The bus was.. Okay :) Waiting for E right now, exciting!! I don't think 40 is a problem - more me trying to think of friends who might move! Most of my friends are mid 30s but all partnered up and condoed down.

I realize now that my natural state for walking around streets IS to smile, trying to keep a game face on haha. Aimless I will beam in the airport's general direction!

Thanks! And good luck with finding a great apartment situation within your budget, ffm.

I think the big thing about cities that erodes friendliness is just the sheer number of people you have to deal with on a casual nod and smile basis. At a certain point, it becomes trying and tiresome and beyond that point it advances past frantic to plain impossible. It's not really that big city people are less capable of friendly smiles; it just gets squeezed out of them by circumstances.

I will only leave my current apartment for a house! I'll squat if I must. Heh.

Will be dropping into TO at the end of May/start of June for a conference (an I'm-gonna-study-this-stuff one, not a current-work one)... too early to look for a place, but in any case just found out I won't hear about the grad school housing I applied to till the end of June.

3 weeks pass...

so it figures! Sister needs a roommate for July 1. But she's looking for someone student age/you would probably be driven nuts living with her anyway (I love her.. but yeah. Little sisters.)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 10 May 2012 20:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

but I did share it on FB just now if you want to take a look ;)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 10 May 2012 20:01 (1 year ago) Permalink

Thanks! I can't see it on FB for some reason? I think I may drive a young and fun person crazy though :-(

ljubljana, Thursday, 10 May 2012 21:06 (1 year ago) Permalink

You could level each other out ;) Maybe on my profile you can see it? (on phone rn, on streetcar!)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 10 May 2012 21:12 (1 year ago) Permalink

No I don't see it - but don't worry - I honestly think I'm probably best enjoyed by the late 20s and up crowd :-) I really appreciate you thinking of it though!

ljubljana, Thursday, 10 May 2012 21:25 (1 year ago) Permalink

:D only listing I've seen, so thought I'd mention it. Completely understood though!

3 weeks pass...

I am here, at a conference that is blowing my mind with the enormity of the decision to back to school... Heading back home tomorrow night. Wasn't organised enough to even ask about FAP but if anyone is interested my megabus isn't till 11.30pm.... but plan A is to hit a movie - any recommendations for good downtown theaters not a million miles from the Coach Terminal?

ljubljana, Saturday, 2 June 2012 01:45 (11 months ago) Permalink

Moving up this coming Thursday from Mtl. Anxious!

Simon H., Saturday, 2 June 2012 02:20 (11 months ago) Permalink

The Carlton is close to the terminal.

Ò (Ówen P.), Saturday, 2 June 2012 02:58 (11 months ago) Permalink

thanks - might see Monsieur Lazhar.

Glad you liked it!

Toronto is a good place to be!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 2 June 2012 03:33 (11 months ago) Permalink

I guess I may as well ask here: best cheap eats in Koreatown and/or the Annex? That's where I'm headed.

Simon H., Saturday, 2 June 2012 03:42 (11 months ago) Permalink

There are millions of restaurants around there, I'm not very sure.. I tend to get pizza or pub hamburgers ;)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 2 June 2012 14:45 (11 months ago) Permalink

Buk Chang Dong for Korean, A+. I eat there once a week.

Ò (Ówen P.), Saturday, 2 June 2012 15:39 (11 months ago) Permalink

I was passing through the Toronto airport just last Monday, but most of the eating establishments I saw there were either Tim Hortons and Coyote Jacks. (frowny face)

Aimless, Saturday, 2 June 2012 16:23 (11 months ago) Permalink

I've never heard of CJ... There's a Wolfgang Puck's & Starbucks in t1 for future reference :)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 2 June 2012 16:25 (11 months ago) Permalink

Head on out to Pearson airport and buy a ticket for somewhere so you can pass through security. Once inside you may experience the wonder that is Coyote Jack... if you dare!

Aimless, Saturday, 2 June 2012 16:33 (11 months ago) Permalink

Or you could just go to Facebook and check it out.

[impassioned defence of Tim Horton's]

poxen, Saturday, 2 June 2012 16:43 (11 months ago) Permalink

Pearson is soo far.. I'll stick to the crappy fast food I know and love. (And I do love me some Timmie's!)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 2 June 2012 22:32 (11 months ago) Permalink

I had my first Tim H's this morning! Breakfast sandwich with egg and ham on the English muffin. When I arrive for real maybe I'll branch out to the biscuit.

