show's getting weirder

show's getting better!

that also

raw feel vegan (silby), Monday, 14 May 2012 04:56 (eleven years ago) link

some great direction with Marnie realizing that she can't still be with Charlie, just sticking with her face uncomfortably long

so gross, everything, so gross

I'm interrupting my own viewing enjoyment to say: do none of these girls own a skirt that isn't a mid-thigh flare thing? It's making me crazy.

That is all. Brb.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 06:00 (eleven years ago) link

So much awkward. And yet! So many funny things!

Charlie is suddenly more interesting in the Marnie-dumping phase but lol that he can be bought with blowjobs and Marnie is a walking rmde

Hannah/Adam jerkfrontation was awkwardly hilarious. He is so almost-likeable and almost repulsive, it's kind of amazing.

Hoping part of the lynchpin of this is that she eventually stops doing what
everyone else tells her to. It's crazy! Like she wants to jerk off to her dude
& he says no? But then I remember it taking me a long time to own myself so hurm...pot kettle black lol

its like a target ad

(Name Withheld to Avoid Hassle) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 May 2012 13:31 (eleven years ago) link

It was like a Target ad though

raw feel vegan (silby), Monday, 14 May 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link

they never point out that girl on top is gonna bang her head on the loft in the target ad

(Name Withheld to Avoid Hassle) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 May 2012 13:36 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw, i didn't think she was gonna touch herself; I thought she was just gonna expose herself so he could watch.
"these are all hundreds!"

(Name Withheld to Avoid Hassle) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 May 2012 13:37 (eleven years ago) link

I am only up to episode 3, but I am reallly missing what people are seeing as almost-likeable about shirtless dude.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 14 May 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link

he's equally adrift and clueless and occasionally compassionate in a totally confounding way
"a guy like that will try anything. even love"

(Name Withheld to Avoid Hassle) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 May 2012 13:39 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't seen compassionate as much as "Oh yeah I've heard about this, this path leads towards no sex - well, better do something". He really seems the incarnation of the lowest possible amount of effort necessary for a guy to be in a big city relationship in 2012.

Tho it's possible that he gets better - certainly I'm hoping that demanding an apology after straight-up lying about getting a STD test is his low point*.

*or that if there's anything worse, it dents his charm.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 14 May 2012 13:47 (eleven years ago) link

I feel like this show finally shifted into second gear

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Monday, 14 May 2012 14:09 (eleven years ago) link

really wasnt into this ep

hannah trying to sex boss & jerk off scene feel like storylines so far from any semblance of reality or how ppl behave irl that they could only be constructed on a sitcom

johnny crunch, Monday, 14 May 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link

Since she only directed the first few episodes and only wrote the first...six?...it'll be interesting to see how this evolves.

caro's johnson (Eazy), Monday, 14 May 2012 14:49 (eleven years ago) link

Saw a teaser for season 2 where they go as a group to Abu Dhabi but can't afford to do or buy anything there until they get hooked up with a Prince whose parents pay for everything, including a palace, but who is sad because he'd trade it all to live in Brooklyn, based exclusively on what he's seen on TV, teaching the girls a valuable lesson that they should appreciate what they have going for them. It's sort of meta.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 May 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

'there's no suing app for your iphone' was pretty funny

akm, Monday, 14 May 2012 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

and pretty otm

(Name Withheld to Avoid Hassle) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

yeah he pretty much had her number with that one line.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:17 (eleven years ago) link

her response bugged me a little. seemed overamped for comedy's sake, but not in a successfully funny way. would have preferred that she just be mortified.

Hannah's pretty easy to troll

otm

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:35 (eleven years ago) link

I'm trying to figure out if I really like Jessa or not. ie Britisher.

I kind of like the way she goes about things. Except for showing up late to everything bcz that makes me IA. Feel like it's going to be awkward city once she starts fucking Weed-Dad.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

I have the biggest crush on her, her hippyish ways notwithstanding. I kind of think that Weed-Dad's wife is cottoning on to her husband's attraction.

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

she's the only one of the central four that i really dislike so far. then again, she's the only one outside hannah who's at all interesting.

