i heard 'king of hearts' at the gym the other day and it sounded good, if still a bit swedish
i need to listen to it again

the One Direction joint is the token teenpop single i'm gonna be obnoxiously repping all year in opposition to "Call Me Maybe" and "Boyfriend" btw
― some dude, Tuesday, April 10, 2012 5:38 PM Bookmark
both those are way better than fucking One Direction.

i mean i already said my opinion is obnoxious because it's quickly become contrary enough to popular opinion to be looked at as a challop

which one direction song? "what makes you beautiful" was uh well-crafted i guess, the others i found pretty unmemorable
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 10:08 (1 year ago) Permalink
gotta hand it to them though, despite having taken little to no interest in one direction for the 1.5 years they've existed i somehow now know all their names and which ones they are and possibly may have opinions on each
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 10:09 (1 year ago) Permalink
yeah "what makes" is the one that's doing ok in the u.s.
― some dude, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 12:55 (1 year ago) Permalink
one of one direction's best-received x factor performances was "only girl in the world" - while there are more obvious musical ref points for "what makes you beautiful" i feel its success has a lot to do with capturing something of the same spirit (it creates the same relationship between performer and listener)
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:21 (1 year ago) Permalink
(uh yeah they changed the lyrics to "i'm gonna make you feel like the only girl in the world" or something obv)
(can't remember what they did with the "want you to love me like i'm a hot guy" line)
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:22 (1 year ago) Permalink
(IS it "hot guy" in the original? i never worked out whether people who said it was "hot pie" were joking or not)
it's "hot ride"
"call me maybe" has really nothingy verses, but damn that chorus is great
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:23 (1 year ago) Permalink
hot ride!!!! i never ever thought of that. god that's such a boring lyric compared to "hot guy" or "hot pie" and tbh far less effective a metaphor for the strength of my feelings
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:25 (1 year ago) Permalink
I know!
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:33 (1 year ago) Permalink
hang on are we sure it's not "hot guy" in the original? cuz i listened back to the one direction x factor cover and they change that line to "want you to love me like i'm a hot guy"
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Thursday, 12 April 2012 07:50 (1 year ago) Permalink
Isn't "hot ride" kinda dirty if you're Irish?
― curtains will become your drapes (Ówen P.), Thursday, 12 April 2012 12:15 (1 year ago) Permalink

i heard it on the radio a couple nights ago. it's basically what you'd expect from them and redone. it's not as good as "on the floor"

some worthwhile thoughts
La Roux @larouxofficial"Call me maybe" is that a lyric?? I can't tell who anyone on the radio Is anymore its just noise. Sorry but where has all the music gone?
La Roux @larouxofficialI am perfectly aware I will be slated for saying that but I'm genuinely worried for music.
La Roux @larouxofficialI love radio as a medium I just wish I could listen to it

"Call Me Maybe" is actually a great title/lyric. I get what the whole story is about in just those three words. Call me (maybe), Elly Jackson, when you write something half as clever.

abchris ;) @Fergyyy_@larouxofficial some of your lyrics are crap. I wouldnt be saying that....
La Roux @larouxofficial@Fergyyy_ at least I didn't get a team of people to write them
ugh this is the one that pisses me off the most
― teledyldonix, Saturday, 21 April 2012 16:11 (1 year ago) Permalink
so i guess she thinks carly stole a writing credit on that song then
like, not that that should even matter to any non-idiot

yeah seriously. there isn't even anything inherently wrong with songs written by teams of professional songwriters, but i find it equally amusing and infuriating that elly jackson often criticizes songs like "call me maybe" and "love story" by suggesting that they were written a lot of people (which, oops, neither song was). the most annoying thing about elly is that to someone who has never heard any of the horrible things she routinely says, she might appear to be someone who's trying to break down stereotypes about women in the music industry, when in reality she buys into these stereotypes probably even more than your average misogynist (and sees herself as some noble exception that proves the rule). the aggravating suggestion that i get from that tweet is something along the lines of: if you're a young(-looking) female artist who scores a catchy hit that appeals to other young people, it's because it was shamelessly written, tweaked and manufactured (my favorite anti-pop scare word) by a team of songwriters who just want to take money from stupid, uncritical children.

re: CRJ - the weird 'think she's a teenager playacting at being older' despite being two years older than me vibe rev was picking up on might be - in part - because the teenpop-pier direction is a newer one for her?
the first album post Canadian Idol iirc was a bit more folk-pop.

and call me maybe started off that way also - as an acoustic number - before Josh Ramsay (Marianas Trench) dude pumped it up into disco strings and emo guitars

i dunno, it's as much about the way she looks as what she sings.
as far as "call me maybe" goes, it's the strings that make the song

V-Car was 21-22 when her big song hit and everyone was shocked by how 'old' she was, so i can see why Jepsen seeming even younger and being 26 is blowing people's minds
