re England, I think he'd do slightly better if he had the players every week; but training once every couple of months, or whatever, I can't see what he can bring to it.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

the statement says he's the only manager that's been approached

Yet.

Why would the FA only approach one manager, even given they've had headhunters doing the initial selection? It doesn't make sense.

The only rationale I can think behind it is that the other contenders would cost more, in terms of wages and getting them out of their contracts, than the FA are prepared to pay.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:09 (1 year ago) Permalink

ok, he's obviously a bright chap, but jesus the shite he came out with at liverpool was just incredible. i can forgive the football, we knew what were getting when he got the job, i blame purslow for that. but shifting responsibility, claiming he can't work harder, slagging off the fans and his players in public, and spreading lies about the man he replaced? no thanks.

Chris, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:10 (1 year ago) Permalink

there are probably a lot of clever football managers but most seem intellectually incurious

the only times i can ever remember mourinho alluding to the lived world beyond football were when he mocked abramovich for 'shopping at waitrose' for discount players like tal ben haim, and when he said there were many famous theatres in catalonia (a clunkily spiteful reference to lionel messi's playacting)

Ms Tum-Bla-Wi-Tee (nakhchivan), Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:11 (1 year ago) Permalink

Maybe 'arry let it be known he didn't want the job? By doing it publicly it would make any appointment look like second choice. Still, lets wait and see.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:12 (1 year ago) Permalink

Bernstein said: "Roy is the only manager we have approached and we remain on course to make an appointment within the timescale we set out.

"Further conversations will now take place with Roy."

he probably can't work harder
he probably works a lot harder than I do, and harder than most footballers do
he is in his 60s anyway

re world beyond footy, Fergie ought to be able to refer to Govan shipyards but doesn't

I guess none of us know the truth yet re whether RH is really likely to get the job. Maybe he wouldn't even accept it if offered.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:14 (1 year ago) Permalink

he probably works a lot harder than a lot of people who, like me, sometimes post to www messageboards do

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:15 (1 year ago) Permalink

btw I get the impression Redknapp works hard too
he gets up at 5 every day anyway to drive to work

I think most managers work very hard and I think a lot of players don't

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

I can't actually think of any manager who seems lazy.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

I think Hodgson is a bit too frank for the England job really. He'll do something like claim England probably won't win the next World Cup and The Sun will go apoplectic. Also The Sun can usually be relied upon to get butthurt if they don't get their man in.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:20 (1 year ago) Permalink

I suppose he'd get a ton of cash from it including a payoff when fired, all of which he could pass on to his children. That might be reason enough to do it.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:22 (1 year ago) Permalink

i'm sure he didn't twiddle his thumbs all day, but don't tell us you can't work harder, and certainly don't tell us that you can't work better, because i don't think he did near as well as he should have done with his 35 years of experience. he does seem like a decent enough guy i suppose, but god we saw the absolute worst of him, there's no doubt about that.

Chris, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:24 (1 year ago) Permalink

England is like Liverpool plus, is my fear for him. At least the FA, by letting Harry fuck up his season first, have (probably) managed to avoid hobbling Roy from day one.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:28 (1 year ago) Permalink

curiously Redknapp has been talking this week about building the future at Tottenham ... could conceivably connect with idea that he has quietly turned England down

but of course we all know that Spurs form has been terrible anyway and queered a pitch or two

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

I mean, one can just about conceive Redknapp not going to England, and getting replaced at Tottenham too
(not really, but a bit)

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

I don't think it's a question of Redknapp turning down the England job, it's the FA turning down Redknapp. I heard a month ago that 3 out of the four-man committee didn't want him.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

more now:

No approach has been made to Tottenham's manager, Harry Redknapp, who had been viewed as the favourite to succeed Fabio Capello.

Hodgson is out of contract in the summer, meaning the FA would not have to pay any costly compensation or become involved in any wrangling with the club.

That is in contrast to the situation at Spurs, who would expect hefty compensation were the FA to approach them about Redknapp.

Hodgson has coached the Switzerland and Finland national teams with considerable success in the past. He has also been successful on limited resources at West Brom, for whom he signed an 18-month contract last February after a disappointing spell at Liverpool.

West Brom said in a statement: "The club are currently in negotiations with Roy about a new contract – his current deal ends on June 30 – and remain very keen to bring these talks to a successful conclusion.

