Finished products used as ingredients have always seemed weird to me. Even stuffing/dressing is odd.
OTOH, I'm kind of a master of combining independently complete foods, so it shouldn't seem that strange to me.

They have a candy bar filled with it, which is awesome. Now they just have to make a cookie with chunks of the candy bar baked into it.

Let me just say that the frozen turkey meatballs are the best I've had outside of my Abruzzo-born great grandmother's kitchen. Like, for any meatball period, not just turkey.

I had those tonight based on all the recommendations in thuds thread. Yum! A little salty, as tj products tend to be.
― tehresa, Friday, 18 May 2012 03:09 (eleven years ago) link
Thuds thread? And yeah I can kinda see them being a tad on the salty side, but not overwhelmingly so.

trader joes MYSTERIES: the sesame bagels are 20 cents cheaper than the plain bagels
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 18 May 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link
maybe the plain bagels are sesame bagels that have been de-seeded by migrant farmers.
― Philip Nunez, Friday, 18 May 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link
too much salt is just enough salt
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 18 May 2012 18:10 (eleven years ago) link
Yeh, I agree with Jordan (and Jeff, I'm sure). The meatballs are not salty in my opinion.
I thought I was weird for loving those meatballs! I'm glad to get confirmation that they actually are very good.
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Friday, 18 May 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link
love those meatballs as well. u r not alone
― tobo73, Saturday, 19 May 2012 02:05 (eleven years ago) link
I think basically anything I don't make from scratch seems too salty to me.

i was disappointed in those chocolate salt & sugar almonds :/
― sarahell, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 01:56 (eleven years ago) link
If they were the same salted almonds Donna Rouge had in his pantry this one time (I think they had a yellow label?) then you are sooooorely mistaken.

would eat.
tried the chicken mole (from the freezer section). it was good, but a little goes a long way. the sauce is very thick and complex.

I'll chime in again for the Chicken Gorgonzola (frozen section). Large enough for three servings.

Those thai lime & chili cashews reappeared after having been sold out. I bought two packages.

xp - i have. it was ok. definitely could've been more yum imo

their lentil wrap is just okay but i would drink a gallon of the accompanying spicy tahini sauce.

and i've said it before, but the pumpernickel pretzel sticks are awesome -- they're crying out for a nice sharp fondue or at least a "pub cheese."
― modest mouskouri (get bent), Monday, 4 June 2012 03:17 (eleven years ago) link
the trader joe's pub cheese is gross. it's just cheez whiz.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 4 June 2012 03:19 (eleven years ago) link
most pub cheese is gross. but it has a perverse appeal for me.
― modest mouskouri (get bent), Monday, 4 June 2012 03:21 (eleven years ago) link
wtf is pub cheese? i've seen it, and it just looks like cheez whiz in a tub
― sarahell, Monday, 4 June 2012 04:19 (eleven years ago) link
that's what it is
― J0rdan S., Monday, 4 June 2012 04:29 (eleven years ago) link
yes, but why do they call it "pub cheese" - is it for aspirational "yuppies" that like british things and see themselves as above eating cheez whiz in a tub?
― sarahell, Monday, 4 June 2012 08:14 (eleven years ago) link
I like it. But I'm also a cheese whiz fan.
― Jeff, Monday, 4 June 2012 10:26 (eleven years ago) link
"pub cheese" (and port wine cheese, and low-end cheese spreads)
― modest mouskouri (get bent), Monday, 4 June 2012 10:40 (eleven years ago) link
I tried to like port wine cheese and I just cannot.
The four-cheese jumbo raviolis they have w the fresh pasta are prob like top 10 TJ's products btw

Their cheese tortellini (from the dry pasta aisle, not the refrigerated kind) is not great. Some of the ones that are more tightly folded don't absorb enough water and the cheese inside stays dry and grainy.
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 17:11 (eleven years ago) link
I don't know if I could ever trust shelf-stable dry tortellini
― Delbert Botts, D.D.S. (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 4 June 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link
Also those chocolate croissants were flaky in the wrong kind of way, and also pretty bland.
― Delbert Botts, D.D.S. (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 4 June 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link
Jesse OTM. That shelf-stable tortellini is just not good. I don't know if all shelf-stable tortellini is like that or if it's specific to TJs. I do really like the spinach and cheese tortellini in the refrigerated section.
― carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link
Really? All I tasted was pasta and no filling :(
― Delbert Botts, D.D.S. (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 4 June 2012 18:50 (eleven years ago) link
I've had shelf-stable tortellini from other grocery stores that were just fine. Not amazing, but very decent for convenient tortellini when you need them.
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link
"need"
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link
Haha also, I'm not sure how inconvenient cheese tortellini that you keep in the freezer is (I buy the stuff from the refrigerator section and freeze it).
― carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 20:56 (eleven years ago) link
It didn't occur to me to do that.
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link
Given your proclivity for freezing things, that kind of shocks me! But I'm glad you found out now, when you're young and have many years of freezing tortellini ahead of you.
― carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link
Right now I have a zip lock bag of milk in my freezer. Why because I don't keep milk around very much anymore and sometimes I need some for cooking.
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:21 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah that sounds about right.
