my cats growing up would eat both birds and mice. there was usually a bit of a mess left over - feathers, tails, feet what have you

When our cats have encountered mice, they got agitated and then just stared them in puzzled awe.

I have heard a biologist refer to mice as "nature's popcorn", but this is provides an unexpected proof-of-concept.
