fwiw, i thought the whole Adele sore throat thing was a legit medical thing, which is why she's been talking about retiring.

that's the problem when you book and then cancel a tour for weird reasons, ppl start distrusting yr motivations

xps

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Monday, 7 May 2012 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

well, its one thing when its like Guns N Roses/Adele whatever when the venues need the artists more than the artists need the venue.

Like, dude has been touring 10 years and knows the importance of like making sure the dude from TT The Bear's isnt pissed at you, which is why i think there's probably something bigger going on

Not to be confused with bullshit Beirut/Wavves/xx crybaby tantrums of having never toured a day in your life and then bailing because it;'s actually hard work

Really curious what the actual story is here and bummed that I won't be seeing them (again).

death grips vs animal collective: who will suffer more backlash on their next album?

(ps after having seen death grips in a very small diy venue, I will say you probably want them to reschedule to a bigger place. unless you like punk kids bo)

xp - i think there was also a lot of cheap bear spilled on the floor at that show: such an iconic perfume.

sarahell, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

Cheap bears?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:37 (eleven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Ride is developing a Mark E Smith level talent for non sequiturs that end up sequituring

― bendy, Wednesday, April 25, 2012 12:14 PM

i can see that. there's something about the money store that makes it sound like ride is embracing humour a bit more, but maybe i wan't getting it from exmilitary because it was sung in ALLCAPS.

the tricky/trip hop connection someone made upthread is an interesting one... something that never really occurred to me before. i can see geoff barrow really liking death grips.

whoops. i guess it shows i haven't been here in awhile. pretend those bits are in italics then.

now I'm mad, EIII and I could have been Death Grips buddies

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 00:31 (eleven years ago) link

i don't see how it could be anything but a money thing; they're still doing the festivals right?

how u make money canceling shows?

the backlash to this stuff is kind of surprising, i guess confirms that people are used to and don't care about album delays, are way more pissed if you postpone shows they already bought tickets for/made plans around if there's not, like, some serious health issue or other inarguable explanation

some dude, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 15:39 (eleven years ago) link

it's funny that the album is called "No Love"

Number None, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link

how u make money canceling shows?

like someone said upthread, canceling a club tour and then re-booking it in larger venues maybe?

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

rising acts move sold out shows into bigger venues all the time, without outright cancellations or this kind of fanfare. that would be p weird imo. although this whole thing does seem weird in general.

some dude, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

is it possible that they booked the tour under old management & then when they signed to interscope they decided not to have them go out? i'm not sure if my timeline is off there tho

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:13 (eleven years ago) link

and by interscope i mean whichever major they signed to, i forget which it is

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

epic i think.
moving to a bigger venue would mean they would be getting more cash if it were a door split. If it were a straight up booking fee, they might cancel the whole tour because that's the only way they could contractually get out of doing several small shows. dunno.

agree that music fans in general get irritated at show cancellations, but another dimension here is death grips are coming up through the underground where project delays are common and frequent, but shows commitments are code-of-honor type stuff. as somebody who books and play shows, I can say that bands who cancel without good cause are viewed as flaky pains in the ass or cavalier primadonnas unconcerned with making other ppl's lives difficult. and this was an entire tour! whiney made the point above, you'd think a guy like zach hill would know better.

if they'd produced some kind of sincere apologetic message or rationale it'd be different but it was like "btw no shows, suck it". frankly, I was psyched to pick up their album the week it dropped but the way they handled this left a bitter taste in my mouth. still haven't bought it, tho I prolly will at some point.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

it's just hilarious cause like, you just dropped an album dude. nobody will mind if you don't drop another before January.

some dude, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 18:12 (eleven years ago) link

maybe they had conflicting label obligations - like maybe the label made them cancel?

sarahell, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:23 (eleven years ago) link

Why wouldn't you just say that then?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

because they work for the label?

catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 14 June 2012 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

working for the man, just like evrybody else

If our federal government can't stop leaks I seriously doubt LA Reid can.
