FWIW I was thinking of nominating the Stuart Price extended version of Madonna's Hung Up, but it's not on YouTube and I can't remember exactly how it goes. But anything which there's an equivalent to an "Extended Club Mix" is fair game tbh.

That Stuart Price Remix of Hung Up

which I really loved at the time, but totally forgot about and as I seem to recall dancing to it a number of times at Optimo

Madonna - Hung Up (Stuart Price Extended Remix Dub)*

*how I have it named for whatever reason in my itunes

i like that song a lot but likely will not vote for it

perhaps would vote for his coldplay remix though, that was pretty epic

the late great, Monday, 23 April 2012 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

"talk" remix, not "viva la vida"

the late great, Monday, 23 April 2012 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

For your consideration beatportals top 30 club tracks of the decade. Some good choices that havent been nommed so far:

Price's "Mr. Brightside" remix is my favourite of his. Already been nominated though. It would be hard to just vote for one. He was pretty prolific for a while there.

i think the only one on that beatport list i'd nominate is

andré kraml - safari (james holden mix)

(shades of jae is actually from 1999)

the late great, Monday, 23 April 2012 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

well, i might nominate "bay of figs" and "the terrace" and maybe a couple of others but they are already on our list

the late great, Monday, 23 April 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

kind of surprised switch's "this is sick" made it in, props, otherwisezzzzzzzzz

fauxmarc, Monday, 23 April 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

Hmm, definitely plenty of memories in that list, but it's amazing how dated most of them sound now, and I've heard them all far too many times.

'This is Sick' sounds pretty fresh I'll agree.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 23 April 2012 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

"this is sick" - like most fidget house - wears on me badly these days

would have nominated his mix of the pack's "vans" if he had actually released it (not really but love that track)

the late great, Monday, 23 April 2012 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

I would like to nominate the following and be laughed at by Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr thx

Adam Beyer - Ignition Key (Speedy J remix)
$tinkworx - Coelacanth
Luke Vibert - I Love Acid
Chasing Voices - Acidbathory
Motiivi: Tuntematon - Mankind Failed

(yeah this is a weird list but most things I thought of were already nominated so)

instant coffee happening between us (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 23 April 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

(shades of jae is actually from 1999)

this was the first of many tracks I wanted to nom only to check the original release date and be disappointed.

Tim F, Monday, 23 April 2012 22:51 (twelve years ago) link

somebody - maybe pipecock or mike taylor / disco nihilist - once said that shades of jae was one of the only songs they'd ever seen where people would come running onto the dancefloor from other rooms when they'd hear it start up

believe that

the late great, Monday, 23 April 2012 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah totally.

It helps of course that "hear it start up" is basically what the entire song feels like.

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 00:29 (twelve years ago) link

uh, is there anything else in this genre that sounds like moodymann?

just listened to "shades of jae", "forevernevermore" and "j.a.n." and uh...

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:21 (twelve years ago) link

the joke is just that there is a ton of stuff that sounds/tries to sound like moodymann, and there is even someone who goes by the moniker moodymanc

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:17 (twelve years ago) link

oh wait, i just realized you said "igi", rather than "idgi"

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:44 (twelve years ago) link

thx for the kenny dixon tip

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:45 (twelve years ago) link

Srsly though:

- firstly, check out Moodymann albums - A Silent Introduction and Black Mahogani being most key, then Mahogany Brown and Forevernevermore.

- Theo Parrish is not exactly like Moodymann but they're mentioned in the same breath for a reason; their styles complement one another. Get Parallel Dimensions first and foremost, then First Floor. For a third pic I would go with the Rotating Assembly album.

- Norma Jean Bell is a saxophonist/producer who worked a lot with Moodymann, and her album Come Into My Room is (to be reductionist) basically Moodymann with added sax.

- Andres is another Moodymann protege and his self-titled album is like a short, focused Moodymann album which I probably listen to more than any Moodymann other than ASI and BM.

- Trus'me is basically a Moodymann clone but that doesn't change the fact that his debut Working Nights is about on a level with ASI and BM (in my opinion).

