I don't think your average tUne-YaRds fan even knows "Just A Friend"

clicked on this thread and immediately searched for "Just a Friend" then read Whiney's post. ;_;

"Nobody Beats" just over "Vapors" but was pretty tempted to vote "Pickin' Boogers"

I was at a Public Enemy show in 1989 - at the Palace, now the Avalon, in Hollywood - when the DJ spun "Just A Friend." know what the people who sang along gleefully, i.e. everybody in the building, weren't? "lurker herbs."

That sounds awesome, but since 1989 and especially in the past 15 years, it's been commercialized to the point where the song is probably bigger than Biz himself.. The context surrounding it is a lot different now than when it was fresh.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 07:18 (eleven years ago) link

TBH, I find more randoms know "Vapors" than "Just A Friend" these days due to Grand Theft Auto.

Voting for "Make The Music With Your Mouth, tUne-YaRdsBiz".

etc, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 07:45 (eleven years ago) link

There's no way "Vapors" gets played at bar mitzvah's more often than "Just A Friend."

billstevejim, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 07:50 (eleven years ago) link

man biz must hate that, having real rap shit for rap heads like "just a friend" commercialized so

da croupier, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 12:00 (eleven years ago) link

For the record, I love "Just a Friend" too.

azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 12:30 (eleven years ago) link

"Just A Friend" used to be the only song I knew by him but I heard Childish Gambino perform "Vapors" on an episode of Community and it was amazing! Haven't heard the original but I can't imagine it's better, voting for that anyway.

I'm glad i invented being a hip-hop hardman on ILX. Also, notable that most of the goon crew besides capn-save-a-garbus didn't show up yet. too busy posting about TREE i guess

blindly dissing people that aren't even the thread with some toothless "what does he listen to.....? oh yeah, that's a stupid name, i'll put it in all caps" shit is meaningless, yes

sorry i made fun of of tune-yards fans and that makes me dr. horribles blog-a-log dogg

in fairness to some dude, it is a tragedy of high order that now when you think of Biz Markie literally the first thing you think is "oh no Tuneyards" + I'd wager on the evidence this is true with a lot of good music for you - that literally the first thing you think about it is OH NOE DO THE INDIES LIKE IT WHAT IF THEY DO??

in fairness to Whiney his zings this morning are fucking hilarious and I'm looking forward to collecting mine

i was afraid his logorrhea was heading away from dennis miller and into mark leyner territory lately, but then he sprinted right past that into jagger country

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

how i babelfish it down to an extent
- whiney sees himself as a hipster version of ilx poster usic
- he considers some dude's posting itt as getting more and more butthurt
- refers to some dude as "Roomrunner", an obscure baltimore band reference
- "sub-Onion right to enjoy every piece of pop culture" - apparently some dude is guilty of something the Onion is notorious for i.e. enjoying all pop culture
- "garbussy" - 'garbagey' combined with something that probably refers to something else, some kind of "trending topic" perhaps

whiney, how'd i do?

...which is to say, a single.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:51 (eleven years ago) link

a single is something that's eligible for the singles chart imo. I don't think a flexi is, as you're not buying the record, you're buying the magazine & you get the flexi with it. a flexi is its own thing. there's disparate us/uk rules that muddy the waters (your single is ineligible for the charts in the UK if it has more than one song per side) but I think "released as a standalone 7" is a fair enough rule for "single"

My jukebox full of the backs of cereal boxes begs to differ with you. But, as I said, I voted "Nobody Beats" anyway, despite the draconian music-business-insider pedantry of this poll. It is also a better song than Bennie, but by just a hair.