"However, Roy has expressed a desire to explore this opportunity and, accordingly, the club have granted him permission to speak to the FA."

Peace added: "Roy has done a fantastic job over the past 15 months and the fact the FA want to discuss the England role with him is testament to that.

"Roy is a proud Englishman and we can understand why he wants to speak to the FA about this highly-prestigious managerial position.

"However, we have emphasised to Roy how much we would like him to remain as our head coach and continue his major contribution to our project at the Hawthorns as we look to establish ourselves as a Barclays Premier League club.

"Everyone here has an excellent working relationship with him and he is immensely popular with our supporters."

It is kind of damning that we have to wait for your appointment before any of the nation's qualified coaches can stop their groups of kids from playing elevens and move to fives or sevens instead.

HR is always said to have 'media support' but I think RH has had some too

Paul Hayward, now back at Telegraph, is close to him I think

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 19:57 (1 year ago) Permalink

i'd imagine it's cuz he tries to be helpful and in even though he isn't good at prepackaged slogans and cant ('mind games' as they're now called) he will deliver lengthy and thorough answers

wenger is like this too -- he still suffers the odd bit of tabloid boorishness during periodic lows, but he is generally genial and forthcoming at press conferences and hacks appreciate it

realizing that something I like about all this is

that the FA are not just following an agenda set for them by 'media narratives'
or doing what seems line of least resistance (well, OK, RH is cheaper)
but making their own minds up and blithely ignoring assumptions that every journo has treated as certainties

deep into the counterfactual rabbit hole here, but if tottenham had continued their pre-springtime form then i expect redknapp would have been thrust into the job on a tsunami of tabloid hype

Ms Tum-Bla-Wi-Tee (nakhchivan), Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

the totenham slump has merely given the FA some ~pausa~ as guardiola would say, and they have looked around and elected for the humble itinerant rather than the flashy barrow boy

Ms Tum-Bla-Wi-Tee (nakhchivan), Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:02 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'm actually a bit annoyed about this as I kinda want Redknapp gone now.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:06 (1 year ago) Permalink

If we finish sixth there may be a chance of that, i suppose. It's receding, though.

If England have a horrible tournament, it's entirely possible that the Redknapp bandwagon will start rolling again near the start of next season. Might be safer to kick him out now.

lfc hatchet job on hodgson is so unfair and so tiresome chris.

hodgson gave it straight even when the fans didn't want to hear it, rafa and dalglish have played to that gallery to the detriment of the club on many occasions. refusing to feed the persecution complex when the real problems at the club were bequeathed him by the previous manager and the same ownership issues that so excused benitez.

Football under hodgson wasn't any worse than latter benitez, results not much different from then through dalglish, this is all just blatantly driven by hodgon's disinclination to pander to the YNWA hardcore. Orwell would have a field day.

diafiyhm (darraghmac), Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:53 (1 year ago) Permalink

hodgson's results were worse than benitez's. about the same as dalglish's.

MotD2:

1. sucking up to Pulis and Stoke with lamentable 'irony'

2. all the 'football people' saying 'I was sure it was gonna be Arry'. Being 'in the game' doesn't seem to have given them much superior insight.

Pulis says 'EVERYBODY wanted it to be Harry - fans, media, everybody' -- how many fans has he talked to?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:57 (1 year ago) Permalink

whether it does or doesn't play well with morons doesn't change that i admire hodgson's refusal to play the cheap game.

diafiyhm (darraghmac), Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

not a scouser or LFC fan so I don't comment on RH at LFC but I think it's a pity if that brief period at LFC is viewed as main thing about RH's career -- though, OK, they are the biggest job he has done, save possibly Inter.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 April 2012 22:01 (1 year ago) Permalink

as an outsider, I didn't have any problem at all with Hodgson's stoical statements during the LFC period
LFC fans seemed to, though.

I don't identify with the vitriol because, strange to say, I am not vitriolic about eg Ramos, Graham, Francis, Christian Gross. I kind of like every Tottenham manager, for being Tottenham manager - see them as one of us, to a degree.

Very funny, I agree...or is it?

If you think of it in the broader context, this is another dig by the FA at Liverpool FC, a figurative slap in the face and a clear indication of the prejudice we (the club) were up against during the Evra FArce...'how dare we sack a nice Establishment man like Roy?!...those Scousers, they're absolute scallies, a disgrace to English football and need to be taught a lesson at the earliest opportunity!'.

Which didn't take too long in coming....
