like Roy Hodgson?

"very unnecessary" used to bother me on the grounds of awkward redundancy, but then I decided that in context it may be deliberate awkward redundancy, so I let it go.

isn't it a Salt n Pepa album?
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 May 2012 18:13 (1 year ago) Permalink
'very unnecessary' not nearly as bad as 'pass undetectedly' from sweetest perfection.
― Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 21:04 (1 year ago) Permalink
yeah, i guess i have a problem with the phrasing in the chorus, so it's to do with the whole "very unnecessary" detail. seems a bit contrary to the flow of the song. it may be to do with Dave Gahan's voice which is quite hardened in tone, but when DM get verbose i always pick up on it in the intonation and notice the extra syllables.
― charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 21:53 (1 year ago) Permalink
Isn't the bigger problem that is words are very unnecessary, then why does the song have lyrics? btw that song is a perfect treasure

It is impossible for me to sing along with it without looking/sounding like an ass tho
― Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 22:05 (1 year ago) Permalink
i really like the lyrical idea in that song, but yeah it goes about saying it in quite a clunky way imo
― charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 22:13 (1 year ago) Permalink
anyway, i am enjoying the poll. it's been quite the black celebration celebration so far and i voted for 3 of the songs that have appeared from that album.
― charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 22:17 (1 year ago) Permalink
DM can be quite a ponderous band, but that's one of their charms.
― charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 22:22 (1 year ago) Permalink
it's no More than Words, for sure.

The only songs I really like from Ultra are the singles.
I do like "Useless" and "Home" a lot but I wouldn't have expected #1 votes for either

You know I have always been confused about "lay" v "lie" for getting on a bed verbs and that song is one of many that hasn't helped.

I was the #1 vote for "Photographic." Prefer the Some Bizzarre version, natch. Deffo too low, fools.
I cannot tolerate songs like "Somebody" - sappy ballads sung by MLG = zzzz. (This does not include "The Things You Said" which is awesome and was on my ballot.)

But Not Tonight: a song that rose tons in my estimation in recent years. It's an anthem that's ambiguous about that.

Halo has always seemed like one of the minor tracks on Violator to me, but Violator is so good that even its minor tracks are better than a lot of the rest of DM's catalogue.
