def not remotely as good as New Girl

Zooey has better delivery and comedic timing than every single person on Apt. 23 except for maaaaybe Ritter.

i guess i'd be more kind if i didn't find 75% of the jokes terrible (to be fair, the other 25% were hilarious). these meta Dawson jokes weren't really that funny the first time Kevin Smith used them in Jay & Silent Bob and much less so in 2012.

haha this show should have a 'based on character created by Kevin Smith' credit

lol

these network shows that can't get away with edgy titles with swear words in them but keep desperately hanging onto half-assed versions of them like "bleep my dad says" are just sad imo. they should've just called this show Apartment 23, which is probably what it'll get shortened to if it ever survives two seasons.

deejeridoo (some dude), Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:31 (twelve years ago) link

It was originally Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23, then Apartment 23, then Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23.

The pilot of this may be a better single episode than the last episode of New Girl. New Girl is easily the better show overall though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:50 (twelve years ago) link

i'm aware, jaymc.

did anyone point out that bryan cranston was actually in a commercial for this, saying something about wanting to murder kristen ritter

am watching all the family-themed ABC sitcoms on the lead-up. haven't watched a sitcom other than 30 rock or the office in years. they're fun. and weird.

suburgatory girl looks a bit like emma stone

yeah "Suburgatory" is good. i take "Modern Family" for granted but it's still pretty decent.

i'm aware, jaymc.

Sorry, your post read like you came up with the idea for the truncated title.

yeah it's no tim & eric huh

It totally wasn't! Disappointing.

DRANGUS (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:09 (twelve years ago) link

well i mean, it was obviously just Apartment 23 back when this thread was started

Yeah, like I said over in the ABC Tuesday night thread, I don't particularly care for any of the shows much (except for Happy Endings, which it's a shame you missed), but I think the majority of the actors on the shows are really decent comedic actors, and everyone seems to be having a good time. Let the kids have their fun and their laughs, eh? Why not!

DRANGUS (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:12 (twelve years ago) link

yeah a lot of these shows are definitely a triumph of casting over material

deejeridoo (some dude), Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:14 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, suburgatory was clearly getting by on charm, but i was into it. would watch again.

not sure what to make of modern family. it's good, but seems like something you'd have to get the hang of. lot of implied relationship history.

The Rittery regime is responsible for some pretty heinous atrocities in Central America, so yeah

show was pretty ok. hard to discern the good/bad through the cute, but i liked van der beek, liked the cheerfully sleazy goings-on. much better than that one episode of new girl i watched yesterday. no idea whether i'll ever watch any of these shows again.

I will continue to watch this as it was fine; actually it was reminiscent of my reaction to Happy Endings before they hit their stride, so if this finds a groove I think it will kill

I also think people are completely misreading the thesis of the show if they think the pilot blows it; a show about a woman torturing her stupid roommate would get very tired very quickly, whereas a show where the "mean girl" learns how to relate to another woman while the wide-eyed innocent shows she isn't as wide-eyed or innocent as she appears may not be "zomg ORIGINAL" but it at least has someplace to go where you aren't automatically cast in the position of despising one of the leads for either their rampant, unrelenting meanness or their mind-boggling, irritating stupidity.

I have no intention of plugging the antenna back in and watching this, but that ratio is a good one for every sitcom ever that's below the dozen or so classics.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 April 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

in a lot of ways it falls flat but there's a definite kernel of something unique and promising in there and now and again there'll be a great line out of nowhere like "anyone wanna get weird and play Mario Kart?"
yeah, this

i'll keep giving this a chance, Ritter is good enough to potentially carry it, but hopefully the other girl has more going on character-wise. i was not as into the van der beek stuff

da croupier, Sunday, 22 April 2012 11:41 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't like last night's episode at all. Ritter was too hateable, other girl was too manic. Van Der Beek's bits with Kiernan Shipka were funny, though...especially the tag at the end.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

Ritter's tightrope walk of hateable/relatable(/smashable) is the show's greatest strength imo

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:38 (eleven years ago) link

the foster child thing felt very overdone to me, as a gag. also lol overachieving neurotic woman tries to do too much and flips out also a bit too played.

s.clover, Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

1st ep >> 2nd ep >>>>>>>>>>>>> 3rd ep

That's not a good trajectory imo.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 April 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i mean it's always been kinda doomed tbh, i'm just getting whatever enjoyment i can out of the ride. still mystified that this show has its own thread.

i just liked riter from breaking bad and am a sucker for meta stuff like the van der beek thing, and i start threads about stuff i like, sorry if i broke ILX shitty sitcom protocol

this show is stupid, but dammit, i do love Krysten Ritter in this. feels like a more "it's always sunny"-fied version of New Girl

still not really on board with the van der beek thing, but i did love that indiana jones joke from the second ep

Nhex, Monday, 30 April 2012 02:07 (eleven years ago) link

I think of gr8080 as ILX's van der Beek

(tho his head looks less like a mailbox)

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Monday, 30 April 2012 02:10 (eleven years ago) link

Ok I really liked this ep. Managed to find myself pretty consistently surprised by the twists. The writing kept things fast paced. I found myself accidentally narrating the action outloud like a young child or something, just sort of to help myself keep up. The humor is still broad and "edgy" not at all like the character-driven stuff ilx/avclub tends to go for.

still haven't watched this, but it looks like there's a chance it's gonna be an either/or situation with this and Happy Endings for renewal.

Neil Young’s social media channels (some dude), Thursday, 3 May 2012 02:58 (eleven years ago) link

i seriously doubt this will be renewed, but then again i never expected Happy Endings to come back, let alone be the best new sitcom of the year, so what the hell do i know about ABC execs

Nhex, Thursday, 3 May 2012 03:09 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah, i like this show... i wish they would kinda just let the B be a B without having every episode give her a face turn, but eh
