^^^ tragically, this may be true.

I had a feeling I was gonna be reprimamded. it's MY fault for not checking in five times a day - so...I'll remedy that.

And I'll bookmark it.
I apologize.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:44 (fifteen years ago) link

No reprimands here. Just :D

And Abbott there's LOADS of good stuff up there. You should check it out.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:55 (fifteen years ago) link

So, anyway. I was at a birthday party for my friends daughter (she's TWO!) with Skot S.'s best friend, who is immortalized on his '80's thread, and I met TWO ilx lurkers!
The number two is actually not significant. But it was weird - two people who "read ilx all the time" at work, but don't post because they're "afraid they would lose half of their productivity" if they did so.
I didn't reveal my identity. (For MANY good reasons; I just met them! Let's start off on the right foot, etc. :))
I mean, they talked about different threads, and were explaining ilx to the uninitiated in the group - meanwhile I'm like, dying to burst in and really explain it all, but...it's fun to hear someone explain ilx to people who have no idea (and potentially no interest) in it - except for the fact that there's a bunch of pictures of Maggie, from the '80's, posted on a thread.

This was a first for me.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 01:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I explained ILX to my son with something that I'm pretty sure someone at ILX wrote: It's a website about nothing! (I believe that person was riffing on Seinfeld being a "show about nothing.")

I have never run across lurkers, though. How crazy!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 01:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I have had lurkers introduce themselves to me at gatherings, at concerts and online. Then again I am me, so.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought so! I was like "Do you post?" - sort of trembling to have some strange screen name revealed, in the flesh! Nope - just lurkers. BUT - they lurk a lot, I think! Definitely know the ins and outs of the various boards.
Not ITR, however. I was able to be silently smug on that one. (They know ILM, ILE and Noize). Also - I don't think they know Skot IRL.

It was just very out of context. And I felt like I was having sort of an intense response: "Ilx? What? When? Screen name?" - because I know Maria, Beth and Scott, but otherwise you're all very dear strangers to me, really! I have been around here for enough years to feel pretty strongly about my online friendships. But I haven't actually met anyone from the boards, yet.
I should be going to Seattle in the next six months, so I'll hope for a FAP there - I would LOVE to meet Jaq and hang out with her in my old stomping grounds.
Oh, and we're all coming over to your house, Sara - when exactly?

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:17 (fifteen years ago) link

And Abbott there's LOADS of good stuff up there. You should check it out.

Oh yeah, I've read most of it. I concur. But like if I haven't read in a day and there's some things from last night stuck in there, I'm not gonna look. Unliess it is HI DERE SPIDERMANGS.

Abbott, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I miss Beth. :(

Abbott, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Sorry ned, that was an xpost.
But, yeah, I am not surprised that lurkers (and semi-lurkers)would see you and recognize you. After all, that purple tie is a dead giveaway. (Kidding!)

But you are very much a public figure on ilx and ilm. I was looking at a picture that you posted, wondering if I would recognize you if I saw you in some random way. I'm not sure I would. And yet...maybe I would, in the right context - the right random context.

That would be a good band name. The right random context.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Shit, another xpost.

I miss Beth here too. Maybe we should get her to come to ITR.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Abbott, your perfect party thread has gone nuts, settled down, gone nuts...I'm so befuddled by certain folks insistence on "the Rules!". We have to go back to posting about the RULES, guys!

The RULES for a perfect partY!!!!!! You're not playing fair!!!!!

What rules?

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:40 (fifteen years ago) link

xp I don't know when you're all coming to my house. I hope I'm not buried under 20 piles of books and a bunch of classes when it happens, though. I hate it when I miss the fun parts of my life!

I'd better check out that perfect party thread, too, huh.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

We are going to wisely wait until you graduate so as you can fix up all the busted toes and bloodied noses.

Yours included.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Good point. I'd better stock up on gauze and medical tape in the interim.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 04:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Also ice packs, because they double for swelling and for booze.

Plus, if no-one gets hurt we can all pretend we're MUMMIES!

