I-Octane making a grab for populist summer anthem status here:

xpost, always excited to check out Toi

rob, Monday, 16 April 2012 23:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

Toi's gentle breeze voice is the perfect vehicle for a love=being stoned metaphor isn't it?

rob, Monday, 16 April 2012 23:49 (1 year ago) Permalink

i'd love to have some of the dancehall cru join us for dancehall monday on turntable.fm: Link

to contribute, new track from demarco, apparently a popcaan diss (lol):

chilli, Monday, 23 April 2012 22:07 (1 year ago) Permalink

can't really do stuff like turntable.fm at work unfortunately. this thread bump reminds me I've been meaning to ask what everyone thinks of Potential Kidd's A Yuh So Nice which the internet tells me is very big in JA:

rob, Monday, 23 April 2012 23:11 (1 year ago) Permalink

i couldn't stand it at first, but that potential kidd is really good! a really different sound then most of the genre these days as well. though the part where he says he'd rather be a rapist than gay is somewhat offputting.

chilli, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 22:25 (1 year ago) Permalink

:/ christ, I didn't even notice that. otoh, i have to agree that it's initially very grating, which is probably why I didn't parse the lyrics

been thinking about bumping this thread just to double down on the 3 posts prior to potential kidd. the LoveBug riddim might be my favorite so far this year, at least in the sense of enjoying version after version. Washroom have smartly kept most of them at around the 2:00 mark, so it pretty much demands full-riddim mix treatment. The Toi is wonderful and the I-Octane is pleasantly reminiscent of Overproof from last year.

Love that Toi track!

"Coolie Gal" is several kinds of dubious, but it's sweet to hear Popcaan in such good form:

This new Loudspeaker riddim from Mixpak has promise. Predictably excited to hear the Natalie Storm, but here's Machel Montano:

the mixtape pictured in that video is really good. It's not the most artfully mixed thing you'll ever hear though

Glendale Goshia Gordon, who performs under the name Busy Signal, could face between 12 to 18 months in prison and a fine of $3,000 to $30,000, under sentencing guideline recommendations.

...

Gordon, 33, was charged in February 2002 with two counts related to cocaine trafficking, which carried a sentence of at least 15 years in prison. He fled the U.S. before his trial was to begin in Minnesota and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He has been a fugitive for the past decade.

“You knew you should appear, and you didn’t,” U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank said while asking Gordon a series of questions Thursday.

“Yes, your honor,” Gordon replied.

Gordon was detained by authorities in London in May and accused of traveling with false documents, including a passport that listed a different name. He returned to Kingston, Jamaica, and was arrested at the airport there.

curmudgeon, Friday, 20 July 2012 16:11 (10 months ago) Permalink

weird that after he serves his sentence he has 45 days to return to Jamaica or face the original charges, no?

rob, Friday, 20 July 2012 16:32 (10 months ago) Permalink

yes, weird, weird.

curmudgeon, Friday, 20 July 2012 17:19 (10 months ago) Permalink

haven't been paying that much attention lately. hence...diggin' the 'tuff head' riddim posted upthread. dunno if they've been mentioned elsewhere, but i've also been quite enjoying the 'repja', 'overtime' and 'bassline' riddims - this last one is produced by genius.

anything i should really look up to?

rusty_allen, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 16:26 (9 months ago) Permalink

on repeat this friday afternoon

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 5 August 2012 21:22 (9 months ago) Permalink

This sounds slightly more amazing played pitched up the way Robbo Ranx does it, but still:

Tim F, Monday, 6 August 2012 11:10 (9 months ago) Permalink

Popcaan is pretty nice on Summer Wave too, though not nearly as ebullient as Gaza Slim.

rob, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 02:50 (9 months ago) Permalink

Is Chris Martin's "Na Na Na" getting much airplay Tim? I wasn't pleasantly surprised to hear it on the radio in Bern rather randomly a few weeks ago.

rob, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 02:52 (9 months ago) Permalink

this video should have been reserved for a Fatima al-Qadiri collaboration or something, but I found it a mesmerizing, awkward solution to Vybz being locked up:

rob, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 03:00 (9 months ago) Permalink

apologies for bombing the thread, but has ILM talked about Tommy Lee's unhinged style yet?

(warning: very NSFW video and hateful lyrics):

rob, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 03:22 (9 months ago) Permalink

^still not sure about Tommy Lee: silly & cartoonish or genuinely unsettling?

anyway, this Tifa track is great:

rob, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 01:29 (9 months ago) Permalink

^^ love it. oddly, that 'poolside' riddim instinctively seems the kind of stuff suited for some kind of threatening/deep/male vocal which makes 'hold on' even better for working out of that - biased, imaginary and probably stupid from my part - context.

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 02:06 (9 months ago) Permalink

can't muster enough will to listen to the tommy lee tunes, tbh.

this sounded great yesterday, while working late at night :

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 02:09 (9 months ago) Permalink

i think you're spot on re the Tifa and the expected gender dynamics. more broadly, no one in dancehall sounds like they're having nearly as much fun as Tifa this year. That faux-dramatic opening--the deep breath especially--to "Ex Man" still makes me chuckle every time.

lol, I didn't exactly sell Tommy Lee did I? idk, the Psycho video is sort of a mesmerizing attempt at being genuinely antisocial in a way I don't think I've seen in JA recently.

and yeah, Dust is nice! Ward 21's new riddim, Bex, is pretty good too, though no one voicing really stood out to me. had high hopes for Deewun with either Timberlee or Tifa, since last year's "Gimme 60" with Natalie Storm was a personal favorite, but I need to revisit them, kind of blended when I checked it out the other day.

rob, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:14 (9 months ago) Permalink

another current favorite, Aidonia's "Militancy"

Nasty love for me

just sayin, Saturday, 25 August 2012 19:46 (8 months ago) Permalink

i just came back from both days at carnival and i'm like whoa

feel pummeled, essentially, but in a good way

norman jay was sick, crowd generally well behaved both days and some of the floats were outrageous. a few of them only had like 5 morose-looking guys nursing beers trailing behind, which was a little sad.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 27 August 2012 20:38 (8 months ago) Permalink

this could be a minute shorter, but I think it's the first thing I've heard from Masicka that suggested he has some range (haven't been paying strict attention tbf):

rob, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 02:57 (8 months ago) Permalink

^nice

cool production here from russian, that no diggity humming is endlessly catchy:

^my favorite Vybz track this year

rob, Saturday, 1 September 2012 19:26 (8 months ago) Permalink

any other Oregonians read this thread? LargeUp posted this video the other day that was filmed here (somewhere in central OR from the landscape):

another great Russian production:

This thread is such a browser killer, I think I'm going to stop embeds from here on out. If you haven't yet heard Lady Saw's "HEELS ON" go to youtube or spotify or whatever and do so immediately.
