i hate pineapple

Lamp, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 04:02 (eleven years ago) link

i also used to not understand why lots of good music writers aspired to nothing more than leaving it behind. then, unfortunately, i got it.

s.clover, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 04:02 (eleven years ago) link

My feelings about pitchfork and pineapple are similar.

sarahell, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 04:05 (eleven years ago) link

you find them sweet and chunky?

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 04:06 (eleven years ago) link

tom and maura among others have grappled with this -- how could a democratization of the conversation possibly be a bad thing, or at least not an unmitigated good? the straightforward answer is just, i think, lolmarketforces.

s.clover, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 04:06 (eleven years ago) link

xp - lol mookie, real answer: i very rarely consume either

the answer, i think, is that morally good /= "i actually want to read what you have to say" good

like, democracy is a wonderful ideal, but a very poor editor

yeah this is stupid as hell but i think i might've actually thought at one point that the easy instant access to music now meant that the descriptive role and judgmental role of rockcrit would fade away (you no longer needed the critic to tell you what a record sounded like or if it was good, you could find that out yrself immediately and in less time than it took to finish a review) and we'd be left w/ actual insight as the goal ie good criticism (or my definition anyway). this didn't happen, if anything the opposite. now post-deluge rockcrit's main role seems to be as a filter, ie i'll check out something if it gets best new music or 4.0 or higher at resident advisor etc but i pretty much never actually read an actual review and i'm not sure i've ever seen lex have any kind of actual insight but as a filter he's very effective, a much better algorithm than pandora or whatever.

This seems an appropriate time to mention that Ted Leo once interviewed both me and Perpetua backstage at Pitchfork Music Festival about our taste in fruit.

that seems like an oversimplification, if for no other reason than how many people on this message board must be overweight, including his tormenters

under appreciated some dude posts I have read

nothing but love for voice's old music section, nothing but love for voice's current music section really or at least much love to maura for the molanphy/shipley chart/radio geek rotation - if grantland had pop culture writing similar to this the gulf between their sports writing and pop writing wouldn't be quite so huge, could easily see molanphy as a bill barnwell parallel.

― balls,

That's a bit unfair, I dunno about his reviews but i've seen excellent lex posts full of insight that have made me actually want to check out whatever hes writing about.

"for example would LOVE to see the seward version of this"

thanks, but you know what, i'm inspired by marcello. he's basically writing a book on his blog and that seems like the way to go for me. just gonna keep posting essay-length things on my blog when i feel inspired (perhaps linking things thematically as if they were chapters), and when i have enough stuff, maybe see if anyone is interested in publishing. i do like the idea of real books.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

i do like the idea of real books.

I do too, and it's my wish to publish one in the next few years, but my conflict has always been how much attention to give non-fiction versus fiction, in addition to not wanting to surrender a quite decent job. I don't know. Confession time: I've been glum the last seven or eight weeks wondering what or the hell I'm writing for; although my blog gets a decent hit count I don't know whether it matters. I still do the occasional professional reviewing job. I just tell myself to keep writing, that the writing is its own defense. I don't ever envision a moment when I'll say the hell with it: I love it too much and I need it, pure and simple. But the question of who the audience is never fades.

one month passes...

http://www.housingworks.org/events/detail/fluxblog-live-10-years-of-perfect-tunes-with-rob-sheffield-emily-gould-mark

The world’s first mp3 blog celebrates its first 10 years with a live event featuring Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork editor-in-chief Mark Richardson, Emily Gould, Amanda Petrusich, Dick Valentine of Electric Six, Heather D’Angelo of Au Revoir Simone, Amy Rose of Rookie and other special guests. Each guest, along with Fluxblog proprietor Matthew Perpetua, will share a song and talk about it – basically replicating the Fluxblog format on stage.

He's still running with this idea, huh? I wish he would just say "one of" the first instead of THE first. Doesn't diminish Fluxblog's pedigree, but is also factual.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

can ILX start referring to itself as "The World's First Internet Message Board" ?

tylerw, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:42 (eleven years ago) link

i was gonna say that iirc the little capsule bio on his twitter includes the 'first mp3 blog' line but looking at it now it doesn't, so i guess he changed it pretty recently

happy birthday to my blog

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 25 June 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

I will give him credit due for keeping the thing going for 10 years with almost no vacations, though. Every time I start a new blog, I'm already sick of it in a month.

would be cooler if he was just up onstage w/ a laptop live-bloggin so hard

tylerw, Monday, 25 June 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

this event will only be fun if, in the middle of one contributor's talk, someone else shouts "REMIX!" and takes over the discussion, talking about the song from a totally different starting point/angle

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Monday, 25 June 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

ooh I hope that happens

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 June 2012 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

I genuinely like that idea from an audience and performance point of view, but it's not rly ~fluxblog~. dude probably posts one remix a year, and only one in ten years of something he's already posted