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:59 (twelve years ago) link

Wow that's a huge statement (re: trusme). Dunno though, never got the urge to listen to it. I remember one ace track from it though

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 08:56 (twelve years ago) link

Make that behind ASI and BM, but ahead of FNM and MB (and other Moodymann albums).

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 09:37 (twelve years ago) link

new andres is good

best moodymann is this http://www.discogs.com/Kenny-Dixon-Jr-Soul-Sounds/release/4289

Almost forgot… Kavinsky - Nightcall

And I have been called "The Appetite" (DL), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 11:08 (twelve years ago) link

Kenny Dixon is Moodymann it needs to be said.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 11:29 (twelve years ago) link

Kavinsky - Nightcall

electro pop / synth pop, sorry..

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 13:06 (twelve years ago) link

also check this out, its like a detroit supergroup thing with kdj, theo parrish, rick wilhite, etc. surprisingly great and cohesive for how many people were working on it.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 April 2012 13:41 (twelve years ago) link

i agree that silentintroduction is the best

but i would rank mahogany brown as my second - its so murky, dusty and funky. i think it also has the widest emotional range and the most sui generis tracks

after that it's black mahogany and forevernevermore. i think silence in the secret garden is kinda weak

the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 13:59 (twelve years ago) link

contenderizer if you wanna hear other ppl using vocal samples of moodymann/kenny dixon talking, listen to these:

alena – turn it around (hard house banton remix)
mala – forgive
mala - alicia
dj ng ft. katy b – as i
basement jaxx – breakaway
x5 dubs ft. teresa - i wish
n10-tainment ft. ruth - i pray
hyetal – phoenix
mario basanov – up
drake ft. alicia keys – fireworks (deadboy's tearjerking slo-mo house remix)
royal p – like that
photonz - xabregas
t2 ft. h boogie – better off as friends (remix)

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

I love all of those! Except I have already nominated "As I" I think.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 23:37 (twelve years ago) link

Oh wait maybe you meant "Tell Me"?

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 23:38 (twelve years ago) link

If the nomination deadline is April 30 when are ballots going to be due? I ask because I'll be travelling from April 30 to May 12 and want to earn my ivotedtoday.jpg

EDB, Thursday, 26 April 2012 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

may 1st is the nomination deadline, definitely at least 2 weeks for the voting window if not longer

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

probably take us a week to narrow down the nominations list and let everyone debate about the knife and whatnot

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 00:14 (twelve years ago) link

wow can't wait.

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 02:09 (twelve years ago) link

can we get pipecock back to morbs up the results thread?

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 26 April 2012 02:57 (twelve years ago) link

oh i'm sure we don't need ol' tommy neckbeard back for that to happen

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:23 (twelve years ago) link

thanks for all the moodyman recs, folks. silentintroduction is amazing, but i'm starting to think i need to track down the original 12" versions. a lot of the tracks i liked best when first exploring seem to be uncollected in their original form.

i'm sort of amazed that this dude isn't held up by mainstream music people as one of the greats of the last couple decades (in the way that like daft punk and radiohead are). these are some of the best sounds of any kind i've heard in a long, long while.

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:30 (twelve years ago) link

Excepting maybe Derrick May and Juan Atkins he's as heralded as it's possible to be for a dance producer who has never had any kind of populist success and doesn't actually hold any appeal from a pop/rock perspective.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:40 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i know. no hits, no mainstream visibility. still surprised, cuz this stuff seems very accessible to me.

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:48 (twelve years ago) link

tons of access points for curious newcomers: distinctive sound (even 10-20 years down the road), memorable compositions, emotionally direct & compelling music, lots of sonic variety, hard to pigeonhole, influential figure, interesting politics & personality, iconoclastic, fascinating human story

dude really needs & deserves a serious career overview. hell, i want one just for selfish reasons. maybe he doesn't want people to hear his music that way, i dunno...

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 05:02 (twelve years ago) link

this is going to be impossible and I dont think anyone will agree on the final results.

Moka, Thursday, 26 April 2012 08:05 (twelve years ago) link

unlike other ILM polls where everyone is complacent and in mutual agreement on every placing
