watched/listened to the first three tubes. "justin bieber" is kind of funny, other two didn't do much for me. the only genuinely creepy video is the third, but that seems to be some fan thing, so i can't be too bothered.

seems like something that would genuinely appeal to someone, but i can't imagine listening to it for pleasure.

okay, those are great lines, johnny. what are they from?

just relistened to the three tracks linked up top. have to admit that she's smart & funny, and i just on principle dig her POV cuz it's relatable, cleverly articulated and not often represented in her genre. still can't really "get into" this. partly it's that i don't like her voice or the way she delivers her lines, and partly it's that i feel that this music isn't for me, somehow. not that i'm forbidden to tread, but it's too far away from my frame of reference & interests. like the giggly shit and passivity probably read "real" to the people who are into it, but they just get on my nerves.

Define "dumb garbage" in musical terms, please. She comes up with a lot of good lines. The sound of her voice goes well with the music. So what's the problem?

If Tumblr was a person, it would sound like Kitty Pryde, and that's a good thing

BY
DAVID SHAPIRO

This morning, The FADER brought us the premiere of Kitty Pryde's "Okay Cupid" video starring the 17-year-old Daytona Beach, FL, rapper (that name sounds familiar, right?), who lit up the internet with the song when it dropped on April 11. She calls herself "the jailbait Hayley Williams of rap," and that sounds about right.

In the vein of internet superstars like Kreayshawn and Lana Del Rey, Pryde crafts tracks and videos with wide ranges of influence (hardcore rap, MacBook cameras, teen idolatry) that sound instantly appealing. But artists of this ilk raise the worthless questions that get bloggers' and commenters' blood boiling: Is it legitimate for a 17-year-old white girl with red hair to be rapping? Does liking her make you cool or lame?

Key word here - "worthless"

it sucks.

sarahell, Saturday, 12 May 2012 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

don't think it sucks. just don't like it much. figure it's music for teens, and they can make of it what they will.

it's kind of weird but i don't know that i've ever felt so strongly that my personal response to an artist was so entirely irrelevant in trying to work out whether or not they're "any good". nor do i really care to have an opinion about the latter. to me, this shit is science fiction, like something that's maybe happening on mars.

Scintillating questions from the dude who constantly brags about not listening to new rap music

markers, Saturday, 12 May 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

Doesn't warrant one.

come on, sure it does. there have been lots of offhand slams in this thread, but no thoughtful criticism. which makes the collective distaste seem sort of toothless and silly, like it's more a knee-jerk, prejudicial reaction to the persona* than a meaningful evaluation of the music

* like maybe just guys hating on "girly shit", perennial human theme

10. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” – Tom Cruise (contenderizer), Saturday, 12 May 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah def the problem here is people dismissing this outright than supporting fashion mags masquerading as rap experts hitting REPOST REPOST REPOST because they see internet dollar signs whenever a cute white girl says the n-word

thommys got bendz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 12 May 2012 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

i have close to zero interest in this music but can i just ask - are the lyrics upthread real or made up?

the late great, Saturday, 12 May 2012 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

"but i gotta be true to my art / and soon you'll be exactly like elizabeth smart"

this just sounds like the sort of awful awkward shit i have to listen to when humanities teachers are like "oh yeah, sure you guys can do a rap video for your history presentation"
