'sleepyhead' off the new strawberry whiplash album is a cute little MBV rip

Love the newer Novella stuff. Pretty good live too. Although 'Don't Believe Ayn Rand' has a chorus that I can't help but mishear as 'cheese, sausage roll' (it's 'she's lost control).

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 15 April 2012 12:43 (twelve years ago) link

that toy track is pretty good but gosh they are an awkward looking bunch. straight out of my junior high school talent show. be better without the intro.

keythhtyek, Sunday, 15 April 2012 22:56 (twelve years ago) link

heard a new Allo Darlin' track on the radio yesterday. Sounded pretty good. Anyone heard the album?

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

Pitchfork gushed over it. Usually their acceptable definition of indiepop is something turgid like summer hymns so that review is a surprise.

keythhtyek, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 00:43 (eleven years ago) link

i disliked the opening single (though liked the b-side) and slumberland/fortuna pop have yet again conspired to ensure i can't get it off emusic so i don't think i'll be hearing it in a hurry

real 69 for my sham friends (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 00:55 (eleven years ago) link

i love them. i am sure i will love the album when i hear it.

keythhtyek, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 02:38 (eleven years ago) link

going to go see them live in a week or so!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 03:29 (eleven years ago) link

listening now, more substantial production, still utterly charming, smart and terrific. my one tax refund splurge.

keythhtyek, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 04:00 (eleven years ago) link

ah i just worked out that school song 'never thought i'd see the day' rips the melody from 'let your freak flag fly' by the hummingbirds

ringo deathstarr pledge drive

62% of their goal in under 2 days. these guys have some pretty serious fans.

beer in heaven (electricsound), Friday, 20 April 2012 02:05 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I wonder why...

emil.y, Friday, 20 April 2012 02:08 (eleven years ago) link

i pledged, but only for the demo package. the 'make us cover a song of your choice' option went in like 15 minutes

beer in heaven (electricsound), Friday, 20 April 2012 02:11 (eleven years ago) link

i would have made them do i kill everything i fuck fwiw

beer in heaven (electricsound), Friday, 20 April 2012 02:12 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, good choice. Though I doubt the ilxor's cover of that could ever be bettered.

I'd have made them cover 'I'm a Terrible Vacuous Imbecile Who Uses My Body to Sell My Mediocre Records'. I'd have to write it first, obviously.

emil.y, Friday, 20 April 2012 02:24 (eleven years ago) link

of this story i am thankfully unaware. dandy warhols related?

beer in heaven (electricsound), Friday, 20 April 2012 02:25 (eleven years ago) link

ok now i know. seems.... pointless.

beer in heaven (electricsound), Friday, 20 April 2012 02:31 (eleven years ago) link

Weird Dreams "Choreography" album is a total joy, tasty indiepop goodness

beer in heaven (electricsound), Friday, 20 April 2012 06:40 (eleven years ago) link

i wonder if elizabeth darlin' has been listening to the hummingbirds a lot for this latest record

the sunno)))boys (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 00:12 (eleven years ago) link

have i already raved about rex or regina on this thread? their ep is utterly gorgeous

is this thread title a lfo reference?

i'm really that Sennen song, i liked their last album but this sounds nothing like that. interested in hearing this album now.

loving the Now, Now album so much

suburban buttshaven cannibal (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 06:21 (eleven years ago) link

woo some stuff i produced is coming out on two of my fave tweeish indie labels ^_^

suburban buttshaven cannibal (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

Congratulations. I actually went and looked up Summer Cats on Slumberland's page to see if that was what you were doing, but they are listed as past artists and I can't think of any other tweeish Melbourne bands.

svend, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 02:21 (eleven years ago) link

it does involve at least one summer cat

suburban buttshaven cannibal (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 02:33 (eleven years ago) link

Is there any news from SULK? Still really enjoying their two singles and would love to hear more. Their website doesn't seem to hint at much more than touring at this point.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 14:12 (eleven years ago) link

they finished recording their album a few weeks ago, not sure if it's going to be self-released like the singles or if they're approaching labels..

suburban buttshaven cannibal (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

turns out the cats on fire album is vastly better than their earlier stuff. pretty nice.

the aower of aussy (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 00:19 (eleven years ago) link

i agree. although, i think all of their albums are pretty nice. the lovesliescrushing reissue or first issue of their early recordings or whatever is really gorgeous.

keythhtyek, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 02:24 (eleven years ago) link

wtf @ this sub-lucksmiths drivel that allo darlin are passing off as lyrics

12plsrU (electricsound), Friday, 11 May 2012 00:13 (eleven years ago) link

Hmmm...it' s pretty great actually.

keythhtyek, Friday, 11 May 2012 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

i hate the lyrics on this record. they're genuinely awful.

12plsrU (electricsound), Friday, 11 May 2012 01:12 (eleven years ago) link

I tend of swing between cringing and loving Allo Darlin' lyrics. They're more of a guilty pleasure than most stuff I regularly listen to. The first album had its bland out moments but could still frequently make me feel giddy. Haven't given the newie much time.

Anyone here diggin' Joanna Gruesome? Their EP, and new track on a split on Art Is Hard Records are pretty great.

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Friday, 11 May 2012 08:40 (eleven years ago) link

tbf it's really only two songs that piss me off lyrically - "europe" and "tallulah".. they come across like the typical expatriate australian who believes they've 'outgrown' their country and the people in it, while the whole album steals completely from the go betweens, the lucksmiths and the hummingbirds.

12plsrU (electricsound), Friday, 11 May 2012 10:20 (eleven years ago) link

it's always australians who write these sort of dreadful lyrics, i can never work out why.

12plsrU (electricsound), Friday, 11 May 2012 10:22 (eleven years ago) link

I really like 'Tallulah', I think it's more an age thing rather than an expatriate thing. She's late 20s and feels like her life's path has been determined. I don't think it's particularly disparaging of Australia (in so far as I've noticed anyway).

I like the increasing Go-Btwns influence, that's what makes 'Capricornia' one of the best things they've done whilst being less playful than some of their previous singles.

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Friday, 11 May 2012 10:45 (eleven years ago) link

isn't 'tallulah' about finding a small piece of home anywhere? almost a recognition that even though she's far away, australia is always a part of her and the bit 'and i wonder if you'll wanna go over there with me, when i'm finished over here' seems like pining for home. she hardly seems the type to get worked up over.

the school album is ok but i am starting to think that 'let it slip' was a one off moment of pop perfection, they are capable of cute but not much more.

keythhtyek, Saturday, 12 May 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EySm81Q6qIU

this isn't really new, but i think i had heard a couple of citizens! songs before and they didn't appeal at all (i'm remembering them being very kitsune-y, which generally has a maximum of two minutes' appeal for me), yet this i'm liking a lot.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 14 May 2012 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

i'm really enjoying the lissy trullie lp

mexican sumner (electricsound), Thursday, 17 May 2012 03:42 (eleven years ago) link
