !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 11:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

Free reign, but I like the idea of some sort of formal requirement otherwise. Any suggestions?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or are we just leaving things open? I've got some ideas for my track and don't want to get ahead of myself.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 11:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

I also like the idea of a formal constraint but can't really think of an interesting/good one...

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 12:04 (1 year ago) Permalink

No Synths?

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 12:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

that may cut it down to half a volume worth of tracks!

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 12:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

oh no, I need synths !

you'll find less sampling on Centipede Hz than on Merriweather

no samples ?

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

i can't really work without samples, don't own a drumkit etc etc

ciderpress, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:09 (1 year ago) Permalink

I can work without samples, synths, guitars, and acoustic instruments, but then you will more or less be getting electronic noise with someone shouting over the top.

banal like anal (snoball), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:12 (1 year ago) Permalink

if anybody wants it, here's a little reference on what "garage band" AnCo used to sound like 10 yrs ago:

(thx Ned for signing me up for vol 2! already thinking hard about the tune)

V79, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

What I have in mind will be made up of samples, acoustic guitar and percussion - purely because that's what I have at hand but it does seem fitting for AC.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:41 (1 year ago) Permalink

Maybe the formal requirement is a mewling baby somewhere.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 14:15 (1 year ago) Permalink

pooing babies surely?

pandemic, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 14:44 (1 year ago) Permalink

i have little enough talent without placing formal constraints on myself

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:12 (1 year ago) Permalink

Yeah, pretty much thinking that after the time limit for the last one that's about as far as we can/should go.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:13 (1 year ago) Permalink

the only rule for this i could possibly get behind is requiring everyone to say "C'MON JAMES!" at least once per song

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:17 (1 year ago) Permalink

Or having that generic owl noise Panda Bear used on Person Pitch

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:44 (1 year ago) Permalink

the only rule is there are no rules !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:09 (1 year ago) Permalink

So in a colossal bout of annoying my upstairs neighbours, I've finished recording this. It's going to be a pain in the arse to mix it, though. Maybe the twist can be that everybody sends their track off to someone else to mix it? And the person who mixes it (or remixes it) submits the finished track without playing it for the original artist first? That would be v v funny.

They have fangs, They have teeth! (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Sunday, 20 May 2012 14:44 (1 year ago) Permalink

dammit, I missed this.

crüt, Sunday, 20 May 2012 14:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

Do you want to mix my track, Crut? ;-)

They have fangs, They have teeth! (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Sunday, 20 May 2012 14:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

possibly! what form is the unmixed version in?

crüt, Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:25 (1 year ago) Permalink

That's a cool idea

Mark G, Sunday, 20 May 2012 16:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

I did it in Reason/Record (which seems to be a format that no one uses) can you read that at all?

I've got a rough mix on MP3 now...

They have fangs, They have teeth! (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Sunday, 20 May 2012 16:57 (1 year ago) Permalink

i came up with some lyrics, which i may or may not use. they started out funny but got a bit bleak.

Oops that was supposed to be a text to my wife

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 20 May 2012 22:49 (1 year ago) Permalink

maybe that should be our formal constraint. all tracks have to contain that post as a lyric.

sarahell, Sunday, 20 May 2012 22:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

Just throw in something about warm family feelings and farting flowers.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 May 2012 23:27 (1 year ago) Permalink

WCC - I use Reason v4.0 (no Record sadly) & I can also work with .wav/.mp3 files. my ILXmail goes to a defunct address so if you want to contact me via email my addy is curtis.stephens (AT) gmail (DOT) com, but feel free to just ignore & do your own thing if that is what you would prefer.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 May 2012 03:09 (1 year ago) Permalink

After slapping a "pop" compression all over it, I decided the mix was fine but after listening to The Orb and Adrian Sherwood all afternoon I've decided to rip all of the 303 out and replace it with booming dub bass. Stop me before I ruin everything!
