Most pre-Construction DM is all a haze to me, but Dreaming of You and Photographic are pretty good. Glad I finally got the motivation to check them out.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:26 (eleven years ago) link

'Photographic' was my #10. This track and indeed most of the Speak & Spell album remind me of being very little. My dad had Speak & Spell on vinyl, and I have a vivid early memory of running around the living room with my little sister to this track as the record crackled away in the background(!). When I got into my early teens and started getting to the age that I was beginning to listen to music a little more deeply, I fell totally into love with its pure synthpop sound.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:27 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, 'Love, In Itself' placed. I find that more surprising than 'Sea Of Sin' placing for some reason. I definitely think 'Here Is The House', for one, is a superior song.

"Love, In Itself" is great because it's one of those DM-just-discovered-samplers tracks

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:33 (eleven years ago) link

I've never really been too keen on the album/single versions of 'Useless'. I absolutely adore that Kruder & Dorfmeister session version, though!

Ah yeah, the little instrumental break... nice little snatch of piano in there as well!

I suppose 'Love, In Itself', like most of Construction Time Again does have an adventurous spirit to its production and this exciting sense of branching out and trying to move forward and do something different to what they'd done previously. It's down there as one of my least favourite '80s Depeche singles, though.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:42 (eleven years ago) link

Ah yes, and there it is! The one that Martin Gore famously sang in the studio with his dick hanging out!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:47 (eleven years ago) link

well, he supposedly recorded the vocals while completely naked. it'd be funnier if he had just sang it with his dick hanging out.

The three big 'Depeche explores the sampler' tracks for me are 'Pipeline' (of course!), 'People Are People' and possibly 'Stripped', where they set up the microphones to sample fireworks on Bonfire Night.

It's one of those famous Depeche Mode stories. When Martin Gore did his vocal track for 'Somebody', he was apparently completely naked. I don't think the rest of the band were watching though, I remember hearing that he did his vocal well out of the way in another room.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:53 (eleven years ago) link

x-post yeah but the charm of "Love, In Itself" is that it's before they reached the more mature approach they took with those tracks, instead being rather "press this key for guitar doodle-oodles"

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:54 (eleven years ago) link

I do agree with crut, though, it'd be a hell of a lot more funnier if it had literally just been his dick hanging out.

My #13. I've always loved hearing stories about the recording of 'People Are People'. The way they achieved that MASSIVE sound, by sending different sounds to loud PA systems in different rooms of the studio. So loud that apparently the building was shaking! People can say what they like about the lyrics, the track has a hell of a fucking kick to it. I like to listen to this track LOUD.

My #11. Far too strong to have been a mere B-side, and thankfully the band thought the same. I think that's Daniel Miller doing the 'over and done with, over and done with' bits in the intro.

also lol @ "Here Is The House" coming in at the bottom of the poll, considering it would have been the 21st song on my ballot ("The Things You Said" would have been 22)

so far I voted for:

"Sea of Sin"
"Precious"
"Somebody" (#1) (you fuckers)
"Fly on the Windscreen"

my biggest "wait, WAHT" is a tie between "Love, In Itself" (which I actually like a lot, I just think it's super goofy and not as good as many of their other songs) and "Sweetest Perfection" (which really is Violator's rough spot for me; I don't DISLIKE it but every other song on the album is just sooooooo much better)

I was one of the #1 votes for "Somebody," in deference to the number of mixtapes I put that song on in my teens and 20s. Still gets me.

"Love, in Itself" snuck into the lower reaches of my ballot (just above "A Question of Lust" actually). Always sounds like a Madonna song to me.

Fucking hell, I've been really busy lately and didn't even realize this poll was happening. Maybe it's just as well since I would have driven myself crazy trying to rank DM songs (except for "Enjoy the Silence" at #1).

Great results so far ... nice to see that "Sea of Sin" made it. "Precious", "Dreaming of Me", and "The Things You Said" are all too low. The first two I can understand, but I thought ILM worships "Music for the Masses"? I mean, "Sweetest Perfection" made the top 40, are we going to see every "Violator" track on here??

