I really can't go into details here, not for reasons of coyness but to avoid upsetting an old and dear friend, but everything that Chaki and Gear have been saying on this thread is 100% correct - if anything, they've avoided one of the most contemptible aspects of the whole sorry saga, trust me

Er, if you've interacted with a person for years and thought her to be trustworthy, and the find out that some or most of the stuff she's said has been a lie, plus that she's seriously fucked some other people up with her lies, I think it's quite understandable to be shocked, even if all this happened online. It's not like offline and online are two different worlds, where in the former you trust everyone and in the latter doubt everyone.

I'm kinda with tuomas on this one, actually. Of course you can't believe everything, but doubting everything seems unnecessarily cynical. In my experience, ilxors irl are much MORE pleasant than they are on the boards. And a lot of us have met friends and SO's here -- the inclination is to think of it as a relatively safe place. Which is why it's even more messed up when someone flagrantly violates that.
