i'm listening to it for the first time, was expecting to dislike it, based only on the sources and tone of the hype i'm hearing about her, but actually i really like it. is it polite? i have it on *really loud* since i'm home alone in the middle of the day and it kinda kicks actually, some of the beats are pretty tough despite the frippery on top

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

ok man you're totally nuts, this gerry read / t williams / marcel dettmann bit at the end is totally rugged

4.5 / 5

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

Love MJC, looking forward to hearing the mix.

Tim F, Thursday, 12 April 2012 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

it's really really really good

it does take awhile to warm up and there is some tubular bells type mellowness upfront but around the fifth track it starts to get jacking and gets more and more jacking until the end

this is probably my favorite commercial mix i've heard since the elijah and skiliam rinse thing and i keep up on that stuff

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

that's probably not a good comparison

was trying to think of what traditional house mix i've enjoyed this much and i had to go back kind of far, maybe motor city drum ensembles dj kicks, but that's not as housey. the middle of this is really jacking, reminds me of labels like classic but with a lot more space and swing in the beats

Folks, check out Ghilbi: http://ghibli.bandcamp.com/album/2011

I'd love to hear thoughts about this dude.

heiswagger (rennavate), Thursday, 12 April 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

DL'ed the Ghilbi thing awhile back, dude really needs to take it easy with the harsh eq's and dynamics processing. There are some cool ideas on the album but it's impossible to listen to because it's brickwalled to shit.

All Flowers Must Fade, Thursday, 12 April 2012 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

what is brick-walled?

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

i am assuming it means the waveform is one huge solid rectangle because its what it sounds like, and i agree, the idea seems pretty good if basic (its just bangalter-style filter house?) but i just want to turn it off

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:38 (twelve years ago) link

brickwalled usually means compressed so that everything is max volume and/or clipping all over the place

mh, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

btw audible clipping... well, I am sure it has been used as snd or Mark Fell solo or someone else as a cool effect, but it is bullllshiiiit

mh, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

That's a fair point about the Ghibli. All of it is sampled from YouTubes, which is probably a big reason for its shitty mastering.

heiswagger (rennavate), Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

even so, just turning down the gain when mastering the track would probably help matters

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:46 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, it's partially a gain issue, and partially the fact that there's a filter people for some reason select that maximizes

mh, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

In his defense, 2011 is "just a bunch of demos and beats that weren't mastered or anything," in his own words. Any mastering issues thus make sense. I think the songs that can be streamed from his upcoming album, Rare Pleasures, are a better indication of what he can do with a proper mix and master: http://ghibli.bandcamp.com/ I think "Sixteen Moons" is quite good.

Magic Mountain High is Move D + Juju and Jordash.

dsb, Friday, 13 April 2012 04:26 (twelve years ago) link

Liked that one!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 13 April 2012 04:49 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks for the Trax stuff upthread. Liking the Shadow Dancer track a lot (and the magic mountain + puzique tracks above).

So, my trip to Berlin didn't come off this weekend. Although Berghain did eventually publish set times on its website. Dettmann was on 8am-11am on the Saturday morning which is about the worst time imaginable, for me anyway.

Currently enjoying every track on H2's frequency of life ep, especially these ones

That Huxley track is great, kinda outdoes Lee Foss at his own game.

that tom trago album is an ENDLESS GOLDMINE of dope mixes ... actually, that album is an endless goldmine of dope original tracks ... in retrospect and as more people hear it i think it will def go down as one of the all-time great house albums, up there in the ranks with PANSOUL and MAHOGANY BROWN

the late great, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

Big praise! Love Tom Trago sounds.

andrew m., Tuesday, 17 April 2012 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

big up tom trago

i was actually very disappointed w/ iris compared to voyage direct, but that's almost certainly down to the fact that i am really into house and not much into neo-soul at all

the late great, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

Had a gig with huxley last week, he played a really annoying song near the end which spoiled the set, booze has erased what it was

straightola, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 11:56 (twelve years ago) link

this mix is quite refined, but good: http://soundcloud.com/mikehuckaby/xlr8r-podcast

I was expecting someone to do that because I'm not familiar with the system here and I don't think I'll be ready to count all those votes :s

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 03:05 (twelve years ago) link

ok sure

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 03:20 (twelve years ago) link

Just listening to that Ewan Pearson mix. There's something about his mixes which I love, despite a lot of the tracks in isolation being ones I would probably avoid like the plague if I heard them, he's very talented weaving together a unified sound.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 19 April 2012 11:18 (twelve years ago) link

his dj set a few years ago was probably the best clubbing experience I've ever experienced.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 11:36 (twelve years ago) link

Having said that the Carl Craig Remix of 'Use Me Again' is pointless to begin with, and is made even worse by the mixing with the bleeps.

listening to levon's fabric now. some transitions could be a little more seamless don't you think? http://soundcloud.com/fabric/fabric-63-levon-vincent

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 08:03 (twelve years ago) link

not sure about the flow either..

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 08:19 (twelve years ago) link

Which transitions in particular? I've only had it on a couple of times when I've been working and can remember there being some sudden shifts in mood, but I can't remember hearing anything I would call a trainwreck.

coal, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:48 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not saying there's a trainwreck but some transitions are just too fast and sudden, like track 1 to track 2. And the flow isn't so hot either. Maybe this is what happens when you plan to make a mix with your and your friends' tracks only.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 08:54 (twelve years ago) link

To be fair, I think that's just how he mixes records, at least that's how he DJed when I saw him, although I wasn't so hot on it then either.

EDB, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:57 (twelve years ago) link

When I've seen him DJ in clubs I haven't got into him, but I've been liking this mix a lot. As someone who almost always goes for a long blend by default when mixing myself - and sometimes wishes I had the guts to just slam them next tune in, I always like to hear people mixing the other way and going for those 80s style quick transitions, they're what I found most interesting in people like Mala or Michael Mayer.

http://soundcloud.com/r_co/cassy-artist-of-the-week-sl

two unknown beauties at 36:00 and 43:00. This is why I'm afraid of listening to mixes with no tracklisting.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 09:50 (twelve years ago) link

Really want Levon Vincent's Rainstorm II to get a release, what a track.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 20 April 2012 11:04 (twelve years ago) link

God, I've listened to that xxxy track like 30 times now. It's like eating pure sugar, and I can't stop.

EDB, Friday, 20 April 2012 22:55 (twelve years ago) link

cassy's sets produce some serious grooves but damn if she isn't static. it's like watching a robot or statue.