On the overnight bus back from Toronto to DC the only people talking were immediately behind me, and I was riveted. Two kids, a girl and a guy, who didn't know each other, introducing themselves to one another - it was a great refresher on the Things on the Minds of Today's Yoof. Lots lots of awkward stuff where I could tell what one of them was thinking about what the other one just said even though I couldn't see either of them. She wouldn't stop interrogating him - there would be a silence during which she was clearly thinking of something else to say and then she'd go for it ('what is your favourite drink?') She also started talking on the phone to her friend in a British accent and asked her new companion how good this sounded, and I just had to turn around and say it was pretty good (it was). She nearly lost her mind with excitement at discovering my Britisherness and it turns out that imitating British accents and trying to get really good at it is A Thing amongst 21-year olds in Denver. Anyway, she was lovely really (even if she then wouldn't stop making me say things) and I was glad I sat near them.

Awww! Rest assured I will make you say things over our inevitable future pint. And perhaps you will find the way I pronounce things as charming as ENBB did. I think I had her say 'wicked smaht' for me.

My Timmie's sandwich of choice is the sausage and egg one, on the English muffin. The biscuit is delicious but you can just about feel your arteries harden, it's so greasy.

Don't worry, you'll learn how putrid Tim Horton's is in time enough.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 18:41 (11 months ago) Permalink

(You'll learn to dodge these types quickly. Everyone's over everything in Toronto.)

Tim Horton's Camp Day! This day is special to me because my underpriveleged sister got sent to camp about 12 years ago on this organization's dime. If you're around, it's worth donating!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 13:54 (11 months ago) Permalink

Everything is over anyways, but that's no excuse for ubiquitous low quality cafe chains and kitsch-laden symbols of Canadian nationalism.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 23:15 (11 months ago) Permalink

I like cheap coffee. And camp day. What do you recommend? I brew coffee at home, but have Second Cup, Starbucks, Timothy's & Druxy's around the office for when the thermos isn't enough. I default to Druxy's when I don't want to walk in the rain/snow to Tim's.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 23:42 (11 months ago) Permalink

Well, I wouldn't recommend a chain, is the thing.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Thursday, 7 June 2012 08:24 (11 months ago) Permalink

So I should ride the subway & hop a streetcar down to Kensington? :)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 7 June 2012 11:29 (11 months ago) Permalink

Maybe the Mom and Pop Korean place makes coffee.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 7 June 2012 11:29 (11 months ago) Permalink

I'm not even thinking of it in a corporate sense, but in a strictly quality sense.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Thursday, 7 June 2012 12:08 (11 months ago) Permalink

Everyone hesitates before confessing their favourite coffee

Ò (Ówen P.), Thursday, 7 June 2012 12:21 (11 months ago) Permalink

Hah! I don't, even when it opens me to ridicule. But my palette is not sophisticated enough to distinguish between the lovingly brewed grounds of Noir or the Only cafe.. so I just stick with what's easy, nearby and doesn't cost me more than (ideally) $1.50.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 7 June 2012 13:11 (11 months ago) Permalink

Ha, it wasn't meant to be a personal accusation! Typical of Toronto is when people put down a coffee shop b/c of its scene rather than its product. Thus, hesitation, like, "what does my coffee shop say about me?" Even now I hesitate to confess that I'll bike 3km up to Sam James on a weekend.

I had heard a couple of times that Tim Horton's offered a very generous employment scheme, with stock options for their floor workers and so forth, but hadn't done any investigation... does anybody know about this?

Ò (Ówen P.), Thursday, 7 June 2012 13:36 (11 months ago) Permalink

I've heard that in Alberta they get paid like $15/hr, but Alberta is a different story...

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Thursday, 7 June 2012 13:37 (11 months ago) Permalink

From what I know they do get medical and dental, and there may be some sort of education/trainingopportunities people can take advantage. And like I said upthread, my sister was one of the disadvantaged kids selected to go to camp in Alberta and that was so very A++ in my eyes.

Never been to Sam James. I rarely drink coffee beyond 10AM and I'm rarely anywhere but at home, work or brunch before 10AM. However I do appreciate a good cappucino.. there's a place on College near Grace which my husband took me to on our first date & many times after until we moved in together (& up to St Clair.) I'd like to go there again, actually..

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 7 June 2012 13:53 (11 months ago) Permalink

Lit. It was recommended to me as "a place filled with the hottest boys" and I rolled my eyes at the time

Ò (Ówen P.), Thursday, 7 June 2012 14:01 (11 months ago) Permalink

Not Lit.. although that's a pretty funny selling point for coffee.. :) I was thinking of this place: http://www.yelp.ca/biz/riviera-bakery-toronto-2
