I love the promo film for "Apeman" but would rather never hear the song again.

Over the years I've grown to dislike all the Kinks songs where Ray does his white boy calypso voice.

EZ otm about Apeman/calypso voice. The Lola LP is such a mixed bag.

rob, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

hmm don't think I've ever hear I Need You

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

also Apeman is great wtf! I voted for it. sentiment is very David Byrne.

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

Sentiment is fine; accent is not.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

i wish i voted.. this band rules

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

Ray went a little nuts with that accent on tour; about half of the Everybody's In Show-Biz live record is in that voice.

Quite happy to see this place. A very late and painful cut from my ballot.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

Sentiment is fine; accent is not.

I honestly don't even know what accent you're talking about. have never noticed it.

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

being American, all Kinks songs sound like they're sung in a funny accent to me lol

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:39 (twelve years ago) link

RD always sounds like he's using some kind of ironic affectation in a way that most of his contemporaries do not, though

some former lust object you've shamefully forgotten (some dude), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

I don't mind the irony, but the songs with the "banana boat" inflections like "Apeman" and "I'm On An Island" wear on me very quickly.

Great song. Thanks Kinks Kronikles!

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

never really listened to God's Children until yesterday and was really struck by how the appeal of the "don't tell me what to do!" sentiment is immediately undercut by a very unappealing conservatism

Waterloo? Oh, we've sunsetted that. (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

Stop Your Sobbing and I Go to Sleep both done far better by Pretenders than by The Kinks.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

I dunno the latter but def agree about the former

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

The Pretenders have never made anything better.

The Pretenders have never made anything better.

They made those Kinks tracks better. As for their cover of "Thin Line Between Love and Hate", er, I'd agree with you.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

I have a visceral loathing of Chrissie Hynde. Her voice is one of those nails on a chalkboard things for me.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

god's children is not a great sentiment but boy what a song.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

I've got to catch up some..."Where Have All the Good Times Gone" was my #1. I once tried to talk a grade 8 teacher into using it as the grad slide-show music for our school, but they stuck with the corny "Forever Young."

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 21:00 (twelve years ago) link

God's Children does kind of make me sick because I don't really believe in He/Him or God, but it was my #1 because the song itself, and the melody, are just TOO MUCH for my brain to handle. It makes me feel a love for all of humanity, even the part I can't seem to reach, and that makes me happy. Magic.

So hooray for that.

Also Chrissie Hynde is my hometown sister, back off homies!

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

Kinks didn't even do a version of "I Go to Sleep," right? Just a Ray demo? That's quite a song.

timellison, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, it's really just an early demo of Ray's. But it's been appended to some Kinks reissues.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

never heard that pretenders version, pretty nice. love the kinks/ray version though, i voted for it!

tylerw, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

wow 6 out of 11 so far are on my ballot.

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Thursday, 19 April 2012 03:13 (eleven years ago) link

Seek out the Peggy Lee cover of "I go to sleep", I reckon it 'informed' the Pretenders' version

Mark G, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:51 (eleven years ago) link

You all know that the Davies' sister died at a local dance when Ray was 13, right?

I had no idea! this does sorta change the tone of the song

― iatee, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 13:41 (Yesterday) Permalink

I knew about this, and it does add a certain weight to the song, but even with that in mind it still remains one of my least favourites.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 19 April 2012 07:37 (eleven years ago) link

EZ otm about Apeman/calypso voice. The Lola LP is such a mixed bag.

― rob, Wednesday, April 18, 2012 7:25 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Ray's 'calypso voice' is definitely one of my least favourites of his vocal styles, but I couldn't agree about 'Lola Vs Powerman...' being a mixed bag at all. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that if there's one Kinks albums I'd take to the 'desert island' with me, that one would be it!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 19 April 2012 07:40 (eleven years ago) link
