Freddie Hubbard - "Straight Life"

Red Clay is my favorite album on Earth tonight. To me, though, it's Herbie who steals the show. While everyone else is soloing, all I can hear is Herbie comping on the Rhodes (or, on one song, organ). Fantastic, perfect music. Can anyone recommend other stuff that Herbie did like this, in this sorta post-bop but pre-fusion setting?

Miles Davis - Filles de Kilamanjaro, Water Babies, ESP
Joe Henderson - Power to the People
Milt Jackson - Sunflower

He's on some other CTI dates too, I haven't heard all of them.

You know what's another dope Freddie Hubbard CTI tune btw -- Sky Dive

Thanks Hurting. The only one of those I know is Miles', and I've weirdly been listening to a lot of Henderson lately (mostly Inner Urge), and Bags Meets Wes is another all time fave, so these are both going on 'the list.'

One thing I wish is that they would cut the bass solos in half, and give the extra time to the trumpet.

^^^ shortened (or non-existent) bass solos are my wish on pretty much every jazz record ever (and I'm a bass player.)

A friend gave me his extra copy of Red Clay quite some time ago, and I have yet to play it; need to do that, it seems.

George Benson is also amazing on those Freddie Hubbard records.

My big complaint about CTI recordings actually is that they have too much swing on them. Swinging jazz sounds terrible the way Creed Taylor produced it. Every track should be proto-smooth-jazz, lite funk and ambient space jams.

would it be sacrilege to say i kinda like the live bonus track version of "red clay" on the CD reish more than the album version?

nine years pass...

The Benson solo about 2/3 of the way through the track "Straight Life" is Straight Fire.

Really like the record he did with Ilhan Mimaroglu. Much more nocturnal than anything on CTI. If anyone asked me what 'dark jazz' (a term I don't like but whatever) is, I'd recommend that.