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 04:54 (fifteen years ago) link

so that wanted movie. huh. not going to rave about it, although there are some points where its great, but most points of it were...not.

FAX ME, Thursday, 21 August 2008 05:00 (fifteen years ago) link

wine was great though! discovering that i prefer a good claret to just about anything else.

FAX ME, Thursday, 21 August 2008 05:01 (fifteen years ago) link

it is my favorite non-fortified kind of wine.

FAX ME, Thursday, 21 August 2008 05:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Drunk.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 August 2008 05:22 (fifteen years ago) link

oh hai

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 06:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Morning.

I am grumpy and wanting a nap. But I'm making notes to have ice packs and apparently claret on hand someday.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 12:33 (fifteen years ago) link

grumpy yes! nap yes! work no! :( :(

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 12:44 (fifteen years ago) link

After I drop J at camp I'm going to get 4lex involved in watching tv or reading a book or playing a video game or SOMETHING and then I'm going to get that nap.

How many more days at that job, tehresa?

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 12:57 (fifteen years ago) link

2!

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 13:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Yay two days! I'm thinking of going to see a movie by myself today. Anything mainstream that's worthwhile?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 21 August 2008 13:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Only two days? Not too bad!

Ms. M, the only movie I've seen in a theater this summer was Wall-E. It was cute. I hope you find something good.

Okay, naptime for me...

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd like to see "Brideshead Revisited" but I don't feel like driving across town to an "art" theater. I might have a bootleg copy of Wall-E from my brother, not sure.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 21 August 2008 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

boss is not here again... wtf. i wish i was home in bed.

i am jealous of your movie time, m!
i have only seen BATMANG this summer.

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:26 (fifteen years ago) link

That might have been all I've seen this summer too. I think I'm not going now though as I've just gotten a last-minute doctor's appt. Seeing movies by yourself in the daytime seems so decadent.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:36 (fifteen years ago) link

WALL-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Seeing movies by yourself in the daytime is probably cheap, though!

I gave up on my nap. Every person in the free world has decided that it Thursday morning is a good time to call us. NO, I don't want to change the times for the kids dental appointments... grrrr.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i finally dropped my app into barnes and noble last night, no bookseller positions available but the goddamn cafe is looking for staff :(

guess a bookstore cafe is better than a dumb restaurant or a starbucks.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought barnes and noble cafes were starbucks?

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

hmmm i don't think so but i could be wrong. it didn't look like a starbucks?

Rubyredd, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link

and i guess cafe work has got to be significantly easier than restaurant work.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:30 (fifteen years ago) link

I hear Starbucks is a fairly decent place to work. They have benefits.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:52 (fifteen years ago) link

I really want to change my username. I'm really not pure misery anymore.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

except for the ones where the employees sued for managers stealing their tips.

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I think I would like to work in a coffee shop, actually. Because COFFEE.

I'm glad you're not pure misery anymore, Ms. M!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:06 (fifteen years ago) link

both of my sisters worked in a coffee shop together. they seemed to enjoy it.

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Do most of you tip at Starbucks? I'm always torn on this one.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I haven't been to a Starbucks in too long to know the answer to this question. I think I failed to tip last time I was at a coffee shop. But I think it's partially a function of almost never using cash. Certainly if there's a cup and I use cash I am happy to throw my change or a dollar in sometimes...

Yeah, I have no idea what the answer to that is.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:12 (fifteen years ago) link

having no cash is often my problem too. Tipping sucks (being unsure when/how much).

Ms Misery, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

you think you've got problems tipping - I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE

Rubyredd, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

so far, i have just let jordan take care of all these matters, but i guess i should learn.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

General rule is 15-20% depending on how much you liked the service. I like 20% because that boils down to "$1 per $5". I also tip $1 per drink when I'm out at a bar.

HI DERE, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:26 (fifteen years ago) link

No, the general rule is do not tip and only go to each place once.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:27 (fifteen years ago) link

oh btw 9 yrs of marriage today ^_^

HI DERE, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Seriously, is what I am not being. Listen to Dan.

AND WOW CONGRATUMALATIONS.
