Another Maniac Mansion game will probably happen in time, but given how all the principles are currently working on other KS projects, I wouldn't expect any announcement for the next 2 years.

Idk where I got that rumour about Thief 4 from, but it was nonsense. It's still languishing at Eidos Montreal, no news from them since 2009, though they still say it's 'coming soon' on their website. Bum.

Nhex, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 01:52 (eleven years ago) link

i don't know Computer Gaming World's advertising numbers from then, but $500 per article is not really a shocking amount for a long piece in a big media magazine (of course video game journalism is mostly horrific so even if normative it's generally undeserved...)

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 02:20 (eleven years ago) link

(Not sure this is the right place to put that, really - not a problem with Kickstarter itself... but I guess we don't have a 'Rolling Misogynist Gamers' thread.)

emil.y, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

"Black people are scum"
"Jews are cheap bastards"
"Muslims are the root of all violence"
Replace "black people", "jews", and "muslims" with the word "Men" and somehow you get sentences that are socially acceptable within our society.
Funny how sexism goes both ways.

There was this thread, which mentioned the incident I think forks is referring to (or maybe not - the live-streamed fighting game competition where a female competitor took a whole lot of very ugly trash-talking):

Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

i see no problem with this - there are several long-running webcomics that survived this way long before kickstarter. good luck to them. (it's just kinda weird that they're doing this after publishing a load of books)

Nhex, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 04:06 (eleven years ago) link

They come across as dicks in the pitch video. And the items in the pitch are backwards - does anyone care about the advertising on their website? It isn't the intrusive screen filling pop-up blare-y video kind. As I understand it, the real core of this idea is that if they get enough money, they'll be able to turn down corporate commissions and have more time to make additional comics for their website.
It's an experiment really. And they're probably the only webcomic that could do this without a lot of risk - if they don't get the funding they'll carry on as before, if they get funded for a first year but not a second, they'll go back to the model they use now.

All of the Penny Arcade "joke" gifts are seriously unfunny. It's just like "AHAHAHAHA HE'LL CHASE A DUCK! A DUCK! MY WHAT AN ABSURD NOTION". And I'm having to give them the benefit of the doubt that the "we'll follow you on twitter for a year for $500" is also a joke, because if not... Jesus, man.

emil.y, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

Right now it's at $894K investment and $995K rewards - wouldn't have thought the ratio would be so close.
Kinda tempted to go on it as a lark, but probably not worth it given it'll take several years to recoup.

three months pass...

So, Hyper Light Drifter finally launched today. Backed it back in September 2013... Hard to be all that excited after such a long time. On the plus side, I'm finally down to just 1 outstanding Kickstarter (the Bitmap Brothers book) that I've paid for.

CraigG, Thursday, 31 March 2016 09:29 (eight years ago) link

I like Hyper Light Drifter a fair bit after an hour or so of playtime, but it's a little tough to tell what to do or where to go since the game works so hard to avoid giving verbal directions. some of the checkpoints are are frustratingly placed, too, although that may just be me learning how not to die. the good stuff (the art style, the controls, the level design, etc) is all really impressive, though - so far HLD feels like a game which occupies the precise midpoint between Another World and Bastion, although I'll obviously need to make more progress before I can decide whether it deserves to be compared to games as good as either of those.

So is Mighty No. 9 really as bad as everyone says? Watched a LP and was kinda shocked that it didn't look that much better than that GameCube version of Megaman from a decade ago.

Bloodstained pushed to 1st Half 2018. Bummer, but I'd rather see a great game late than a mediocre one on time.

Nhex, Friday, 9 September 2016 03:00 (seven years ago) link

if u happen to have an Xbox for some reason, earthlock released on 9/1 as September's free game for live. it's surprisingly fun if you enjoy basically cookie cutter jrpg types. there are a couple of interesting twists on usual mechanics (addicting if mindless agriculture) and the art style is pretty good. im estimating 30 hrs for playthrough.

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Friday, 9 September 2016 03:28 (seven years ago) link

Obduction, a true sequel to Myst, was excellent. The scenery was beautiful and the story was interesting. The weirdest thing was when I first started this game and realized I couldn't jump and I didn't have an inventory menu. But damn this game was beautiful and it gets you hooked right away. Though, if you aren't much of an adventure gamer or you plan on using hints I might not recommend this game to you. There could of been more puzzles with more variation. Slow load times are noticeable in a couple locations. Overall, I can't complain too much.
