i put enough y's in her name above to make up for any omissions below

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Thursday, 12 April 2012 05:50 (twelve years ago) link

I will continue to watch this as it was fine; actually it was reminiscent of my reaction to Happy Endings before they hit their stride, so if this finds a groove I think it will kill

I also think people are completely misreading the thesis of the show if they think the pilot blows it; a show about a woman torturing her stupid roommate would get very tired very quickly, whereas a show where the "mean girl" learns how to relate to another woman while the wide-eyed innocent shows she isn't as wide-eyed or innocent as she appears may not be "zomg ORIGINAL" but it at least has someplace to go where you aren't automatically cast in the position of despising one of the leads for either their rampant, unrelenting meanness or their mind-boggling, irritating stupidity.

yeah totally

deejeridoo (some dude), Thursday, 12 April 2012 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

i guess i'd be more kind if i didn't find 75% of the jokes terrible (to be fair, the other 25% were hilarious).

I have no intention of plugging the antenna back in and watching this, but that ratio is a good one for every sitcom ever that's below the dozen or so classics.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 April 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

in a lot of ways it falls flat but there's a definite kernel of something unique and promising in there and now and again there'll be a great line out of nowhere like "anyone wanna get weird and play Mario Kart?"
yeah, this

i'll keep giving this a chance, Ritter is good enough to potentially carry it, but hopefully the other girl has more going on character-wise. i was not as into the van der beek stuff

Nhex, Friday, 13 April 2012 02:21 (twelve years ago) link

so.

I thought ep 2 was much funnier than ep 1

I need new, hip khakis (DJP), Thursday, 19 April 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

I'm surprised how much I dug this, both episodes

da croupier, Sunday, 22 April 2012 11:41 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't like last night's episode at all. Ritter was too hateable, other girl was too manic. Van Der Beek's bits with Kiernan Shipka were funny, though...especially the tag at the end.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

Ritter's tightrope walk of hateable/relatable(/smashable) is the show's greatest strength imo

"Clear my schedule!"
"It's been clear for weeks."

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:38 (eleven years ago) link

the foster child thing felt very overdone to me, as a gag. also lol overachieving neurotic woman tries to do too much and flips out also a bit too played.

s.clover, Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

1st ep >> 2nd ep >>>>>>>>>>>>> 3rd ep

That's not a good trajectory imo.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i mean it's always been kinda doomed tbh, i'm just getting whatever enjoyment i can out of the ride. still mystified that this show has its own thread.

✧✧✧✧✧✧@are.forever (some dude), Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

i am mystified that you are mystified.

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 26 April 2012 21:12 (eleven years ago) link

i just liked riter from breaking bad and am a sucker for meta stuff like the van der beek thing, and i start threads about stuff i like, sorry if i broke ILX shitty sitcom protocol

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Thursday, 26 April 2012 21:15 (eleven years ago) link

this show is stupid, but dammit, i do love Krysten Ritter in this. feels like a more "it's always sunny"-fied version of New Girl

still not really on board with the van der beek thing, but i did love that indiana jones joke from the second ep

Nhex, Monday, 30 April 2012 02:07 (eleven years ago) link

I think of gr8080 as ILX's van der Beek

(tho his head looks less like a mailbox)

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Monday, 30 April 2012 02:10 (eleven years ago) link

Ok I really liked this ep. Managed to find myself pretty consistently surprised by the twists. The writing kept things fast paced. I found myself accidentally narrating the action outloud like a young child or something, just sort of to help myself keep up. The humor is still broad and "edgy" not at all like the character-driven stuff ilx/avclub tends to go for.

s.clover, Thursday, 3 May 2012 02:40 (eleven years ago) link

yeah def best one to date

Neil Young’s social media channels (some dude), Thursday, 3 May 2012 02:42 (eleven years ago) link

still haven't watched this, but it looks like there's a chance it's gonna be an either/or situation with this and Happy Endings for renewal.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Thursday, 3 May 2012 02:43 (eleven years ago) link

HE should and will arise victorious

Neil Young’s social media channels (some dude), Thursday, 3 May 2012 02:58 (eleven years ago) link

i seriously doubt this will be renewed, but then again i never expected Happy Endings to come back, let alone be the best new sitcom of the year, so what the hell do i know about ABC execs

Nhex, Thursday, 3 May 2012 03:09 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah, i like this show... i wish they would kinda just let the B be a B without having every episode give her a face turn, but eh

Nhex, Thursday, 3 May 2012 03:10 (eleven years ago) link

xpost

what the hell do i know about ABC execs

They have an unwavering faith in Tim Allen.

At this point I think she's like less a B than just a self-involved narcissist with the attention span of a gnat. Which is a much more fun character.

s.clover, Thursday, 3 May 2012 04:12 (eleven years ago) link

massive lol at this last night

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 4 May 2012 00:30 (eleven years ago) link

i honestly wasn't sure if that was real or something they made up

Nhex, Friday, 4 May 2012 02:08 (eleven years ago) link

yeah bro you can't put anything out in to the world anymore without a launch party

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:23 (eleven years ago) link

Someone in the AV Club comments called this show out as a live-action pastiche of American Dad with Chloe as the Roger character and that image has really stuck in my head, particularly with Ritter's semi-gangly body language.

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:38 (eleven years ago) link

oh it's really mean to compare this show to american dad

Neil Young’s social media channels (some dude), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:43 (eleven years ago) link

maybe it'll be as good as american dad at some point, but it'll take some time

Nhex, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:17 (eleven years ago) link

five months pass...

http://www.avclub.com/articles/michael-bolton-to-star-in-abc-sitcom-as-himself-wh,86638/

woah guys! michael bolton! playing himself! i think this whole celebrity-playing-unflattering-version-of-themselves meta thing might finally go semi-mainstream soon!

some dude, Sunday, 14 October 2012 01:18 (eleven years ago) link

i know it's been discussed on other threads, i just wanted to troll gr80's thread again

y was there an ep of this sponsored by ppl magazine

johnny crunch, Sunday, 25 November 2012 00:28 (eleven years ago) link

show has been pretty funny lately, feel like it's hitting its stride

The Doc Morbama (some dude), Sunday, 25 November 2012 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

thanksgiving episode really delivered. they're walking a line between either humanizing ritter too much or just making her increasingly terrible (or just leaving her be and having the character end up one-note), but for now they're pulling it off. it's like if you built a whole show around kramer subplots.

s.clover, Sunday, 25 November 2012 00:55 (eleven years ago) link

well, bcz Quell doesnt remember it

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 November 2012 02:54 (eleven years ago) link

So _Vamps_ is a really good film, and Ritter is perfect for it.

s.clover, Sunday, 9 December 2012 01:18 (eleven years ago) link

four weeks pass...

"You from Queens"

in other news, both this and happy endings seem like their ratings are pretty bad and they could be cancelled.

s.clover, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 05:21 (eleven years ago) link

yeah they're both in burn-off mode, i think off the schedule by march
