p sure we saw it separately. and given your reaction to horror, I suspect that you were also a little freaked out despite how awful the movie is

I don't see why these should be mutually exclusive. just cuz this thread is fairly pointless doesn't require me to change my opinion about the movies referenced.

your chiming in is an example of how these threads are useful, completely undermining your statement about how these threads are pointless

I don't know how me and DJP agreeing about something is really "useful". I assume no one here follows my recommendations about anything.

I found a pretty decent horror movie ranking with some stuff I've never heard of, if anyone's looking for suggestions.

my fave underrated flick there is prolly tsukamoto's gemini, he did the tetsuo films. I was on the fence about nominating another movie by him, a snake of june, not really horror but super creepy in a cronenbergian way. almost anything by tsukamoto is worth watching.

Je Woon Kim's I Saw The Devil (2010)?
I vote for that.

yay horror!!!

I don't have a very deep catalog of knowledge so I'm just enjoying the list of titles that's pouring out of your braaaains like when a skull gets hacked open with an ax :D

I am kind of a fussbudget about thriller v horror so I'm not going to be voting for no Mulholland Falls or Eraserhead

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

Phil, I love you for that cartoon

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

what is it with japanese ppl and throwing family members down the well, is this a thing

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

Is the Antichrist in the list L'Anticristo 1974? If not, I would like to nominate that one.

People aren't for comparing, they are for loving. (Je55e), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

Judging by the extent to which my ballot is compiled thus far, Sam Neill would appear to be my favorite horror movie actor of all time.

I dunno, I found Mulholland Falls pretty terrifying.

It's a thing that THEY STOLE FROM THE CHANGELING.

no, I meant the 2009 Von Trier film.

I thought they drowned him in the bathtub? idk I haven't seen the changeling in forever

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:28 (twelve years ago) link

the other (1972)

plz do not confuse w/ the others

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

I saw the devil more of a thriller than horror imo, but if that's up for consideration I'd throw in memories of murder

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:30 (twelve years ago) link

or maybe I wouldn't I dunno

I'd like to nominate Jurassic Park and The Piano

the horror

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

lol

a lot of seriously talentless bassists out there (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

Added all the ones mentioned since I last checked in, except for these from Edward III:

gargoyles (1972)
don't be afraid of the dark (1973)
bad ronald (1974)
crowhaven farm (1970)
dead of night (1977)
duel (1971)
salem's lot (1979)
trilogy of terror (1975)
dark night of the scarecrow (1981)
the dark secret of harvest home (1978)
devil dog: the hound of hell (1978)
the initiation of sarah (1978)
a cold night's death (1973)
the possessed (1977)
satan's school for girls (1973)

Were those included just as examples of '70s TV horror, or were those meant as nominations?

get me bloodied (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, and I'm not adding The Piano, sorry.

get me bloodied (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

look Lost Highway scared the bejabbers out of me but I'm not nomming it as a horror movie

but as I showed in the comedy thread I turn into a giant spaz about genre shenanigans so I'll try to restrain myself

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

does Picnic at Hanging Rock count?

I think it should. It might not be straight horror, but is creepier and more haunting than most genre-adherent horror films.

picture jean rollin (Pillbox), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

kind of, but that makes me feel like any Canadian art-film is then up for grabs, such as Kissed and The Hanging Gardens

a lot of seriously talentless bassists out there (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

xpost well then nominate the Vanishing too, jeez

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

The Vanishing is nominated, et al

get me bloodied (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

did I watch that movie with you or did we watch that independently of each other? that lawnmower scene is all-time

Yeah lawnmower scene totally unforgettable. Also the opening scene! "Three Satanists walk into a dog shelter..."

That list of TV Movies really brings back some deep memories. I saw Gargoyles at least 3 times on TV...

Anyway, a few more:

Jack Ketchum's The Lost
Pontypool
Exorcist II: The Heretic
Dagon

guitar tuner of Billy Joel (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

actually Kissed probably would count, with the whole necrophily thing so

nominations:

Kissed
May

can I nom the book version of The Ruins instead of the movie?
no?

nevermind

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

I think not voting for stuff because it isn't in the 'horror' section at Blockbuster is really missing a trick. Genre labels are often just a marketing tool, and most movies labeled as 'horror' are cinematic middle fingers created by people who hate horror films.

Which is my way of saying most of Lynch's stuff most definitely qualifies as horror, whether anyone involved in its creation or marketing would have necessarily gravitated towards that particular label.

well you said tv movies were fair game.... I'd consider voting for a few of those and I'm sure others would, up to you tho pollmaster

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

ok let me get my head together and i will be back with lists

ill try to do them in larger chunks but plz dont hate me if i end up with a lot of "oh shit and also" one liners

sfdgafhtehw (jjjusten), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

Imma go out on a limb and guess that you'll double the current number of nominees all on your lonesome.

1 of paper = 4 of coin (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

I'll include them all, Ed.III

get me bloodied (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

I'm the kind of person who doesn't like certain foods comingling on a dinner plate...I don't like getting all loosey goosey with my definitions because then dogs/cats/living together/anarchy and it makes little sparks shoot off in my brain and I run around in a circle waving my arms for a while

It's a sickness, I'm aware of it.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

also do you want stuff in like Signal, The format or just "the signal"?