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 4 May 2012 06:20 (eleven years ago) link

Things You Said = way too low!

piscesx, Friday, 4 May 2012 07:54 (eleven years ago) link

<3 the things you said but it ended up being pushed down out of my 20. it's an affecting track but when i was listening to everything all over again i just thought it was a bit less musically gripping than the rest.

re: sea of sin, interesting that on first listen it doesn't grab me any more than their recent material, doesn't seem to have the violator touch of magic. is it me? is my love of violator & other early dm due to a time and place that for me is lost and gone forever?

sadface btw if the rest of the poll is run out during uk bedtime.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 09:21 (eleven years ago) link

Good start to the list. Thought Precious might be a bit higher, still I'm glad it made it.

Here is the House, Fly on the Windscreen and A Question of Lust are the three tracks I voted for from Black Celebration.

Wonder if Violator will be this poll's Innervisions having all its tracks place.

Surprised at Useless placing, it gives me hope that my number one will place which is from the same album.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 4 May 2012 09:49 (eleven years ago) link

Two more tracks from Ultra I'm really hoping will place.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 09:52 (eleven years ago) link

Me too. People Are People is the only one of mine to place so far. I had to tweak my ballot to bump it right up near the top - couldn't get it out my head for days, and realised I had it way too low when I found myself bellowing it out loud while walking round the shops.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 May 2012 10:00 (eleven years ago) link

Mine that have placed so far and the ranking I gave them:

15 - Dreaming of Me
19 - Love, In Itself
17 - Somebody
10 - People are People

wolf kabob (ENBB), Friday, 4 May 2012 10:37 (eleven years ago) link

Five of mine so far.
Useless - only for the K&D remix.
A Question of Lust - my favourite Martin Gore ballad - love "I need to drink more than you seem to think before I'm anyone's"
Photographic - my #4 - wonderfully harsh - on speaking terms with Warm Leatherette
Precious - the most persuasive of their 00s songs
Fly on the Windscreen - Squarely targeted at the depressive teenage me: "Death is everywhere"

There are songs that I didn't vote for that I look at on the results and I think 'yeah, I can definitely understand why it's in there, and I probably would have voted for it myself if I'd had the space'.

'Love, In Itself', 'Useless', 'Lie To Me', 'Get The Balance Right!' and 'But Not Tonight' = not worthy of a placing in a Top 40 Depeche tracks list, IMO.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 6 May 2012 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

Not only did I think "Enjoy" would sweep it, but "In Your Room" didn't even place? Maybe because it was a single (and one I love), I assumed it was a lock. Interesting results!

Listening to Construction Time Again as I type this - fantastically inventive sounds and arrangements but boy those lyrics are even worse than I remembered. So odd, DM's political awareness - lasted for just one year. It didn't suit them.

six years pass...
one year passes...

It turns out my wife had never seen "101," so we watched it tonight. I actually watch it every few years, and each time I'm elated by the end. Just a wonderful snapshot. So many great songs and performances. Love that it even gives a glimpse of mundane behind the scenes money stuff, something these movies rarely delve into.

It's odd, I've never considered myself a particularly big fan, but there is more stuff from this band that I love than there is from bands I love more. In fact, some of my happiest moments as a consumer (as gauche as that scans) were when those reissues came out, each sounding impeccable and each packaged with those absolutely illuminating documentaries. Helped me appreciate the band even more.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 30 November 2020 03:20 (three years ago) link

two years pass...

I hadn't heard all of Songs of Faith and Devotion til this year. The arrangement of the non-ballads slowly add and remove instrumental parts that are often so noisy they don't function as hooks when first heard. It doesn't cohere until the last minute or so of each song, when suddenly all of these noises and sounds are combined for a big finish, at which point the song lurches about like a beast composed from diverse monstrous parts, demanding astonishment!
Obviously a lot of this structure came about because they were trying to combine current electronics and the popular guitar sounds of the era.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:30 (seven months ago) link

I overlooked this album for a long time because I wanted more of it to be like "Walking in My Shoes" and "In Your Room", but pretty much every song on it is very good. "In Your Room" matches your description, I don't think it fully clicked with me until I'd heard the song a couple times and knew where it was going

Vinnie, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 23:15 (seven months ago) link

I don’t hate it but I feel it’s indirectly responsible for a lot of music I do hate (eg: nu metal with the on the red mastering, clipped beats, turntable scratches, distorted synth, ugly big guitars)
