i like the video.

i LOVE the video. and the album would be a solid 4/5, i think, if you trimmed down the length by eliminating some of the sillier songs.

It's cos all our artsy parents all watched that shit, then either found that VHS box at a thrift store or got into it when it came out on DVD. Also, the Netflix streaming of last year has led a bunch of kids to discover it.

i was disappointed by the david lynch album
"dark night of the soul" was a great track, but turns out i didn't want a whole album of it
― Choc. Clusterman (contenderizer), Saturday, 28 April 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link
I do think alot of the time Lynchian is trotted out rather lazily as shorthand hip nostalgia reference. Much of the music I've heard that was described as Lynchian is yeah by people that like him and yeah has reverb and tremelo but really falls short of the playfulness, the humor, and the sublime beauty in Badalamenti's scores.
Not that you shouldn't be able to interpret cultural touchstones like TP in whatever way you want, but it sort of bugs me how superficial these references are. For instance the only way I would tie Lana Del Rey into David Lynch's work is if she ended up wrapped in plastic.
Sorry to be all "You gotta MEAN it, man" on this. I just feel like it's selling him a bit short.

much as i have undying love for this man i learned to steer clear of his non-film projects by the time of the angriest dog in the world

every interview he's ever given on the subject of meditation is a hoot and a half though so i'm kinda curious about the book
― jesus christ (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 28 April 2012 16:34 (eleven years ago) link
If you've seen more than half an hours worth of interview footage, then you basically read the book.

i know laughter is not the intention but there's something inherently lol about him saying "infinite bliss consciousness" in his barney fife voice

If you delete a couple of the clunkers in the middle this was actually a pretty enjoyable album all in all. Although I've not really felt the need to go back to it.

Great article Whiney! Don't be shy about posting links to your stuff.
Where does Lykke Li fit into this whole David Lynch/haunted girl group thing? I feel like her last album had a lot in common with the Cults one.

Blouse and Nite Jewel were both new to me and I'm liking them a lot. Frankie Rose was already one of my favorites of the year. Didn't really realize how much this sound was a thing right now, but it hits a lot of my buttons.

It gets pretty samey but I like the Lykke Li song and The Ballad of Hollis Brown. He should do a covers album.

1st one was pretty respectable old dude art-pop, very 90s trip hop vibes with the eddyish guitars and creeping drums. Inessential but much better than expected. May check out the new one if I run out of better offers.
