This is a friend of mine.

I was at a bday party for a 4-year-old girl and they had fake moustaches for everyone. It was too hot and itchy.

two weeks pass...

One thing about comedy moustaches, they're good for covering up any *actual* moustaches these girls might be rocking. Which I know is a constant and unmentionable battle for all of womankind.

Ugh.

Me 'n' acrobat saw a girl w/an acrylic moustache necklace (ready to be held under nose) in a pub in Soho the other day.

guys one of my best friends' facebook picture is her with a comedy moustache; how to cope?

You can block people off your Facebook, right?

Helsinki Is Other People (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 February 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago) link

It's gender subversion and I fucking love it.

In fact... I find it almost... vaguely erotic. It's kind of like the female equivalent of slashing yourself, making yourself male. Lots of these girls (Alexa fucking Chung aside) are totally hott.

I thought men were supposed to find it all "woo, hott" when women "lezzed up" - or does this not count because it's so obviously driven by female, rather then male desires?

how does wearing a fake moustache for fun = 'lezzing up'?

s1ocki kong country (cankles), Saturday, 28 February 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago) link

To clarify for those of you not up on the terminology - "slashing yourself" in a gay sense, rather than the self harm sense.

Perhaps that's it, though, it makes men have to confront homoeroticism in a way that makes them uncomfortable - attractive women signifying as men. (While slash is, conversely, signifying attractive men as women.)

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 14:43 (fifteen years ago) link

No, I think it's because it's some wacky student indie bullshit tbh.

Sugban Stevens (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 February 2009 14:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah now I see how you can read it like that, but I don't think it's a conscious effort on the part of fake-moustache-wearing girls. I really really doubt most of the girls in these photos are thinking 'look at me subverting the dominant paradigm!!' and I would guess that even fewer have any idea of what slashing is in that sense.

salsa shark, Saturday, 28 February 2009 14:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Ah, so it's the usual LBZC hating on other people having more fun than they are.

And yeah, of course, SS, you're right. I mean, how could a bunch of INDIE GIRLS in COLLEGE possibly be having any deep philosophical thoughts, how silly of me to even give them that kind of credit. Because, yeah, I never had a deep thought in my head when I was an indie girl at LOLcollege.

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 14:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not even gonna click on that. I'm actually really beginning to hate the Onion. Don't you ever get, well... bored of being slightly ironically mocking about *everything*?

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm hungover and it's more screaming spittle-flecked hatred for myself outwards than slight ironic mocking. And I for real don't want to get into a custard pie fight with you Kate, but the idea that the only reason somebody might dislike this is because they're threatened by upfront sexual subversion is like saying the only reason I dislike the University hockey club bellowing "God Save the Queen" in my local is because I'm threatened by their beautiful singing voices.

Sugban Stevens (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, but the spittle-flecked hatred on ILX is alway so much more vipituous, especially from the LBZC, when attractive women are involved. You know?

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I can actually see why you might say that but I still think it's bollocks.

Sugban Stevens (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Happy to be corrected if you can evidence your claim, though.

Sugban Stevens (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I have never seen an indie girl wearing a comedy moustache.

Pashmina, Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:10 (fifteen years ago) link

In fact I'm still not entirely convinced that Dom didn't just make it all up.

Pashmina, Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Err, Pash, there's dozens of pictures upthread.

Sugban Stevens (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, but they're pictures off the interweb, I mean you could back up just about any proposal, no matter how far-fetched, using pictures scavenged off the interweb, no?

Pashmina, Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:13 (fifteen years ago) link

(i realise that this is a somewhat shaky argument)

Pashmina, Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:14 (fifteen years ago) link

One of the many great aspects of living in the future.

I could give a toss about this, but rilly the evidence is there.

Should probably start a thread about cross-dressing rugby club members, for balance.

Sugban Stevens (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Hi Kate,

Are you associating me with LZBC? If so, why?

Also I didn't mean to imply that these women aren't capable of thought and I find it a bit surprising you'd twist my comment that way. I really just think they're having fun and I would be surprised if a majority of them thought they were being subversive. I don't actually have anything against other girls (attractive or not) wearing comedy moustaches. I think it's a bit silly but hey they're enjoying themselves and they're not hurting anyone else.

Well, quite. Me either TBH. It occurs to me that Frida was pretty hott:

..and she didn't have a "comedy" moustache, she had a real one. Other than that, whatever!

Adam Bruneau, Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link

it's sexist to think a tache signifies 'male' imho.

Some many kinds of wrong here in one convenient-sized question.

i think it just looks awful all in a row like this. on its own on someone's random profile, i reckon it's pretty funny.

New York Beard and Moustache Competition

On March 14 at Public Assembly, the finest facial hair-sporting denizens of Brooklyn went face to face for the distinction of winning in various categories including the "recession" beard, full beard freestyle, and women's artificial.

It'd be interesting to determine: is the problem with this that it's indie girls, or is it the "LOLmoustache!!!" concept in general? Because I find the latter extremely tedious and annoying. Like, these are the same people who will insist that various things in mainstream comedy aren't funny all by themselves, but somehow stupid beard = "hilarious" rather than "played out from being sort of barely funny three years ago." I guess this makes me part of the fun-hating crowd mentioned above, but I think there's a large gulf that separates fun-hating from afraid-of-empowered-women fun-hating.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 16 March 2009 22:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Because let me tell you, it's really annoying to be trying to have a conversation with somebody and every five minutes their friend has to shriek about how hilarious their fake moustache is.
