from NYC, don't think they ever released anything, apparently they did record some stuff tho. now defunct but I'm trying to inveigle something.

lol me too - in fact I could've sworn I looked at that site a few years ago and it was frozen in 2003, either I am mistaken or they managed to reboot it recently?

two weeks pass...

so whats been going on around portland/olympia/spokane/seattle? who should i check out from that area?

billstevejim, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

This may violate the 'non-indie'ness of this thread to some extent, but from Olympia, you should scope:

- Milk Music
- Gun Outfit
- Broken Water
- Weird TV
- Son Skull
- White Boss

ghosttaster, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:28 (eleven years ago) link

Milk Music just played up the road from where I was doing a show tonight (in the UK) which obv meant I didn't see them - they have a groundswell of publicity on their side tho so it probly did OK

my show had a pretty crappy turnout but featured London ensemble WOOLF who are relevant to the parameters of this thread and were triffic in a no wave riot grrrl standup drummer Skinned Teen way

I love the First Four EPs and lurve last year's "Rotten Apple," but am I the only fan who finds the production on the new Off! album a little... off?

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:51 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't heard the new Off!...as much add I loved the 7 inch box, and seeing them live, I kinda don't wanna mess with it....it was this perfect little blast from someone I'd never expected to care about again

Not sure I want off to be around like a career band

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 17 May 2012 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, totally! It was just this out-of-nowhere surprise thing; it would kind of be cool as a standalone curiosity. What's wrong with the production on the new one? I thought the Pitchfork review pretty much said "more of the same," tunes-wise.

Walter Galt, Thursday, 17 May 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

I like the new one a good deal more than the EPs collection - there's very little demonstrable difference btwn them other than (imo) the songs on 'Off!' are better and earwormier

cissémanwhore (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

def going to check it out

their live show was amazing...the "encore" was the first 3 songs over again which was the funniest, they didn't know any more songs

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

also keith morris is so TINY!

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

They've got a '91-era David Yow effect on the vocals except annoying, and the drums sound muted. The sound on the EPs is something approaching punk perfection for me...

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 17 May 2012 18:16 (eleven years ago) link

but I'll buy that the songs are better, will investigate further.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 17 May 2012 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

I happened to catch Coffin Pricks this Saturday in Chicago and can attest to their greatest in a live setting.

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 21 May 2012 13:57 (eleven years ago) link

ha i saw them on thursday, chris thompson seemed kind of uncomfortable

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 21 May 2012 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

the Culture Kids full-length fuckin rules and you all should just download it.

Just heard the new White Lung and Grass Widow albums. Both are awesome! My favorite offerings from both bands, especially White Lung. This new album SHREDS, and really shows off their abilities as musicians. I also got around to the Neon Piss LP, and it's very good as well. Waaaay different than what I was expecting them to sound like. And yeah, I agree with Table, the Culture Kids LP is rad. I like the production on their last full length better, but I think the songs on this new one are way better.

Izzy Pod, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 08:29 (eleven years ago) link

will listen to that White Lung LP later and assuming it's as good as decriptions suggest grab a copy when it reaches the UK

cissémanwhore (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 09:03 (eleven years ago) link

came here to make mention of white lung but i see i've been beaten to the punch. album just dropped this week, i think. SHREDS is a good word to describe it, but it also doesn't emphasize how great the song-writing is. i find w/ a lot of popular hardcore acts these days, i can get behind the sound, but they really lack in the tunage department. not here. stream the LP here:

not sure where to post about this so I'll just put it here, really been liking the Tronics reissue on What's Your Rupture

"Loved Backed By Force" LP and the Shark Fucks / Time Off single

dmr, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

Hell yes, I love those Tronics reissues. Sic Alps tribute to Tronics 7" also good but not as good.

Peaceniks, Homos, and Potheads Who Wear Ties (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:27 (eleven years ago) link

speaking of What's Your Rupture this band may be old news to some non-U.S. peeps but they just put out the Royal Headache record here ... so fucking good. search turns up some touts for it on last year's punk/non-indie/pitchfork gtfo thread but I never heard it until just now.

dmr, Thursday, 14 June 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

not crazy about the royal headache stuff - i like that they have a singer who can actually sing a little (good gimmick) but the songs aren't there

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 14 June 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

I really love it but also recognize that a lotta the regulars in this thread may not like Ted Leo and early Strokes as much as I do (and the bands that those bands are influenced by, obv)

that's kinda what it reminds me of but more raw and soulful

dmr, Thursday, 14 June 2012 21:33 (eleven years ago) link

listening now, pretty good...like if the early oblivions were a power pop band

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 14 June 2012 21:35 (eleven years ago) link

i'm really digging this royal headache!

i def hear the ted leo/pharmacists vibe in the songs

and though i'm so tired of lo-fi it sounds good on this one for some reason

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 14 June 2012 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

I listened to it 3 times yesterday

was really excited for this after hearing "bad thing", but the rest of it sounded bad to me on one listen

i do not understand the fuss over king tuff

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 15 June 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

it's not particularly unique but it's very catchy - alone & stoned is my favorite

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 15 June 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

haven't heard much fuss about it. seems like a less obnoxious alternative to girls and jay reatard. listening again to bad thing right now. it's great.
