Luongo willing to waive no-trade clause

"I've always been about the team first, and obviously they got a guy (Cory Schneider) here who is going to be a superstar in this league the next 10, 12, 15 years," Luongo said.

If I pointed out that Joel Ward, a Black man, scored winning goal on TIM THOMAS in BOSTON, people might think I'm inferring a thing or two.

Zirin's column on Ward and Thomas and Boston racism.

Old Boston is also part of this story, as much as many from New England don’t want to hear it. No city in the United States has a more tortured intersection of race and sports than our supposed cradle of liberalism and democracy. It’s the city whose Boston Red Sox were the last team to integrate, waiting until 1959 twelve years after Jackie Robinson broke through with the Brooklyn Dodgers. It’s the city that for decades rejected the greatest team basketball player in history, Bill Russell, because of his proud, unblinking opposition to racial intolerance. After dealing with years of everything from verbal abuse to the vandalizing of his home, Russell called the city “a flea market of racism.” Boston then embraced Larry Bird, to such a passionate degree his very jersey became a symbol of white arrogance, exemplified in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. It’s also paradoxically, (and fitting in a city this paradoxical) the first hockey town to integrate, when Willie O’Ree took the ice for the Bruins in 1958 (he would be the NHL’s last Black player for 16 years). Now, when Joel Ward plays the hero, the reflex is the “N” bomb. As Faulkner said, “The past is not dead. It isn’t even past.”

Waterloo? Oh, we've sunsetted that. (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 26 April 2012 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

Its awesome that the guy scored on Tim Thomas. Poetic justice.

Ugly stuff indeed, but it isn't just Boston - witness Wayne Simmonds and the banana incident last year in London Ontario (a town I'm otherwise quite fond of)

rip alfie

i dunno; he's had a splendid career but i pretty much lost respect for him when he fired a slapshot at niedermeyer after the horn in the '07 finals

good game tho; now we've got rangers-caps. kinda wanted to see rangers-flyers, but i've a feeling we might ultimately get that anyway

daniel 'danny' brière and claude giroux both have seven goals in seven playoff games

all these series look great except maybe rangers-caps, in which first goal wins

i've got a hockey question. i'm a total hockey newb (i watch a playoff game every year or so - generally when flyers are in them) but this year i've really been enjoying it - i think partially bc exciting flyer team and that hbo hockey show and the playoffs have been kinda riveting to me. so apologies for barging in. i was just wondering about shots on goal and saves. obv a team that takes a lot of shots is going to actually score more often than a team that takes less. when a team has a lot of shots on goal, but fewer points than you would expect, what would that generally indicate? a team that has a hard time closing? or that they were playing a particularly better goalie?

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

fewer points goals

could be a really good goalie, but there are shots and shots. flipping a puck on goal from center ice is not as dangerous as a point-blank shot from the slot. that sort of stuff evens out over the long term -- the fact that quick and lundqvist have awesome save percentages isn't an illusion -- but in a single game might not mean much.

you can see the difference in the shot percentages of forwards and defensemen -- a top forward will score on maybe 15% of his shots while a top defenseman is maybe half that.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:27 (eleven years ago) link

thx, that makes sense. btw, i love in this NJ/PHI game that when flyers have had power plays they've been executing these really tight passing formations. kinda reminds me of a pass-heavy basketball team.

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:37 (eleven years ago) link

flyers are playing really well and are an appealing team, which is hard for me as a pittsburgh fan. but yeah if you want to get into hockey this is a v. good time to do it.
