would like to see Day of the Tentacle reboot

Another Maniac Mansion game will probably happen in time, but given how all the principles are currently working on other KS projects, I wouldn't expect any announcement for the next 2 years.

Ron Gilberts non-KS game is revealing soon tho

is it too late to declare a vintage-game-revival-kickstarter bubble

Idk where I got that rumour about Thief 4 from, but it was nonsense. It's still languishing at Eidos Montreal, no news from them since 2009, though they still say it's 'coming soon' on their website. Bum.

i think a more realistic goal for once they reach $100k would be 'hire a coder', but what do i know

thomp, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:34 (2 years ago) Permalink

really wonder how many of these are going to end up with an actual finished game

(let alone a good one)

man it's a shame because that concept artwork for zombie playground is awesome, but i'm with thomp, 100k seems mad unrealistic

$10,000 to write some gaming columns?

They made $500 per article? I need to change careers

Nhex, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 01:52 (2 years ago) Permalink

i don't know Computer Gaming World's advertising numbers from then, but $500 per article is not really a shocking amount for a long piece in a big media magazine (of course video game journalism is mostly horrific so even if normative it's generally undeserved...)

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 02:20 (2 years ago) Permalink

they made $1000 (split), and i was under the impression that it was like, a back-of-book column and not a long feature

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 03:30 (2 years ago) Permalink

still even so, raising $10,000 to write 10 wacky video game articles just seems... misguided

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 03:31 (2 years ago) Permalink

lets start a videogames little magazine

Heard about this one through a podcast I listen to. Think it sounds quite interesting for a $5 investment:

(Not sure this is the right place to put that, really - not a problem with Kickstarter itself... but I guess we don't have a 'Rolling Misogynist Gamers' thread.)

emil.y, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:12 (2 years ago) Permalink

"Black people are scum"
"Jews are cheap bastards"
"Muslims are the root of all violence"
Replace "black people", "jews", and "muslims" with the word "Men" and somehow you get sentences that are socially acceptable within our society.
Funny how sexism goes both ways.

i think 'rolling misogynist gamers' might be interesting tbh. or 'rolling gamers are the most disgusting savages', for broadness' sake

i think we DO have a misogynist gamer thread?

There was this thread, which mentioned the incident I think forks is referring to (or maybe not - the live-streamed fighting game competition where a female competitor took a whole lot of very ugly trash-talking):

Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

If Ron Gilbert did a fundraiser for making his version of Monkey Island 3 i would totally kick in $$$. The real one was such a letdown after 2.

i see no problem with this - there are several long-running webcomics that survived this way long before kickstarter. good luck to them. (it's just kinda weird that they're doing this after publishing a load of books)

Nhex, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 04:06 (2 years ago) Permalink

They come across as dicks in the pitch video. And the items in the pitch are backwards - does anyone care about the advertising on their website? It isn't the intrusive screen filling pop-up blare-y video kind. As I understand it, the real core of this idea is that if they get enough money, they'll be able to turn down corporate commissions and have more time to make additional comics for their website.
It's an experiment really. And they're probably the only webcomic that could do this without a lot of risk - if they don't get the funding they'll carry on as before, if they get funded for a first year but not a second, they'll go back to the model they use now.

All of the Penny Arcade "joke" gifts are seriously unfunny. It's just like "AHAHAHAHA HE'LL CHASE A DUCK! A DUCK! MY WHAT AN ABSURD NOTION". And I'm having to give them the benefit of the doubt that the "we'll follow you on twitter for a year for $500" is also a joke, because if not... Jesus, man.

emil.y, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 13:40 (2 years ago) Permalink

As much as I dislike the Penny Arcade guys, I dislike snarky attention seeking tossers even more.

I hate Penny Arcade but if nerds want to throw their money away to help make a website they enjoy less visually cluttered, it's fine by me.

yeah, i'll buy one too. I think OUYA needs its own thread
