like Roy Hodgson?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 May 2012 17:00 (four years ago) Permalink

"very unnecessary" used to bother me on the grounds of awkward redundancy, but then I decided that in context it may be deliberate awkward redundancy, so I let it go.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 4 May 2012 17:26 (four years ago) Permalink

isn't it a Salt n Pepa album?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 May 2012 18:13 (four years ago) Permalink

'very unnecessary' not nearly as bad as 'pass undetectedly' from sweetest perfection.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 21:04 (four years ago) Permalink

yeah, i guess i have a problem with the phrasing in the chorus, so it's to do with the whole "very unnecessary" detail. seems a bit contrary to the flow of the song. it may be to do with Dave Gahan's voice which is quite hardened in tone, but when DM get verbose i always pick up on it in the intonation and notice the extra syllables.

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 21:53 (four years ago) Permalink

Isn't the bigger problem that is words are very unnecessary, then why does the song have lyrics? btw that song is a perfect treasure

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 22:04 (four years ago) Permalink

It is impossible for me to sing along with it without looking/sounding like an ass tho

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 22:05 (four years ago) Permalink

i really like the lyrical idea in that song, but yeah it goes about saying it in quite a clunky way imo

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 22:13 (four years ago) Permalink

anyway, i am enjoying the poll. it's been quite the black celebration celebration so far and i voted for 3 of the songs that have appeared from that album.

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 22:17 (four years ago) Permalink

DM can be quite a ponderous band, but that's one of their charms.

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 22:22 (four years ago) Permalink

it's no More than Words, for sure.

I don't think I realized people liked Ultra this much

Gore poodle!!

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 23:39 (four years ago) Permalink

The only songs I really like from Ultra are the singles.

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 23:39 (four years ago) Permalink

I do like "Useless" and "Home" a lot but I wouldn't have expected #1 votes for either

You know I have always been confused about "lay" v "lie" for getting on a bed verbs and that song is one of many that hasn't helped.

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 23:48 (four years ago) Permalink

I was the #1 vote for "Photographic." Prefer the Some Bizzarre version, natch. Deffo too low, fools.

I cannot tolerate songs like "Somebody" - sappy ballads sung by MLG = zzzz. (This does not include "The Things You Said" which is awesome and was on my ballot.)

Kent Burt, Friday, 4 May 2012 23:53 (four years ago) Permalink

this man does not sing this song

the next two both had the same number of points and votes and no #1 votes, so the tie was broken based on the ranking of the highest vote.

Wow, higher than I expected for Personal Jesus (wasn't actually sure it would even be here at all).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 5 May 2012 00:39 (four years ago) Permalink

But Not Tonight: a song that rose tons in my estimation in recent years. It's an anthem that's ambiguous about that.

Euler, Saturday, 5 May 2012 00:40 (four years ago) Permalink

"But Not Tonight" was my #1

lol I own that spring '93 Details magazine, remarkable for editor in chief William Shaw writing a story in which he accepts Dave Gahan's word that he's "changed" when Gahan had hit his nadir.

Halo has always seemed like one of the minor tracks on Violator to me, but Violator is so good that even its minor tracks are better than a lot of the rest of DM's catalogue.
