well she's an art-history girl and he's an artist she admires, right? (i hope i'm not stereotyping by calling her an art-history girl.)
xxp i think that is what the show is saying, yes. it's just that marnie seems generally disdainful of horrible men so that moment is jarring.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link
anyway, this show is fun enough for me. she can kinda go anywhere with it. that's the fun part.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah maybe Marnie is turned on by any sort of aggressive talk even if it's from a douchebag, since her boyfriend is so even-handed and nice. Like sex with dude who thinks he's in charge would be a great break from a dude who is probably asking "is that ok for you? do you like this?"

― L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:53 (eleven years ago) link
yeah wait until she finds out sex with everyone is pretty mediocre
― mh, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link
well she was telling the boyfriend to be a man in the other episode.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link
i mean she says as much in the second episode, again i dont think the character motivations are unclear, it all "makes sense," i just think that its a weird way for the scene to be played given the way the series has (so far) treated sex
― max, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link
lol @ "be a man"
I guess that still sounds sexier than "have some self-confidence," though.
― mh, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link
she fantasizes about men with self-confidence, max. nothing weird there.
― mh, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link
I'm relieved to see people here (and Dunham) shooting down the efficacy of Jorma's sex talk. The way that line played out in the show (combined with all of the 'voice of a generation' stuff) had me worried that shit like that was secretly A Thing That Works. It was despair-worthy.
― Vaginal Meshes Of The Afternoon (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:10 (eleven years ago) link
wtf is Jorma, are you using some obscure actor dude's name, I am confuse

loled at 'The Craft' - 'American History X' exchange
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link
"american history x" was weak, but "you look like you're going to get revenge on some popular girls" was legit. sad sack boyfriend thoroughly zung hannah in that exchange with the, "go tweet that" response, too.

I was really on the fence with this show, but this last episode won me over. I do, however, still think Hannah's fuckbuddy is the most repellent human being ever.

for some reason I thought that guy really came into his own this episode
SLOW YOUR ROLL
― mh, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link
I suspect that he's being painted monstrously to stop contenderisers turning it into "But has anyone considered his rich inner life? Think how he feels, negotiating his terrifying sexual freedom, bound by the expectations of modern life on a young man, with no pole star to guide him except a bunch of gonzo porn and the mask of not caring about anything".
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link
well, i mean they've done enough with him to reveal that he does have a sort of sweet and charming side of his personality, at least enough to sort of justify why Hannah puts up with him. but man, when he is awful, its just really off-putting.

Yeah, this kind of lost me with the girl beelining to the nearest private room to rub one out cuz she was so turned on by the ridiculous art douche saying he’s such a MAN he will terrify her with his fucking skills. Also, the eyeroll-y “sometimes ya just gotta DANCE away the pain girlfrand” ending. Second episode was funny though. I like the goofy fuckbuddy character more than most. Mamet’s daughter’s character exists right now as a joke only, but I think she does a great job with it and is funny so I don’t care. British girl is zzzzz.

― Evan, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 18:43 (eleven years ago) link
Or not do you have it, but can you log in I should say.
Yeah, but...there's something about this that bothers me. I feel like some aspects of this show might largely be super OTM in a really trivial way. Like, yeah, I can relate to that scene for sure...but the moments it evokes/recalls aren't particular noteworthy or profound. I mean, fair enough, tiny moments are worthy of consideration and transcription, but it feels a little like watching commercials for '80s toys and the comforting-yet-vacuous "Ooooh, I had that!" phenomenon or something.
