Kinda did an odd arrangement of a dozen groupings of three at least semi-related songs I like.

I forgot last time I posted to mention:

Hatcham Social - About Girls

Which seems very likely to be a top-10 album for the year. Never would have heard of them if not for ilm.

dlp9001, Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:55 (1 year ago) Permalink

yes that is a very good album. i don't think it has some of the highs of their earlier records but it is definitely stronger overall than their previous stuff. if you like it you'll almost certainly like their earlier album

Track of the year for me so far - The Thing And Neneh Cherry 'Dream Baby Dream'

Conan The Asshander (Doran), Monday, 16 April 2012 08:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

seeing that made me do a kind of triple take (THAT The Thing and THAT Neneh Cherry and THAT Dream Baby Dream???), but then it couldn't possibly work any better.

michael nyman cat (Merdeyeux), Monday, 16 April 2012 17:41 (1 year ago) Permalink

Dustin Wong's my album of the year so far.

Blue Collar Retail Assistant (Dwight Yorke), Monday, 16 April 2012 18:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

the thing + neneh is one of those things that seems crazy when you see it but then kinda makes perfect sense given neneh's background

i find it really confusing that this thread is albums & tracks mixed into one, i'm going to start a tracks/singles one soon

Just saw this singer make her debut live performance. Very, very impressed.

2 weeks pass...

This may be premature, but I am liking Elio Villafranca and Arturo Stable's Dos y Mas (jazz, definitely not salsa or trad. Afro-Cuban dance music, though there are certainly connections to the latter).

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 20 May 2012 19:25 (1 year ago) Permalink

Also, Tokyo Jihen's Beaucoup de Bruit pour Rien has grown on me a lot, especially in that live version I just linked to, god willing.

killer mike is so, so good

rev, i was kinda with you when i heard ab-soul on spotify and i was thinking "so why is this guy playing third fiddle in black hippy?"

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:23 (1 year ago) Permalink

I wouldn't even say 3rd-fiddle! Seems like Kendrick (obv), Q, and Jay Rock are all more popular than him. But I think his album is on par (at least) with Section.80. The song where he's talking to his dead girlfriend makes me so ;_;

xp: Madlib-produced and a lot more focused than her usual. Sounds like:

ha i always forget jay rock is in black hippy, i guess because he came out way before

2012 has been a disappointing year for me as far as anything goes, music included, but fuck my hat if I'm not a bit addicted to DJ Rashad's 'Teklife Vol.1: Welcome to the Chi' - simply the best introduction anyone can have to the burgeoning footwork scene.

Plenty of people have been getting excited on the dedicated chicago juke thread, but I think it needs wider attention. Whiney's review here not only nails it but also you can stream the whole thing here: http://www.spin.com/spin.com/reviews/dj-rashad-teklife-vol-1-welcome-chi-lit-city
