i like both iaora tahiti and vulvaland and own them, sold my copy of autoditacker, might buy it back BUT i also went and saw them on their tour w/ the live drummer and it was deeply embarrassing watching a room full of like sea and cake fans do the fug to this

That tune is from the 00s though.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but the germ of that tune was there in the 90s

the part reflects the whole DO YOU SEE

I agree that MoM took a deep dive downwards in the turn of the decade, but the stuff between Vulvaland and Glam is unfuckable-with (and Niun Niggung has its moments too).

i kinda tune out after autoditacker but i agree, the first couple albums are pretty great in their own way

it's just too ... slight (?) for my liking, kinda like audio wallpaper or a poor man's atom heart

the late great, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

Haha, that's funny, because "audio wallpaper" is how I'd describe Autechre. After the initial, more technoish tunes (which I actually like), they just went overtly abstract, like some pointless geometric patterns on a wall. I can admire how their tunes are constructed, but because they seems to about the construction itself and nothing more, they don't move me in any way, but their music is still too busy to form the sort of directionless ambience one can immerse in, so it just feels pointless. Whereas MoM, even though they're always busy too, at least have some kind of a point, some emotional drive to all the vectors in their tunes.

later Autechre is best appreciated on headphones out in the open air i think. the austerity and the abstraction aren't the point, for me, but they help to create this thick textural sound wherein lies the pleasure. i listen to it more like i'd listen to noise stuff or Nurse With Wound or other sound collagists - and great moments emerge from within the initial rush of sound, but i guess it isn't really about the journey from A to B for me

I have always found Mouse on Mars to be really, really boring

God, Music and Romeo and Juliet (DJP), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

it would be like some kind of op-art wallpaper that would fuck with your brain and make it hard to think though, i find it hard to focus on latter-day autechre (post ganz graf) but also impossible to ignore (in a bad way, all that excessive MSP fuckery and grating noises drives me up the wall, it's like an endless feedback squeal)

the late great, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

that's why it reminds me of Merzbow i suppose

(I will say though that I hadn't realized Panacea sampled MoM's "Elli Im Wunderland" on his bad-ass "Untitled B Side"; that is the first thing about them I've found interesting)

^^^ All '90s output, all beautiful without the "abstraction" strawmanning (which is definitely more applicable to their '00s stuff).
