(think this is true of many things now besides just straight pop btw, cf rick ross (the rap lana del ray) or trey songz or whoever really)
i always put this down to collapse-of-industry desperation necessitating the creation of a loyal stanbase who buy into an artist as a brand, a lifestyle, not just someone performing good songs

rick ross (the rap lana del ray)
lol waht... explain this please.
― Peace (peaceful) (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:17 (twelve years ago) link
rawse and songz are pertinent examples b/c i'd have been fine with them puttering away as third-tier artists without any real charisma or compelling persona who just alighted on the occasional hot song, which is their natural condition and that's totally fine, but to see them fêted as great artists is seriously o_0 o_0 o_0

i assume it's the illusion of an idealised "type" that neither are actually up to pulling off most of the time

can we please leave ross out of your rape discourse

yeah i mean just in terms of branding i was thinking about it being like good little random adverts that come and go versus the furore and hype over what the next guinness or levis ad was, where the brand is pre-established and the work of the ad becomes about how it reifies the image already known
these all are uselessly broad strokes to be talking in though tbf

do people feel me on the foreground/background point i was trying to make or did that all just come noise
was kinda hoping someone would run with it and make me look good

I haven't gotten used to thinking of people in terms of "branding" tbh

Why does MTV censor the word "trap?"
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:18 (twelve years ago) link
"Come On A Cone""Beez In A Trap""Stupid Hoe"Would've made a good 3-song EP.
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:22 (twelve years ago) link
"I Am Your Leader" can sneak on there too even though I don't like the chorus.
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:44 (twelve years ago) link
people who put together EPs or mini-albums of this that exclude "gun shot" are not doing it right
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 07:58 (twelve years ago) link
Maybe I need to hear it more but as of right now the chorus of "Gun shot" sounds like "forget about the Price Tag" so it's not really doing it for me.
"HOV Lane" is cool too.. I forgot about that one. So I'll up mine to a 5-song 10-inch.

Rhyming "roman zolanski" with "roman polanski" in a song is so fucking stupid that it chills me to the marrow every time
― azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:00 (twelve years ago) link
I kind of agree but then I heard jeezy rhyme 'chanel swag' with 'chanel bag' yesterday so
― dayo, Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link
that's a pretty standard jeezy rhyme though so I can't be mad at this point in my jeezy-listening career
― dayo, Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link
I think the root of the problem is that you have a Jeezy-listening career

"this small stretch of songs would make a nice EP" is a really annoying way of saying "this album has three good songs"

i kinda feel like she probably came up with the name 'roman zolanski' without consciously realizing it was one letter off from someone pretty famous who it wouldn't really be cool in any way for her to shout out, so that line was just her awkward way of belatedly acknowledging and dismissing that

I mean I feel like if your story was really true she would have just called herself 'roman polanski', not knowing that it was the name of a famous person
― dayo, Friday, 20 April 2012 01:10 (twelve years ago) link
nicki's "alter egos" are the most overplayed aspect of her entire career
― yologram (J0rdan S.), Friday, 20 April 2012 01:11 (twelve years ago) link
I can't really tell who is who, I just listen for the cool raps
― dayo, Friday, 20 April 2012 01:15 (twelve years ago) link
well yeah -- in the "roman" songs she's rapping in the same way about the same things and from the same perspective as every other song
her saying that she's rapping as "roman zolanski" is as meaningful as if she said she's rapping as warren beatty
― yologram (J0rdan S.), Friday, 20 April 2012 01:18 (twelve years ago) link
not sure even the general public cares a whit about Roman/Nicki or Slim Shady/Em/Marshall Mathers.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 April 2012 01:18 (twelve years ago) link
of course not
t.i. vs t.i.p. remains the most hilariously pointless distinction of all

― azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 20 April 2012 01:20 (twelve years ago) link
wasn't the idea of D12 that each of the six members had two alter egos? bad idea jeans ahoy
― lathe darkman (some dude), Friday, 20 April 2012 01:22 (twelve years ago) link
In order to make up the dozen, it was decided the six members at the time would each create an alter-ego. Proof's was Dirty Harry, Bizarre's was Peter S. Bizarre, Kuniva's was Hannz G. (which later became Rondell Beene), Kon Artis' was Mr. Porter, Bugz' was Robert Beck and Eminem created the famous character Slim Shady.
