Well, yeah I don't really iron a ton either.

otm re crappy padding. Nothing worse than getting a lovely criss-cross metal pattern in your nicely ironed shirt.

Ha, I was going to post that on the IA thread after ironing my interview shirt in a hotel!

kinder, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 19:10 (1 year ago) Permalink

it's the worst

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 19:23 (1 year ago) Permalink

I iron about twice a year, bf irons every morning and loves the rowenta but still curses having to iron!

tehresa, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 22:25 (1 year ago) Permalink

this will sound super nerdy but I always wanted one of those steam-cabinet things, that go on top of your dryer and you can put your folded shirts etc in

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 22:31 (1 year ago) Permalink

my parents had one. so cool.

surm, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

I would spring for a hard-core steamer if it meant I didn't have to store my winter woolens with mothballs.

My copy of "Home Comforts" (which is a thread in and of itself" is still packed because obviously I am a failure at housekeeping, but otherwise I would pull it to read the sections on ironing/steaming/moth-proofing/etc.

quincie, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:03 (1 year ago) Permalink

i think i need to buy that book.

surm, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

ultimate dream would be a Singer Steam Press. I had to work the press at the laundry and once I learned how to do that, it's like...pressing a shirt vs ironing was no contest. Doing a shirt in what, 4 passes, vs fiddling around with an iron? pfft.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:10 (1 year ago) Permalink

my mother worked at a drycleaner for many years. i've been meaning to ask her about that.

surm, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:13 (1 year ago) Permalink

I still get weird flashbacks just from the smell of a drycleaners

ask her about the magic chemicals that make blood/rust/stains disappear
that was my favorite thing ever

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

worst = ppl who would send in their laundry for fluff/fold and would include their *underwear*
skeev attack x 1000

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

Ew ew ew!

Home Comforts is a great book

ppl who would send in their laundry for fluff/fold

Wait, wha? As in, already clean laundry, they just want someone to FOLD it for them, WTF?

fix it with like some music glue (Trayce), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:34 (1 year ago) Permalink

nah sorry I just meant domestic laundry

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:38 (1 year ago) Permalink

so any drycleaner can both wash or dryclean, right?

is it acceptable to ask for specific garments to be hand-ironed?

surm, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:44 (1 year ago) Permalink

Totally, assuming they offer it. We had an iron handy for delicate items.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

I cant think of the last time I ironed anything, I am a savage.

fix it with like some music glue (Trayce), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

(tbf because of this I basically never wear cotton or linen items, just stretch materials and woolens.)

hilarious/awesome

but i couldn't imagine my life without cotton

i really like, depend on it

so there was this odor in my office at home. i swear it had been there for like 2.5 years. i finally found the source, and scrubbed and scrubbed -- and walking into my office this morning in the sunlight was so lovely. i could finally breathe again!

surm, Friday, 11 May 2012 14:36 (1 year ago) Permalink

Don't keep us in suspense: WHAT WAS IT?

Right when I walk into my bedroom there's this tiny whiff of the sickly sweetness that is decomposing flesh. I just started noticing it a couple of days ago, but can't find the source. I fear a mouse death under the floor or in a wall or something. It's not getting any WORSE, so hopefully it just mummifies away quickly.

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Friday, 11 May 2012 14:39 (1 year ago) Permalink

it's kind of embarrassing, but i think my cat relieved herself in a corner of the office once when we accidentally trapped her in there. i'm pretty sure that's what it was. and i just kept thinking to myself "it's probably one of those plants" (because my office window overlooks the neighbors' deck). took a whole lot of lysol to make things better.

surm, Friday, 11 May 2012 14:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

anyhow, you can imagine my relief.

1 month passes...

so what is with these rust stains on my fridge? never had much of a problem w/r/t my fridge door before but i got a cleaning lady to clean the apt and after she left, the white fridge door gradually became covered with rust stains. cleaned it once (took everything out of me, i have to tell you -- they were some stubborn stains!), and they came back. did it again with comet and it seems better, but i think it is slowly reappearing. wtf?

surm, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 20:36 (11 months ago) Permalink

Something in the cleaning or scrubbing ate through the paint, is my guess, and the humidity in the air is causing rust around the little pin-hole holes in the finish. Mine is doing the same thing. I'm not sure what to do about it yet.

1 month passes...

I'm cleaning so hard in anticipation of a guest who is coming over tomorrow that I appear to have broken a sweat. This is unacceptable.

mostly re hanging them up

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:57 (9 months ago) Permalink

that's really funny that you say that!! because my current problem is that the wire hangers the dry cleaners use left marks on some of my garments :/

surm, Friday, 24 August 2012 22:08 (9 months ago) Permalink

like actual marks or indentations? erg

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 August 2012 22:21 (9 months ago) Permalink

this reboot inspired me to hang up some clothes btw!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 August 2012 22:22 (9 months ago) Permalink

just like a slight discoloration from being on that cardboard part for too long? (i went a really long time without picking up my drycleaning)

you think it'll come out in the wash?

surm, Friday, 24 August 2012 22:23 (9 months ago) Permalink

the washer at my new place has stripped the black from my shirts/jeans. so grey. :(

This is my big clean cleaning up / getting rid of stuff weekend

What do y'all think of those o-cell-o sponges with the k-ra-zy patterns? I've been getting the fabric encapsulated sponges with a scrubby side and a soft side recently.

surm, Friday, 24 August 2012 22:38 (9 months ago) Permalink

Our flat is on the market so we permanently have to have it looking completely neat and tidy - it's killing me. Our kitchen bin is shut away in a cupboard along with loads of other junk, and all the stuff I'd normally have out on the kitchen countertop has been put in random cupboards by my o/h so I can never find anything. Bed made and no clothes out and keep on top of the laundry pile.

kinder, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:09 (9 months ago) Permalink

Hate doing laundry, especially cotton shirts. Supposedly they iron themselves in the dryer but I have yet to find a dryer hot enough to do that. Giving up on that.

*tera, Saturday, 25 August 2012 00:02 (8 months ago) Permalink

omg i meant to respond to this days ago, my internet at home has been fucked

i am glad i helped you out robyn!

yeah and the thing about dryers is that they get out the wrinkles but too hot makes stuff shrink! and i look TERRIBLE in tight tshirts

kinder my sister in law is dealing with the same thing right now and she is going batty

surm, Thursday, 30 August 2012 18:51 (8 months ago) Permalink

I just fixed ALL the leaking faucets in this house (replacing seat washers and stem washers in 6 old compression faucets) and am having a damn proud plumbing moment!
