y'all are underrating weezy on "strobe lights", that might get my vote

i told her i would love her
love her as forever

I have never underrated weezy on strobe lights

dayo, Monday, 23 April 2012 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

the strobe lights are dancing
we've taken all the chances
she question what we are
and i'll drink to the answer

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 April 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

yeah dayo you're the only one

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 April 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

i mean i totally subscribe to the theory that every element of the album contributes to the whole and wouldn't want to change a thing -- BUT if i was going to delete anyone from the record it'd totally be Wayne

yeah no i do think we're p much on the same page here generally but just for me weezy's presence on the album was vital in kinda idk, emulsifying the cocky/dreamy "hate you but i love you but i hate you" motherfuckers that's stoned patient aspect that i think would otherwise have got a little lost just with diddy carrying it. obviously subsequent releases in the ddm canon have further gone some ways towards internalizing the whole aesthetic so that perhaps now weezy doesnt quite seem as necessary, but at the time (and still in terms of lltp as a standalone piece) he was pertinent

also i say weezy's 'presence' rather than contribution specifically - i would suggest it's important to note all guests on the album have their characters sublimated into the lttp vibe, almost like they're mutliplicites of a single conflicted self rather than discrete entities cosigning the main body. like i might have first said ross was eminently the least essential person on this but even he works as a sort of texture of in-the-here-and-now brash celebrity unaware of the diddy/biggie melancholies to come

these are not the lines i would choose to type out to sell wayne on "strobe lights" to sceptics (though i do like his turn on it)

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Monday, 23 April 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

lil wayne's attitude on 'strobe lights' is like someone pulling the wings off of a fly

dayo, Monday, 23 April 2012 21:54 (eleven years ago) link

pretty devastating imo

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 April 2012 21:54 (eleven years ago) link

really fits into the dark, doubtful middle third of the album

dayo, Monday, 23 April 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

love hypothetical polls btw, dudes should fail to realise them more often

r|t|c, Monday, 23 April 2012 21:56 (eleven years ago) link

i would suggest it's important to note all guests on the album have their characters sublimated into the lttp vibe, almost like they're mutliplicites of a single conflicted self rather than discrete entities cosigning the main body

this is so crucial yeah! but the best ones are also entirely recognisable as themselves, or at least they're basically still doing what they normally do, so it's not just straightforward self-anonymising in service of diddy, it's kind of...almost like the other way round, an extension of the sade love (and how diddy quotes those songs diddy on "coming home"). it's him identifying with what wayne, justin etc do and using them as mouthpieces.

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Monday, 23 April 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

We should also have a "best guest appearance on a version of a LTTP song that didn't make the album" failed poll.

e.g. Nicki vs Cassie vs Serani vs ??

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link
