i will fess to having gone back several days afterwards to redo a particular mix: find the first half of the "problem" in the recorded mix and play it on your speakers; then get THAT SAME RECORD and match the tempo on deck A; put next record on deck B; redo mix
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link
Then when done, slice out the bad mix
yeah i am just not savvy enough w/ any sort of sound editing software to do this
and i sort of like just re-doing the whole, it scratches that same itch i had as a kid that would make me play levels of sonic over and over just to get 100% of the coins w/o getting hit once, or quit in mortal kombat as soon as i got scratched or missed a fatality.
― the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago) link
It's REALLY easy. Use Audacity and it's just cut and paste. I can't remember if Audacity supports multiple tracks, but with Garage Band or any multitrack software, it's just a question of moving the second part back and forth until it sounds right.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:51 (twelve years ago) link
It does, and it's super easy. Heh, I've done so many edits on mixes that I just started making the whole thing in audacity.
the late great, i hate listening to your mixes because it makes me want ALL YOUR RECORDS.
And this, essentially.

after putting some mixes together production-style (ie not real time at all) i tried doing something in Mixxx and almost had a heart attack.

My next tip, learn the keyboard shortcuts. Having to do stuff by mouse sucks and it's a lot easier to do things on the beat with keys.

lol @ the restarting mortal kombat when you get hit thing
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 20 April 2012 00:31 (twelve years ago) link
you can also program your own keyboard shortcuts, you basically want to completely minimize what you need to do w/ your mouse
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 20 April 2012 00:32 (twelve years ago) link
I can't figure out where to do that.
― hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Friday, 20 April 2012 00:33 (twelve years ago) link
I use virtual dj I just assumed mixxx had the same thing (I have mixxx too, but for some reason I find it harder to access different folders quickly with it)
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 20 April 2012 00:35 (twelve years ago) link
nvm sry I can't find that in mixxx

how to maintain constant volume, especially when you're mixing live? I often realized that a few tracks in my mix sounds louder/quieter than the rest only after a couple of listens. And that was after going through some mastering before uploading.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 02:21 (twelve years ago) link
good question, i struggle with that too, i guess that's why jeff mills is always touching his knob(s)

You can adjust the gain, you know.
― hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Friday, 20 April 2012 05:25 (twelve years ago) link
In general when DJing sometimes it helps to pay more attention to the level meters than what you hear. Use the gain to get the cue to a level that matches what's already playing.
But this is never perfect, I do massive massive automated volume adjustments in software to try to get the levels somewhat in the same ballpark. This is also really easy but you need software that can handle it.
― dan selzer, Friday, 20 April 2012 05:32 (twelve years ago) link
with the software I use, automatic volume adjustment makes the mix sounds like CRAP.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 05:46 (twelve years ago) link
I prob adjust the gain and bass eq knobs more than everything else on my mixer combined.

But how do you know whether the current track is on the same volume as the first track or so?
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 06:59 (twelve years ago) link
Volume meters / yr own two ears (though they're pretty unreliable after awhile). Yr mixer doesn't have led volume meters?
― Clay, Friday, 20 April 2012 07:01 (twelve years ago) link
I use a PC and there's no volume meter on the software I use. I'm saving to buy a controller though. Want to get proper.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 07:10 (twelve years ago) link
not saying that mixing with a controller is "proper" but it's a first step
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 07:11 (twelve years ago) link

o_O

― hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Friday, 20 April 2012 07:20 (twelve years ago) link
I'm about to buy a controller, primarily so I can easily record mixes at home...maybe I'll take it to gigs w/ my laptop but I'm still wary of bringing a laptop because I don't want to lose my cred.
Actually because it's expensive and I can't imagine it not getting destroyed.
I'm looking at the Novation Twitch, I played with it at Guitar Center and am not sure I can get used to using the touch strip in place of the platters. I don't scratch or anything, I'm just so accustomed to setting my cue poing and adjusting pitch that way.
If I decide I need platters there's the Traktor Kontrol S2, but I think I'm leaning towards Serato/Itch over Traktor.
There's also the Vestax VCI-300 mk II and VCI-100 mk II. Used, the price isn't so bad. Twitch I've seen loval for as low as 340.
Or I may hold out for the VCI-380 which is $$$ and not out yet, but is basically a VCI-300 with a Twitch attached to it PLUS it's a real mixer so I can connect my 1200s to it.
― dan selzer, Friday, 20 April 2012 07:27 (twelve years ago) link
but it will indeed make you lose your cred.

So here to celebrate the start of Spring, a mix of both new and classic bass, house, techno, garage and electro tunes as heard at our recent gig at Joshua Brooks, Manchester.

fauxmarc do you actually put together mixes with it? i use it for chopping and editing speech and putting together radio packages, which it really excels at. i see it as like an audacity that actually works, a replacement for Deck II (oldies will get the reference) or similar.

I can't remember if I've posted this before, but I really like this mix. It's all vinyl, one take, recorded directly to minidisc. (minidisc!) It was one of those mixes that I made and forgot about, and surprisingly when I rediscovered it I found it was really good. Here it is, the long lost Tracer Hand mix which I'm calling Human Made.

@etc - there's a PDF user guide on the Reaper site which gets you up to speed. If you've ever used Audacity, Protools, etc you'll find it familiar. If not that's almost helpful because you won't have to relearn your own hardcoded muscle-memory keyboard shortcuts, etc.
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 23 April 2012 12:23 (twelve years ago) link
yeah i put together mixes with it if i'm feeling pressed for time on other projects (which is all the time lately of course) - it's great for chopping and editing but with a simple holding of the alt-button (in windows) the same tool is a great time stretcher you can use for arbitrary stretching or to snap to whichever interval of a bar.
i haven't really used any guides and don't know anything about music but i just play around and always end up learning a bit more about it as i go along. love that visually on the track you can also see/modify whichever fx parameter or panning/volume envelope, as well as assign them to an arbitrary midi controls, record the controlling in real-time, etc.
it's really good about multi-channel handling/mapping as well, like i can have 16 channels from maschine be a different sound/instrument/sample each mapped and recorded to it's own track in reaper
