Sorry, the lack of terminal punctuation, and I just couldn't resist.

i read the reader every week while eating saturday morning breakfast and drinking tankards of coffee. not looking forward to sun-times level coverage AT ALL.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, I was wondering whether Sun Times was buying just the Reader or Creative Loafing and Creative Loafing doesn't even own it anymore. I feel like I should start reading it because I now have a narrative of it as a scrappy little paper that keeps on trucking even though everybody sells it.

xp Well, if the Sun Times just lets it keep on being the Reader, like the previous two owners have let it keep on being the Reader, it should be okay.

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

I sure hope so.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:21 (eleven years ago) link

I bought the physical Sunday NY Times a few weeks ago for the first time in years and it was GREAT

Yeah, I do this maybe twice a year. (I try to pick up the fall arts preview, but I don't always remember.) I particularly love when I'm drawn to stories that I know I wouldn't have bothered clicking online.

Carrie Antwoord (jaymc), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:21 (eleven years ago) link

I've basically eliminated all suntimes from my life. Paper and avoid clicking on links whenever possible.

Jeff, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

This bit is ominous, however:

The acquisition may also give the chain a tool for attracting a younger audience and battling RedEye, Tribune Co.'s daily Chicago tabloid that targets that audience.

"The Tribune's got RedEye and that's a competitor with the Reader and this gives them a vehicle to go after some of those advertising dollars," said Thomas Yoder, one of the Reader's former owners who still has stakes in alternative papers outside Chicago.

puke

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

The RedEye is a fucking blight, a perversion of the written word.

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

also not sure how a weekly would compete with a daily?

fuckin print media

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:28 (eleven years ago) link

I'm ok with print media as long as it does NOT SUCK.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:31 (eleven years ago) link

^^^

I'll say this for the Sun Times. They are not the Chicago newspaper company dumping reams of garbage on my front step under the guise of coupons and advertising circulars and Parade Magazine. *glares angrily in the direction of the Tribune building*

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

Its pretty disgusting that anyone would hold up the RedEye as a good example of anything.

lmao at the old system. Seriously, who put that together and was like, "Yeah. Now that is a trash collection system that makes fucking SENSE!" *shotguns beer*

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Thursday, 10 May 2012 12:30 (eleven years ago) link

OIC

Aldermen have long resisted the change because trash pickup is one of the few city services over which they have direct control. The current system allows aldermen to promptly respond to constituent requests. Council members also have a say in the hiring of ward superintendents, the Streets and Sanitation employees who oversee trash pickup in each ward.

Buncha buttholes.

i had never seen one of those before but they seem like a potential sample goldmine for instrumental hip-hop/electronic/dance producers

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 10 May 2012 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, they are super weird, and have a ton of hits, but i have never heard of them.

Here is another one. Mugini Fusk.

Those videos are one of my favorite things on the internet ever!! I put them on a play long list sometimes and lol while I do housework.

You should post Goethe, so everybody else can think about the bus stop voice guy announcing "Goethe" that way.

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Thursday, 10 May 2012 14:45 (eleven years ago) link

There are actual pronunciation videos on YT (Pronunciate Guide?), and these are parodies. That's all I know.

Could be. Though hopefully they would figure it out from some of the absurd examples with silly voices.

My boss lives at 15th and Indiana in a 5 story condo, which has hired off-duty CPD as 24 hour security for the NATO days.

speaking of language, i'm reading this book and it's really interesting so far:

That totally sounds up my alley. When I was a kid I was a big fan of books about etymology, wordplay, and other linguistic topics. Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way, for instance. Books by avuncular British authors explaining Cockney rhyming slang.

Lx lite

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Thursday, 10 May 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

not a judgement btw, just how i categorize books like that in my head
i like some of them, not all of them

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Thursday, 10 May 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

Lx = linguistics?

What do you think about Deborah Tannen?

Carrie Antwoord (jaymc), Thursday, 10 May 2012 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

Yes.
Interesting, but kind of pseudosciencey and therefore not really very interesting to me personally as I don't really enjoy speculation about why as much as observation of what happens in people's language use. Basically I like description and not analysis.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Thursday, 10 May 2012 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

I like George Lakoff a lot.

I'm more interested in other various language issues than gender issues too, so that's another reason i feel ambivalent about 'men and women in conversation' type socio stuff. if i am reading about language, i'm usually reading about stuff more related to what i do at work.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Thursday, 10 May 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

I ask about Tannen only b/c my mom used to teach her books in her days as a speech/communication prof, and I thumbed through one once.

I think I read Lakoff's Moral Politics but don't know much about his straight-up linguistics work. IIRC, he seems influenced by the Wittgensteinian notion of "the limits of my language are the limits of my world" -- which I'm sympathetic to.

Carrie Antwoord (jaymc), Thursday, 10 May 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

i'm ok with linguistics light because i don't know anything about linguistics. same with pop science, pop history, whatevs, i just want to know a little bit about everything. that book though is more about the battles over the ideas of good grammar/spelling/etc than linguistics per se, it's more of a history book than a linguistics book.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 10 May 2012 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

I love linguistics light because linguistics heavy, even as distilled into wikipedia articles, is nearly incomprehensible to me.

That book looks inneresting to me.