I kind of think that Weed-Dad's wife is cottoning on to her husband's attraction.

yeah, that the was the all-caps point of her "catching" them chatting in the bathroom

Weed LeGros

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah the look on Mom's face even before she says anything: 100% clear she knows what's going on w/ Weed Dad

O_O that Jessa used her lipstick. That's one of those things where I'm like 'that's kind of badass'/'wtf you are the worst person alive' ... I just can't come down on one side or the other. I like that she does what she wants but I cannot conceive of this as a practical lifestyle in any way shape or form, lol

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

I think that's the comedy of her character though. She's just walking around like some 3rd Rock From The Sun alien and everyone just totally buys it

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:49 (eleven years ago) link

I like Jessa provided she doesn't turn out be actually made of evil. Shoshanna started out as a cipher but I'm starting to like her more over the last couple of eps. 'No, totally not an attached bleeder' was k classic.

Suspect they will keep sincere carpenter bf in the show even if they stay broken up, what with how much character he's acquired recently.

Dreading what might happen when we exhaust the auteur scripts, hope show does not go to hell.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:49 (eleven years ago) link

she's the only one outside hannah who's at all interesting.

Again with the 'Jemima went to school w/Lena' angle - the writing (though admittedly not based on her irl) may just contain more versimilitude or be written to her abilities.

'wtf you are the worst person alive'

It's kind of emblematic of a pretty blithe girl used to getting what she wants. Didin't the wife basically say, 'don't worry I get those sent to me in the mail', i.e., 'keep it, I don't know where your lips have been'?

i assume that she brags about how long it's been since she last washed her hair, and that's it's "healthier that way"

oh yeah, forgot about that! shoshanna's dialogue during that scene was 100% great.

Carpenter Charlie suddenly turned into a great character with that whole diary thing.

I feel like the Diary Song was my turning point in liking the show...it was a good way to give a group of characters something to DO finally

and otm re shoshanna, I loved that whole exchange with the boy from camp, all of it felt very real and sweet and funny and she was way less annoying to me after that

i dunno man; her bit about hatefucking her ex to make a point about how weak and meaningless his love for his fiancee is was NAGL. The "i am unsmoteable" schtick was a major nail in the coffin of my finding her hawt

(Name Withheld to Avoid Hassle) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

Meh

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Monday, 14 May 2012 21:57 (eleven years ago) link

supersubjective reactions to each GIRL:

hannah: exasperation and occasionally the same kind of really unpleasant identification i had with mark in peep show (i had to stop watching peep show for this reason)

shoshanna: pity (i mean there's not a lot to hold on to in this characterization so far but i haven't seen the last episode)

jessa: amused attraction

marnie: total hatred, not partic proud of it but there it is

^ oh yeah, she seems to be a bad person, no question there. but we might like her anyway, right? abfab style. even if we don't find her that word you used.

i wasn't totally against her there, fwiw. why was he revisiting her, and did he really expect it was gonna make her feel any better? he seemed like a callow dick. to the hatefuckery with him.

Yeah, I didn't make too much of it except that they both kind of used each other.

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Monday, 14 May 2012 22:02 (eleven years ago) link

Also, ex bf's style was intolerable so eff him.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Monday, 14 May 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

I kinda liked it (esp on the windowsill through the fire escape, that was a nice touch). and that guy's motivations were pretty douchey so no love lost there, really.

porkpie hat/pencil mustache - you must leave now. and was he wearing longjohns at the end there? shudder.

I just find her 'principles' very interesting and I kind of enjoy her because she's just so different to the other girls. I like that she just acts on her urges and isn't caught up with the social explanations for things...but I wonder if she knows how to be anything but fuckable, because of that.

meh I'm just making shit up now

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 22:06 (eleven years ago) link

she's funny to me because she reminds me of spectacularly bad relationships i've been in with sexy, "free spirited" women prone to wrapped skirts

I also like her because she doesn't wear giant heels and mid-thigh skirts LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS SHOW

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

xp - then again, that's probably also why she gets on my nerves so much...

have def dated her and it def did not work out but it's not like i'd un-date her
