Oh I see, it's a Pows comp. Ha ha, it's sweet how much Liz and Lance love the Pows.
The main songwriter from that band, Zach (also of HEATER), is living in Vermont on going to Carpentry school.
He hasn't given up on rock, but who knows when or how he'll make his next move.
I think the record Permanent is releasing is the very first Pows session from when Rex and Zach were maybe 15.

xp I knew you weren't really mad, Tyler.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

The project I was referring to previously was a comp of a bunch of area bands that would have featured the (extremely rough) demo recordings of MOST HIGH, the best band that I was ever in, which feature Dan and Jeremy (now of Cave) and a dude named Drew who lives in Portland now and plays in a group called Loose Values.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

I don't have any info. Wish I did!

the last permanent records email had a long description of it - i'll ilx-mail it to you!

or actually, just check it out here: http://www.permanentrecordschicago.com/news.php

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 20 April 2012 17:47 (eleven years ago) link

Cool, thanks, Z_

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

i never even saw the pows play, i only saw the cover show that lance + liz did in Maude Vintage that one time in como

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 20 April 2012 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

Man, they really were good. They were just kids.
That description is kind of cryptic in that Lance never says what is actually on it.
I guess it's probably selections from both Pows records, maybe some Saber Tooth, maybe something from that first recording session?
Curious.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

does lance write those descriptions, or liz? liz wrote me an incredible letter of recommendation to help get me into grad school. i'll always owe her big time for that?

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 20 April 2012 17:55 (eleven years ago) link

sorry, that was supposed to be a period, not a question.

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 20 April 2012 17:55 (eleven years ago) link

Well, it says "Liz and I learned all the songs on their first album and ..." so Lance definitely wrote that one.
I am sure Liz writes stuff, too. They are amazing people and it is super encouraging to see how successful they've become.
I mean, who would have though that an opening an independent record store in Chicago at the time they did would be a successful move?

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

i was somewhat skeptical as well. i wished them the best but at the time they started there were just waaaaaves of articles about the impending death of the music retail business because of the ubiquity of downloading. of course, what they have going for them is that they're both completely awesome.

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 20 April 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

sorry i missed you trip maker, me and my wife had gone to hide out in the front room for the first band and i guess we missed our chance. your friends' band was awesome.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 23 April 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

It was a fun night, I pretty much stayed in the background. I'm sure another opportunity will arise.

Trip Maker, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

Good show? I actually was going to end up trying to go Saturday, but my son came down with a 103 degree temp Saturday afternoon.

Those Bitchin Bajas records were delivered to Cooper at the Bottle that night.
You are the first person to have purchased one.

Trip Maker, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

He was gonna charge me $12 but I had a 20 and he had a 5 so I just took the 5 as change. Blood money!

two months pass...

CAVE and Wume (WUME? haven't heard them yet but was recommended to me by a record store employee) are playing
* in my neighborhood
* two days after my birthday
* at 5pm

Thank you, cosmos!

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Thursday, 19 July 2012 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

Wume is almost the name of the town where Faust lived/recorded

mizzell, Friday, 20 July 2012 00:58 (eleven years ago) link

one month passes...

So this show was really good! Wume had a weird setup with the synths and drums facing each other and then a sax player over on the side. A few problems with executing the extended jams, but they show a lot of promise. Sad they forgot their records, I would have bought one. Looking forward to hearing what they do in the future for sure.

Cave were the same as they always are -- tight and forward-moving. You can see me scratching my shoulder in the venue's fb cover image though!

cool...these guys have anything new coming out? guess it hasn't been that long since the last LP, but ...

tylerw, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:54 (eleven years ago) link

I love a day show. Never heard of Wume. The Cave sets in my town last weekend were fun, it was nice to hear a new song and some reworked older material. The event on the Missouri River was kind of disappointing. Isis from the Source family dug it, though.

There are plans for future releases but I think it may take some time. I think that there may be more Bitchin Bajas stuff available before the new Cave stuff. Oh, someone in Chicago has started up a flexi label (flexi-discs like you used to get in cereal boxes or whatever) and Cave is going to do one of those. I think there will only be a couple hundred copies. I am sure the track will be included on another release. It's a good track, includes a flute solo.

Trip Maker, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

it was really fun to see them play in a small garden setting though -- cicada noises between songs and whatnot

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 27 August 2012 19:00 (eleven years ago) link

And it isn't that Cave was disappointing at the River gig, just that the event itself was kind of a drag for the volunteers and talent.
Don't really want to elaborate beyond that.

xpost that sounds like fun.

aw man, bummerz.

saw these dudes like two years ago, still one of the best shows i've seen in a looooong time.

Haven't been able to catch them before, but psyched to see them at a house-show here in Indianapolis in a couple weeks.

Yes. House. Show.

The flexi is neat! Cool art and great sound. It's a Rotted Tooth release: http://rottedtoothrecordings.com/
Looks like Wume has worked with Rotted Tooth. I think one of the guys from Wume has been adding parts to Cave recordings, like the flute on the flexi track. ooh Running has, too. Those guys are great. Check this hilarious tour diary from when Running went out with CAVE last year

I meant that running has worked with Rotted Tooth, not added to Cave recordings. Garbledy.

lol at

As bad as it got out there on the road with Cave we learned a fewvaluable lessons that are sure to stick with us for years to come.Similar to the way scars stick with you after severe cigarette burnshave been inflicted on you, or the way $7,438 of credit debt will stickwith you because you let Cave talk you into out bidding a guy fromMacau on EBay for a signed copy of the new Lou Reed and MetallicaCD Lulu that turned out to be fake anyway.

tylerw, Friday, 21 September 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link

Oh yeah! They were listening to Lulu really deliberately, one new song a day.
They figured that was the only way they would get through it.
lol at Lechera's reaction to Rotted tooth.
That film archives video uses a brand new recording.
Jeremy Freeze from Jerusalem and the Starbaskets is playing guitar in CAVE right now.
He's gone out on tour with them before, but these new tracks are the first time he's recorded with them.

Trip Maker, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

oh cool, i didn't know that! is he on that recording posted just above (the vimeo)? that song is awesome. the visuals are great too.

yes, he is. He's on the flexi, too.

Jerusalem and CAVE are "home" for the holiday, they each did a set last night. Both sounded amazing. After touring Europe, CAVE is just tight as hell. They sounded like fucking Deep Purple or something. I was blown away.

Trip Maker, Sunday, 25 November 2012 19:00 (eleven years ago) link

Jerusalem played Steeple and it ruled. They played a bunch of old songs.
Kim was feeling under the weather, though, so they cut their planned hour-long set short.

I missed EVERY LAST ONE of their many recent local shows, but I do plan to make a special trip to buy the latest Bitchin Bajas EP.
I'd even be a booster. I recommend "Jelly" to fans of slow warm droney atmospheric music with a faint hint of melody.
