i'm a relative newcomer to this podacast but the Tambor is my fave so far (even though I was never that big of a fan of the guy)

The David Cross episode was a good one. Pity he never got to finish his anecdote about Channel 4 controller Jane Hunt, due to Marc not being interested in/is weird about Britishers.

Legendary comedian and heralded podcaster MARC MARON announces the release of the ‘WTF WITH MARC MARON’ box set. The two-disc set, packaged in die-cut limited edition release of 1,000 copies, includes the first 100 episodes of Maron’s phenomenal podcast which has been called “Required Listening” by the likes of New York Magazine, New York Times, Huffington Post, Vanity Fair, and GQ, and “A fascinating hour” by Entertainment Weekly. With over 100 hours of content, the WTF box set features Maron’s compelling, in-depth interviews with Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Zach Galifianakis, Dane Cook, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt and the now-infamous two-part interview with Carlos Mencia, plus many more classic WTFs featuring the top entertainers working today.

In addition to audio files of the first 100 WTF episodes, the ‘WTF With Marc Maron’ box set includes video of WTF Live taped at The Bell House in Brooklyn (WTF Episode 213). The live show features Maron with an all-star guest line up which includes Artie Lange, Morgan Spurlock, Ira Glass, Elna Baker, Nick DiPaolo, Nick Griffin, Joe Mande, and Wayne Koestenbaum onstage in Fall 2011.

Yeahh, that's a bit much.

during the "Set List" show at the last night of Bridgetown Comedy Fest tonight, James Adomian dressed and performed as Maron and fuckin' killed. t

GODDAMN. I hope someone youtubes this.

@marcmaron: I had a dream that I performed in Portland last night.

@JAdomian: The second set was better than the first but you killed both shows. Tanker wants to book you for a full weekend.

I thought Tanker was only doing open mics for the weekend, but I guess they had a bunch of shows not on the official sched.

A pic I shot:

He would contort himself on that stool so much he almost ate it right off the stage a few times.

Wonderful episode with Kevin Burke - seems like a great guy.

sean gramophone, Sunday, 22 April 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

Kevin Hart is such a likable guy. I'm glad he was on WTF, it reminded me to go check out I'ma Grown Little Man which is ALL on youtube actually:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw3uDAtOrkk&feature=related

and is hilarious, especially the closer about his older road manager.

I wish there wasn't some of the homophobic stuff but it's really slight and the rest of it is good.

I'll be really bummed if he does what I think he will and cuts out stand-up for a while to focus on movies and TV shows.

(whoops, the closer I was referring to is at the end of Seriously Funny actually)

just listened to the Matt Graham episode yesterday. Such an experience... then made really weird and awkward by him trying to sell a board game to him.

hart intvw was great but maron talking to nonwhite comics always makes me nervous

max, Monday, 23 April 2012 13:36 (eleven years ago) link

he did well with hart because he remembered working the same clubs with him. otherwise we'd have had 30 more minutes of "black comedy and white comedy are two different worlds."

He must be 'running out'* of American comics though...

*I mean i'm sure there is a list of a 1000 other names to do but when its comes to both ones he can actually get hold of, ones who actually want to do it and ones he finds interesting enough for an interview.

There are a few dozen comics who have killed it on Comedy Bang Bang or other podcasts, but who are now probably too low level for Maron. He is definitely building toward some "legit" audience-building point, which is understandable--but not why I started listening to this podcast. I'm sure it would be a huge coup for Maron to get an Eddie Murphy interview but I doubt it would be any good. The worst WTFs have always been the ones with the most famous people. There's already a Studio 360 for Wayne Coyne interviews and whatnot.

Chris Rock's was really good, and I really enjoyed the Gary Shandling one too. I'm sure there are others that have slipped my mind.

His musician interviews may get better with time. He was kind of awkward with every guest back in his Air America days, but has since settled into a comfortable rhythm with comics. He'll get there with musicians, I bet.

Just listened to Kevin Hart, liked it a lot.

caro's johnson (Eazy), Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

This Wayne Coyne episode is pretty shit until Wayne turns into the interviewer and they get into ideas of performance and connection with the audience. It isn't great, but Wayne tries to find points of connection that Marc seems to oblivious too approach.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:07 (eleven years ago) link

For all the negative stuff I've said here, I still think Maron is a great interviewer. I know it's difficult to put out two hour plus shows a week while you're doing stand-up and a tv show. It's the same with Terry Gross--once you've become so familiar with an interviewers pet topics you end up rolling your eyes when they come up again and again. It's like, dude, we know you venerate Keith Richards and Bukowski-esque junkie bullshit. Either move past it or examine it more interestingly.

This is probably my hang-up though, since I hate all the Iggy/Sid/Johnny Thunders/GG/Bob Stinson/Cobain/Winehouse fuck-up worship that Maron still dabbles in.

President Keyes, Thursday, 3 May 2012 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

People like what they like, so I'm not gonna begrudge Maron his taste. I just wish he had a broader knowledge to fall back on.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 May 2012 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

I like the Wayne Coyne episode so far. They're just talking about planes and stuff but they have a nice rapport.

polyphonic, Thursday, 3 May 2012 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, finally hearing this now. It's a good "just shootin' the shit" episode. Also, one of my least favorite things in the world is listening to people who do drugs talk about doing drugs, but the way Wayne and Marc are talking about it is sorta fascinating.
